Forward Ryan White Celebrates the Flyers win with goalie Steve Mason

The Flyers returned home to Philadelphia as they hosted the Montreal Canadians to begin the second half of the season. They went into the all-star break with a win and were five points out of the wildcard and needed another regulation win to inch closer to the final wild card spot and distance themselves from the Canadians. They did just that, thanks to a full sixty minutes of good/disciplined hockey. The special teams played a vital role in last nights victory, as they went 2-4 on the powerplay, goals from Simmonds and Schenn, and killed 3 of 4 Habs penalties, including a 5 minute major given to Radko Gudas for his hit on Lucas Lessio.

The Flyers 2-0 lead would be cut in half thanks to a powerplay goal scored by Habs Andrei Markov, with just 1:42 left in the first. After scoring late in the first, the Canadians would score the tying goal just 2:30 into the 2nd period, courtesy of defensemen Jeff Petry, Halfway into the second, Wayne Simmonds netted his second goal of the night, giving the Flyers a critical 3-2 lead. After killing the five minute major, Matt Read put the dagger in the Habs, as he scored the empty netter to put the Flyers up 4-2 with just 43 seconds left in regulation.

Wayne Simmonds 3rd period go-ahead-goal.

Fryar Gets Five

Fryarfive

Not good news for Fryar…

Former Philadelphia Eagle Irving Fryar and his 74-year-old mother were sentenced Friday for their roles in a $1.2 million mortgage scheme involving a multitude of lending institutions.

Fryar, was sentenced to five years in prison after he was convicted of conspiracy and theft by fryarprofiledeception in connection with false wage information that he and his mother provided on mortgage applications submitted in rapid succession in late 2009 and early 2010.

His mother, Allene McGhee,, formerly of Willingboro, got three years’ probation.

Mark Fury, McGhee’s lawyer, said he was “very grateful for the judge’s careful and well-reasoned analysis” and pleased with the decision to give McGhee probation. He stated it was difficult for McGhee to see her son sentenced to prison.

A hearing will be held next month to determine restitution.  The prosecutors said the scheme had defrauded banks of more than $1 million, and said Fryar had received about $300,000 of that money. Covert urged prosecutors and the defense to come up with a settlement that is “realistic” and considers Fryar’s and McGhee’s “ability to pay.”

Report: Eagles, Bradford discussing contract extension

August 4th, 2015 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Report: Eagles, Bradford discussing contract extension | Filed in Eagles, NFL, Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles and newly acquired quarterback Sam Bradford are having discussions about a contract extension that would lock up the quarterback in Philadelphia beyond the 2015 season.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Ed Werder earlier this morning:

Bradford is scheduled to make just under $13 million this season.

The contract extension is a good move for the Eagles, depending on the terms, but is a very risky move for Bradford. If Bradford gets hurt this season or does not play well at all, the extension guarantees him money and security for at least one more season.

Four Teams Now Interested In Cole Hamels

There is no secret the Phillies are in the midst of a very painful rebuilding process. No one is more aware of this situation than Phils ace, Cole Hamels. Headlining the trade rumor mill since the start of spring training, the Phillies front office now finds themselves scrambling to make a decision on “Kid Cole”, especially one that is in best interest for the future of the organization.

The Phillies inadvertently dug themselves into quite a deep hole, due to the poor decisions made by upper management the past few years. After winning the World Series in 2008, the team was all in on winning again and turned into heavy spenders.

At the time it seemed to make the most sense, however some moves and contract extensions were not in the best interest of the team’s long-term success and are now heavily suffering the ramifications for it. They pretty much have decimated their farm system and have been stuck with Ryan Howard’s abominable $125 million dollar contract since given the extension in 2010. The Phillies still owe him $60 million over the next two years and if they want to try and move him anywhere they would have to eat at least $40 million of it, with no guarantees of anything great in return.

Thanks to this and other moves (Hunter Pence trade comes to mind, amongst others), upper management has pretty much depleted the farm system in its entirety, making it incredibly difficult to turn the corner in the upcoming seasons.

NFL Mock Draft 2.0

April 21st, 2015 by Ryan Waterman | Comments Off on NFL Mock Draft 2.0 | Filed in Eagles, Football, General, NFL

With ten days remaining until all eyes are on Chicago, this will be my second and final NFL Mock Draft. Between the time of my first mock, and the publishing of this one, I have gone over a lot of aspects that go into draft selections.  I have micro-analyzed pretty much every aspect of every team in the draft. There have been some significant changes made to this version.

#1- Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jameis Winston (QB/Florida State)

I still believe that Winston is the best option for the Bucs here. His athleticism is extraordinary, and if he can overcome his off-field immaturity, Winston will be a force in the NFL.

#2- Tennessee Titans: Leonard Williams (DT/USC)

Kevin Love traded to Cleveland, but Sixers not involved according to report

August 7th, 2014 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Kevin Love traded to Cleveland, but Sixers not involved according to report | Filed in Basketball, General, Sixers
Kevin Love has been traded, but Thaddeus Young is still a Sixer

Kevin Love has been traded, but Thaddeus Young is still a Sixer

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves have an agreement in principle on a trade that would send Kevin Love to the Cavaliers, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports. In return, Minnesota would receive the last two first overall picks in the NBA, Anthony Bennett (2013) and Andrew Wiggins (2014), along with a protected 2015 first round pick. The most interesting part for Sixers fans is they are not involved in this initial trade, as they were rumored to be for the last couple weeks.

The key phrase there is “initial trade”.

While the reported trade above is all but completed, the Sixers can still make a separate trade with Minnesota after the Love trade is official. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has reported that the Sixers are the team who will be taking on Anthony Bennett in a trade. Windhorst reported that a three-team trade was likely, but the Sixers could still strike a separate deal for Bennett if a three-team trade doesn’t happen. As a guest on 97.5 the Fanatic this week, Windhorst gave more clarification:

“For several weeks, it has been understood that the Timberwolves want (power forward) Thaddeus Young to be their new power forward when they trade Kevin Love to Cleveland. If there is no speed bumps between now and August 23rd, that is going to happen. Philadelphia is probably going to end up sending Young to Minnesota. Exactly who the Sixers get back is unclear. I have speculated it could be Anthony Bennett.”
