Philadelphia Soul Press Release

PHILADELPHIA (May 29, 2013) – The Philadelphia Soul (5-4) look to win their third in-a-row as they host the Arizona Rattlers (9-1) in a rematch of ArenaBowl XXV.  Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. and will be televised on the Comcast Network.  Following the game, the Soul will host the “RoShon Fegan and Caroline Sunshine Concert Jam,” which will be free to ticketholders and in conjunction with their “Daddy-Daughter Night.”

Last week, Philadelphia defeated the Tampa Bay Storm in dominating fashion last week, 73-55, led by QB Dan Raudabaugh and the Soul defense.  The Rattlers come into this matchup with the league’s best record and are currently riding a six-game win streak after beating up Iowa, 70-26.

“We need to find a way to put pressure on Davila,” explained Soul head coach Clint Dolezel.  “We know they’re a team that likes to throw deep, so we need to make sure our guys play good coverage and we need to put pressure on him.  They have a solid line, so our guys need to come with a strong pass rush.  Arizona scores a lot, so we need to stay hot offensively.  We’ve been scoring a lot these past couple weeks.  There’s a good chance this game could turn out to be a shoot-out.”

Mike Schmidt’s Memorial Day Retirement

May 27th, 2013 by Leo | 1 Comment | Filed in Baseball, General, MLB, Phillies, Sports

On Memorial Day 1989 third baseman Mike Schmidt retired as a lifelong Phillie. He was 39 at the time, and it would be the first time the Phillies would have to play without him since 1972.  It was a very heart-felt moment to watch Schmidt leave behind the game with tears in his eyes. He retired mid-season after he realized it was his time to go. Schmidt had made a costly error in a game on a play he felt he would have made earlier in his career.

Here is a look at one of Schmidt’s most memorable moments, his 500th Home Run.

The Man Behind The Curtain

Why is Ruin Tomorrow Sooner…..I mean Ruben Amaro Junior, the general manager of this team? What did/does he do to make him the most qualified to be in his position? In 2008, it really seemed as if the Phillies were down to two options as Pat Gillick’s successor: Amaro and Mike Arbuckle. While Amaro literally worked his way up from bat boy to player to front office representative, Arbuckle did his fair share of work. Arbuckle had been a scout since before Amaro was shaving. So with literally 30 years of evaluation under his belt, what held back Arbuckle? He obviously had a reputation within the league, as he was hired literally days after resigning from his position with the Phillies.

One has to wonder where this franchise would be if the choice was different. Would there have been another championship? Would the farm be in such a state of disarray? Like the reasoning behind the choice four and a half years ago, the world will never know. Ultimately, I think it’ll be a choice this franchise will regret, and with each season that passes, and each prospect traded away for a band aid, this franchise will fall deeper and deeper into baseball obscurity.

Lee's 12th Career Shutout

Lee’s 12th Career Shutout

Last night against the Marlins, Cliff Lee recorded his 12th career shutout with a 3-0 victory for the Phillies.  The Marlins had only 3 hits and Lee’s record moves to (5-2) on the season.  Lee had 5 strikeouts and walked 2 batters and hit one batter.  This is Lee’s first shutout since September 5, 2011, it is also the Marlins 9th time being shutout this season.

The Phillies scored 1 run in the fourth inning with a D. Young HR and 2 runs in the sixth inning with a D. Brown triple that scored D. Young. Then Freddy Galvis singled to left field that brought in D. Brown for the third and final run.  The Phillies had a total of 12 hits during the game.  It was a combination of great pitching with good hitting that brought home the Phils 23rd win and one game below .500 at (23-24).  The Phillies are currently 5.5 games back from the Braves and 3rd in the NL East.

What’s Wrong With Our Bullpen

¿Por qué sigues aquí, Durbin?

No, I didn’t forget a question mark in the title.  I’m not asking what’s wrong with our bullpen; I’m going to tell you.

This past October, bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer was moved to the position of “Catching Coach,” which is, I’m pretty sure, the most ridiculous job within the Phillies organization.  Rod Nichols, a minor league coach, was promoted to bullpen coach in Philadelphia.  It’s been seven months, and I’d say there’s an outstanding chance that Jonathan Papelbon is going to start demanding a 58% raise every 58 days if he continues to be the only reliever showing up.   If we can’t get rid of Charlie (despite my wishes on pennies in every fountain in the tri-state area), maybe we could at least replace Nichols.

Let’s take a look at our underwhelming bullpen, and I’d like to note that these guys currently look better on paper than they do in actual performance:
