Roy Halladay elected to the Hall of Fame

Here in Philly we are all familiar with the tragic loss of Roy Halladay after a plane crash in 2017.  We were all saddened after a long and fantastic career in the MLB, 12 years with the Toronto Blue Jays and 4 years with the Phillies including a Perfect game in 2010.

The Baseball Writers Association of America officially released its 2019 Hall of Fame voting results. there were four players who will be inducted into Cooperstown this July: pitchers Mariano Rivera, Roy Halladay and Mike Mussina, as well as designated hitter Edgar Martinez.

Of course we here in Philly and Toronto were happy to see Roy made the HOF on the first ballot.   During his 16-year career, he won two Cy Young Awards and played in eight All-Star Games. He also won 203 games and figures to be remembered as one of the old school hard working pitcher thanks in part to his 250-inning season in 2010.

Although it has a bittersweet taste, Roy Halladay’s surviving widow and 2 children released a statement after his induction into the HOF that his son Braden wrote.

You’d never guess it by stepping outside here in Philadelphia, but spring is right around the corner.  Spring Training is officially underway in Clearwater, and manager Ryne Sandberg held his first team workout today.  Pitchers and catchers reported last week, and there’s a familiar guest instructor at training: Roy Halladay.  It seems like a lifetime ago that Philadelphia’s pitching rotation boasted the likes of Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Oswalt, and Blanton, doesn’t it?

We’re still graced stuck with Jonathan Papelbon as closer, and Mike Adams (once he’s fully recovered from shoulder surgery) will be 8th inning setup man.  We’ll also most  likely see lefties Antonio Bastardo and Jake Diekman in the bullpen.  Joe Savery was claimed on waivers by the A’s; Philadelphia needed his spot on the roster for newly-acquired A.J. Burnett.  (If you’re wondering, Burnett signed a one-year, $16 million deal.)

Lefty Cole Hamels, who announced that he has had shoulder “discomfort,” is currently scheduled for his first bullpen session at Carpenter Complex next Tuesday.  Also experiencing shoulder issues is RHP Jonathan Pettibone, who is behind schedule with bullpen sessions (yes, it’s the same shoulder that landed him on the disabled list last season).

On the bright side, non-roster invitee Jesse Biddle has been working out in Clearwater.  You may remember the 22-year-old lefty’s name from the first round of the 2010 draft.  The 6’4″ lefty is a Germantown Friends School alum, and he’ll be pitching in Lehigh Valley this season.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he made an appearance or two in Philadelphia.

Congratulations to Roy Halladay on a stellar career.

 

This week, Roy Halladay announced what we’ve all seen coming: he is retiring from Major League Baseball.

Halladay, at age 36, has had a career most pitchers only see in their dreams.  With 203 wins, eight All-Star Games, two Cy Young awards, a perfect game, and a postseason no hitter, Doc has plenty to celebrate.  The only thing missing from Roy’s trophy case is that coveted World Series ring – the very reason he came to Philadelphia in 2010.

This is such a bittersweet announcement for Phillies fans, because we’ve watched Doc shift from the best in the National League to an aging pitcher struggling to get his fastball over the plate at 88 mph.  His shoulder issues have gotten the final say, and just like that, we’re all robbed of the sendoff that Halladay deserves.  This is the man who left footprints around Citizens Bank Park when a little snow was not going to slow down his disciplined workout regimen.

Although I’ve obviously had this portion of the two-part series done for a while now, I figured I’d better get it out of the way before Amaro makes a significant move of stupidity before Christmas (because we all know Rube likes to get his shopping done early). I think that it is important to note prior to revealing this list, that they are not in order of financial pain, even though the majority of Ruben’s self-inflicted problems are monetary ones. The fall of 2008 was a happy time for Philadelphia Phillies fans. Jimmy Rollins’ prophecy of being the team to beat had finally come true, and Pat Gillick’s genius shined thru and brought the team’s second world title in franchise history. We were on top of the world. As the future Hall of Famer stepped aside from the game, Ruben Amaro seemed primed to be next in line to take over the reigning World Champions. Since then, Amaro returned the Phillies to the World Series, but luck (and health), has not been on the team’s side. In the meantime, let’s look at the top ten moves the current GM has made to keep this team successful. (more…)

Halladay Hiding Injury?

After yet another batting practice session, Roy Halladay is looking less and less like “Doc” and more like a patient. Halladay’s ERA is dangerously close to 7.00, and it’s becoming clear to me what the problem is. Halladay is injured. In fact, it’s my belief that Halladay has a shoulder injury. In my experience watching baseball, pitchers show obvious signs as to how they are feeling. A pitcher whose average velocity is significantly lower than normal is usually hampered by an elbow injury. A pitcher who is having control issues is generally suffering from a shoulder problem. Some skeptics will say that Halladay is striking out six per start and nearly a K/9 of 9, but let’s dig deeper for a second. As recent as 2011, Halladay averaged between 70-80% of his pitches to be strikes in the zone or balls swung at out of the zone. This year that number has dropped significantly as his strike rate is closer to 50-60%.

Hopefully, Halladay can beat this issue and spend as little time on the disabled list as possible. If not, no words will be truer than those of Aaron Eckhart in “The Dark Knight”:

“You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
