For the second time in four picks in the draft, the Eagles addressed the offensive line. This time around they selected Halapoulivaati Vaitai, a offensive tackle from TCU. Vaitai, 6’6″, 320 lbs, has experience playing both left and right tackle, however, some scouts believe he is better suited for right tackle or even guard.

Here is NFL.com’s scouting report on Vaitai:

May 1st, 2016 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Eagles draft running back Wendell Smallwood in the 5th round | Filed in Eagles, NFL

The Philadelphia Eagles had a need at running back coming into draft weekend, and they hope that their first of two selections in the fifth round will add some depth.

The Eagles selected Wendell Smallwood out of West Virginia with the 153rd pick in the NFL Draft. Smallwood, 5’10”, 208 lbs, is known as a physical “ground and pound” running back. Last season at West Virgina Smallwood was the leading rusher in the Big 12, as he rushed for 1,519 yards and nine touchdowns in 13 games, while also catching 26 passes out of the backfield for 160 yards.

Here is NFL.com‘s scouting report on Smallwood:

Eagles sign Rodney McLeod, Brandon Brooks, Chase Daniel

March 10th, 2016 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Eagles sign Rodney McLeod, Brandon Brooks, Chase Daniel | Filed in Eagles, NFL

The NFL league year is officially under way, and once again on the first day of free agency the Eagles wasted little time making moves. In addition to the trades and signings from earlier this week, the Eagles made three more signings today.

Safety Rodney McLeod, Guard Brandon Brooks, and Quarterback Chase Daniel are the newest members of the Eagles.

Rodney McLeod, 25, played the last three seasons with the St. Louis Rams. He started all 48 games and totaled 184 tackles, five interceptions, seven forced fumbles and six recovered fumbles.

Last season Pro Football Focus ranked McLeod as the 10th best safety in football. The Eagles will pair him with Pro Bowl safety Malcolm Jenkins, and could form one of the better safety tandems in the NFL, which is something that hasn’t been said for the Eagles in over a decade.

The Eagles pass defense ranked 28th last year, and it has been a unit the team has been looking to upgrade for a long time. As of now, Jenkins, McLeod, and the newly acquired Leodis McKelvin seem to put the Eagles on the right track to solidifying the weak spot of a defense with a above average front seven.

Eagles sign Leodis McKelvin to two-year deal

March 9th, 2016 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Eagles sign Leodis McKelvin to two-year deal | Filed in Eagles, NFL

Cornerback was arguably a position of need coming into the offseason for the Eagles. However, the position became a priority after yesterdays trade that sent Byron Maxwell to the Miami Dolphins.

It didn’t take very long for the Eagles to address the position as they signed former Buffalo Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin to a two-year deal, reportedly worth $6 million.

McKelvin, who will turn 31 years old in September, played under new Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz in Buffalo during the 2014 season. During that season McKelvin appeared in 10 games, starting nine and had a career high four interceptions while also forcing and recovering a fumble.

The 11th overall pick in the 2008 draft has appeared in 98 career games, starting 60, and has recorded 317 tackles, 13 interceptions, and four forced fumbles. He has also played safety, which is another potential area of need for the Eagles.

The trade is a low-risk move by the Eagles due to the reported money that was signed, and McKelvin being very familiar with the scheme that he played very good in just two seasons ago.

Breaking: Eagles trade DeMarco Murray to Titans

March 8th, 2016 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Breaking: Eagles trade DeMarco Murray to Titans | Filed in Eagles, Football, NFL

In what has been a crazy day so far that has already featured Byron Maxwell and Kiko Alonso being sent to Miami, Howie Roseman wasn’t done there.

According to multiple reports, running back DeMarco Murray is being traded to the Tennessee Titans. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Adam Schefter is also reporting that the return for the Eagles will include draft pick compensation, similar to the Maxwell/Alonso trade.

Murray was signed by the Eagles last year to a five-year, $40 million deal, however, the running back was not happy with his role in Chip Kelly’s offense or Philadelphia in general. In 2015 Murray ran for 702 yards on 193 carries, which was a vast drop off from his over 1,800 yard rushing performance in 2014.
