The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that they have released Chip Kelly, a shocking move that many did not expect to happen tonight.

Owner Jeffery Lurie released a statement to Eagles season ticket holders explaining the move:

“I have made a decision to release Chip Kelly this evening. I spent the last three seasons evaluating the many factors involved in our performance as a team. As I watched this season unfold, I determined that it was time to make a change.

As we move forward, the search for a new head coach will begin and will be led by myself, Don Smolenski and Howie Roseman. To the extent that we are able, we will try to keep you informed as we go through this process.

Pat Shurmur will be our interim coach for the Giants game Sunday.

It’s been a very bumpy season for the Birds, with it being a story of streaks. They start the season by losing three of their first four. Then, they win back-to-back games…only to drop four of their next five games. But, the important thing with this is that they have a pair of vital wins- Dallas and the New York “Football” Giants. With those two wins, the Eagles now sit at 2-2 in the division, having lost a pair of games to the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys.

With their improbable victory last week, the Eagles climbed the ladder of the NFC East, improving their record to 5-7. The Giants and Redskins both lost heart-breakers last week, bringing the three teams to a tie atop the division. Entering week 14 against the Buffalo Bills, the Philadelphia Eagles had a chance to leave Lincoln Financial Field in sole possession of first place.
