Maxwell Football Club Weekly Pro Football Update
Championship Weekend

Highlights of notable NFL performances for the week ending Jan. 17.

This weekend holds the key to the door of Super Bowl LV. The final four teams are set and this Sunday will determine the special two clubs that will head to Tampa Bay.

Championship Sunday begins with the NFC Championship Game, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (13-5) travel to play the Green Bay Packers (14-3) for the George Halas Trophy at Lambeau Field (3:05 PM ET, FOX). The Buccaneers are appearing in their first Championship Game since the 2002 season, when they went on to win Super Bowl XXXVII, while the Packers are making their second consecutive appearance. The game features the quarterback with the most postseason wins in NFL history, Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady (32), against the franchise with the most world championships, Green Bay (13).

In the AFC on Sunday (6:40 PM ET, CBS), the top two seeds in the conference, the Buffalo Bills (15-3) and Kansas City Chiefs (15-2), face off at Arrowhead Stadium for the Lamar Hunt Trophy. Buffalo’s Josh Allen (24 years old) and Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes (25) could become just the second pair of opposing quarterbacks under the age of 26 to start a conference Championship Game, joining Vince Ferragamo (25 years old) of the Los Angeles Rams and Doug Williams (24) of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1979 NFC title game.

The Bills are playing in the AFC Championship for the first time since the 1993 season, when they defeated the Chiefs to advance to Super Bowl XXVIII. Kansas City, meanwhile, is only the second team in NFL history to host three consecutive Championship Games, joining the 2002-04 Philadelphia Eagles, who were also led by head coach Andy Reid.

Maxwell Football Club and The Ertz Foundation Team Up

The Maxwell Football Club Partners with the Ertz Family Foundation and The Athletes’ Corner to Host Free Combine for Philadelphia High School Football Players.

The Philadelphia Public High School Football League won’t be playing football this fall, even though most of the state of Pennsylvania is playing on Friday nights. For many of these high school football players, football is their safe place, their lifeline, it’s their family, and it’s a potential vehicle that could change the trajectory of their lives. For these Seniors, not playing football this year could negatively impact their chances of playing college football, making it that much harder to pursue their dreams. In an effort to provide hope to a community in need, The Maxwell Football Club partnered with The Ertz Family Foundation and The Athletes’ Corner to host The Beyond The Field Senior Showcase, which was a free, state-of-the-art combine for Philadelphia high school football players. The participant fees were completely covered by donations from The Maxwell Football Club, The Ertz Family Foundation and The Athletes’ Corner – so every high school athlete who participated was able to do so without charge.

The combine was held on Saturday, October 17th, and proved to be a huge success. There were approximately 150 high school football players who attended the combine to display their skills in front of scouts and college coaches. There were more than 40 college coaches from 32 different universities who attended the combine. There were also 15 high school coaches working with the players, 7 of which have coached in at least one state championship game. These high school athletes had the opportunity to record times for the 40-yard dash, the pro shuttle, vertical jump and also performed on the field drills. Due to the pandemic, safety was of the utmost importance during the combine. The Maxwell Football Club provided athletic trainers and followed strict COVID-19 precautions – including temperature checks and masks for all combine attendees.

Weekly College Football Update
Week 2
By Rich Cirminiello

Highlights of notable Maxwell Award candidates
for the week ending Sept. 12

Who’s Hot

WR Jonathan Adams, Arkansas State

The abbreviated September slate is providing a bigger spotlight to the Sun Belt Conference… and the league is capitalizing on it. The Red Wolves went into Manhattan and shocked Kansas State, 35-31, for just their second-ever win over a Power 5 opponent. Adams led the way with three TD catches, including a spectacular one-handed grab and the game-winner with 38 seconds left.

QB Micale Cunningham, Louisville

Cunningham has picked up where he left off in 2019. And that’s going to make for some exciting times this fall in Louisville. There are still some kinks and a little rust, but the junior still accounted for 367 total yards and four scores in Saturday’s 35-21 win over a dangerous Western Kentucky squad. Cunningham’s 70-yard scoring strike to Dez Fitzpatrick put the game out of reach in the third quarter.

QB Sam Ehlinger, Texas

UTEP was on the other side of the ball, so no one should get too carried away after one weekend. But the Longhorn passing game was potent in Saturday’s 59-3 rout, despite using a slew of new and young receivers. Chemistry was no problem for Ehlinger, who completed 25-of-33 for 426 yards and five touchdown passes to five different teammates.

Philadelphia Sports: Soul Home Opener

The Philadelphia Soul (2-0) held their home opener this week at the Wells Fargo Center against the Jacksonville Sharks (0-2).   A good crowd came out to cheer the most winning team in Philadelphia Sports on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.  The Soul brought their A game to the arena and made Shark steaks out of Jacksonville defeating them soundly by a score of 63-52.

“The new faces of the roster add a spark this season and lift up the entire team up,” Soul Head Coach Clint Dolezel said. “Ryan McDaniel came ready to play like he has since training camp. He has been our offensive leader all season making big plays and catches. Both teams knew each other well and it was an important win to grab in front of our fans for the first time this season.”

The Soul QB Dan Raudabaugh had a great day, he completed 21 of 30 passes for 261 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception.  He was awarded the Russel Athletic Player of the Game for his efforts.  McDaniel’s didn’t disappoint the crowd either, he made some spectacular plays including a one handed touchdown grab.  McDaniels finished the day with 11 receptions for 133 yards and 5 TD’s.

The Soul had the lead at halftime with a score of 35-21 and continued their dominance throughout the second half.  The final score of 63-52 makes it seem as it was a close game but the Sharks had to make a big comeback in the fourth quarter to get within 11 by game’s end.  The two notable players for the Sharks was Tommy Grady, who completed 26-of-41 passes for 346 yards, eight touchdowns, and zero interceptions.  The other player was former Soul Tiger Jones, who led the Sharks with 13 catches for 239 yards and five touchdowns.
