Who’s the Best Phillies Catcher of All Time?

July 13th, 2019 by Philly Pressbox | 1 Comment | Filed in Baseball, General, MLB, Phillies

The boys are gathered at the Philly Pressbox for a few cold beverages and some baseball talk. We recently posted a note that it was Mike Lieberthals birthday and received both positive and negative comments about Lieby and him being honored on the Phillies Wall of Fame. That led us to the conversation of Who’s the Best Phillies Catcher of All Time. We quickly decided on the four finalists, Bob Boone, Darren Daulton, Leiberthal and Carlos Ruiz. This pretty much covers the last 40 years of full time Phillies catchers.

We’re going to provide some statistical information, as Phillies only, on each of the four and allow you, the fans, to vote on your favorite. The players are listed in alphabetical order.

BOB BOONE

Bob BooneBoonie was the Phillies full-time starting catcher from 1973-1981. He caught 1000+ games in 7 seasons.

He ranks 2nd to Lieberthal in games caught in the modern day with 1125. He caught 100+ games 7 times

He is 3rd in Batting Average, .259, behind Lieberthal and Ruiz.

He is 3rd in Home Runs, 65, behind Lieberthal and Daulton.

He ranks 3rd in RBI’s with 456.

The Prodigy Returns

September 23rd, 2018 by Leo | Comments Off on The Prodigy Returns | Filed in Eagles, Football, NFL

Carson Wentz’s return from injury will be one of the greatest moments in Philadelphia sports history.

Make no mistake about it, Carson Wentz turned the Eagles franchise around and brought them their first championship in six decades. Sure, Nick Foles stepped into the role and had a marvelous run, quarterbacking the team through the playoffs and an electrifying Super Bowl win. But Foles and his teammates rode Wentz’s spirit to victory. They followed the path blazed by Wentz, and were infused with the confidence that can only be inspired by a player endowed with divine abilities. Carson Wentz took a team, and a city for that matter, that had been so demoralized from fifty-seven years of losing, and changed their DNA. He changed their destiny.

So, on Sunday, September 23rd, 2018 at 1:00 p.m., savor what you are witnessing. Listen to the crowd at Lincoln Financial Field when Carson Wentz trots out of the tunnel onto the hallowed grass of his home turf. There will be a roar you will not hear again in your lifetime. Because the fans know innately what this wunderkind did. Generations feel it in their marrow. And they will welcome back their young, gridiron general with the enthusiasm and reverence reserved for only the greatest of warriors. It will be, well, let’s call it a religious experience.

That’s what Carson Wentz means to Philadelphia.

To take a peek back, it’s hard to believe what Wentz has accomplished in less than two years as a pro.

Soul Tied For Second In Final Seconds

June 18th, 2018 by Leo | Comments Off on Soul Tied For Second In Final Seconds | Filed in Football, General, Soul, Sports

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Philadelphia Soul (5-4) defeated the Albany Empire (5-4) at the Times Union Center with a score of 75-74 in front of 9,534 fans in the final 0.4 seconds of the game. This nail-biter put the Soul in a tie with the Empire for second place in the Arena Football League.

Soul rookie WR Aaron Wascha totaled seven touchdowns and 208 yards, recording the first 200-yard receiving game since Quentin Sims’ 205 yards against Tampa Bay in April of 2017. Although the Empire maintained a steady lead for most of the game, the Soul fought hard in the fourth quarter to get the win they needed after falling to the Washington Valor at home last week.

The game began in usual Arena Football fashion as the Empire and Soul exchanged touchdowns early in the first quarter, scored by the top two wide receivers in the league: Empire WR Malachi Jones and Soul WR Darius Prince. However, Albany picked up the pace as WR Collin Taylor recovered a Soul onside kick, leading to a five-yard touchdown by WR Joe Hills, giving Albany a 14-7 lead. In the ensuing Soul drive after receptions by WR Aaron Wascha and Prince, the Soul managed to tie up the score at 14 with another touchdown by Prince to conclude the first quarter.

Some Quick facts on the SuperBowl Win : Lutz

February 17th, 2018 by Kyle Lutz | Comments Off on Some Quick facts on the SuperBowl Win : Lutz | Filed in Eagles, Football, General, NFL

All the way to the end, till the very-last snap, it was a nail biter. But somehow the Philadelphia Eagles prevailed, as 4.5 point underdogs, winning the city’s very first Lombardi Trophy.

Journeyman, former Eagles’ player, starting quarterback Nick Foles had another phenomenal 2018 postseason game and came away with Super Bowl MVP honors. Foles was an Eagles’ 3rd-round pick from Arizona in 2012 and made the NFC Pro Bowl the next year. Despite being traded to St. Louis, then going to Los Angeles and Kansas City, the Eagles brought him back to back up 2016 number-two overall pick Carson Wentz.

Wentz, who was on pace this season to be an MVP finalist, tore multiple ligaments in his knee and ended his season because of it. Foles took over like he hadn’t missed a step from 2013 and played with confidence and control.

The majority of football fans know what Patriots’ future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Tom Brady can accomplish against adversity, no matter the roster. Coming into the postseason, he already won five titles, NFL MVP twice and made several AFC Pro Bowl teams. But could Foles also win a title in the face of adversity, put the team on it’s back and outlast Brady?

To critics and analysts, it didn’t seem likely.

Philly Sports News: Temple and PSU Take Another Step

October 20th, 2015 by Robert Waterman | Comments Off on Philly Sports News: Temple and PSU Take Another Step | Filed in College Sports, Football, General, Sports

So I’ve got some good news, and some bad news after another crazy Saturday of College Football.  So I will start with the bad news first, Penn State went into Columbus with visions of winning, however, they were quickly extinguished in a 38-10 loss to the top ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday Night Football.  The Nittany Lions looked lethargic for most of the game as Christian Hackenberg went 7 for 13 throwing for 120 yards and 1 touchdown, but was pressured and hurried as well as sacked all night long.  The lone bright spot for this team was RB Saquon Barkley who ran for 196 yards.  Now keep in mind that he is only a freshman who had a bright future ahead of him.

For Ohio State, it was the J.T Barrett show as he threw for only 30 yards and 2 touchdowns, however, he killed Penn State with his legs as he ran for 102 yards and 2 additional touchdowns, and if that wasn’t enough Ezekiel Elliott ran for 153 yards and 1 touchdown as well.  Next game for Penn State is a road test against Maryland while Ohio State also goes in the road for another Saturday Night game against Rutgers.

Now for the good news….. (more…)
