The Flyers, after a four game break after Friday night’s shootout loss to Winnipeg, come back tonight to begin the first game of a three game home stand vs. Ottawa. They defeated them on the road last week 5-0 at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ontario, a game in which Jake Voracek compiled two goals, and goalie Steve Mason (who gets the start tonight) stopped all 24 shots by the Sens for his first shutout of the season (and as a Flyer).

Speaking of Mason, he hasn’t allowed any more than three goals in a game this season. He moves up with the puck when need be, he moves the puck well, he moves great laterally side to side. And it isn’t as if he’s on an extreme hot streak, I just believe he’s playing overall solid hockey, after a period with Columbus a few years ago where the same couldn’t be said.

Last week on the road trip, Philadelphia went undefeated, with a 2-0-1 record at Ottawa, rival Pittsburgh and Winnipeg. They could have earned all 6 possible points on that road trip, but they squandered a late 2-1 lead vs. Winnipeg, when Dustin Byfuglien scored on a late power play for Winnipeg, and Winnipeg won it on extra shots in the shootout. Regardless of the squandered point, Philadelphia has to look at the positives: they still gained a point, they still went undefeated on the road trip, which was essential if this turn around is going to occur, and they competed at a high level.

Flyers win; defeat Ottawa 5-0

The Flyers put together a solid, 60-minute effort vs. Ottawa tonight, in a 5-0 blowout victory. Steve Mason earned his first shutout, on 24 shots, as a member of the Flyers, even though he’s been solid all year long now. Jake Voracek had a pair of goals, Claude Giroux had a pair of assists, and Vinny Lecavalier and Brayden Schenn also had multiple point games as well. They out-shot the Senators by 7, 31-24, and 21-to 14 from the second period onward.

Philadelphia not only scored in general, but especially on the man advantage. They converted twice on three opportunities, while the opposition failed to score at all on their lone man advantage. Plain and simple, the Flyers dominated tonight, and from early on- not only offensively but defensively and goaltending as well. The team tomorrow continues their 3-game road trip, the 2nd game of the trip, at Pittsburgh vs. the rival Penguins. You can make a case for both starting or sitting goalie Steve Mason tomorrow.

01. If he starts, it would be the first time this season that he’s started in back to back games, thus he hasn’t really been taxed thus far this year physically from that standpoint. Also, supporting this point would be the fact that he shut out a strong Ottawa team and offense tonight, so playing the hot hand makes total sense. As they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I would ride Steve Mason and his hot hand tomorrow night vs. Pittsburgh, but that’s just me.

02. Another point would be to give Mason a rest, but this point is moot, in my opinion, compared to the former. Some would argue that, after tonight, on a back-to-back night, the latter game should be played by the backup/remaining goalie, in order to give the previous night’s goalie (in this case, that would be Mason) a rest for future advantages. I think, as an aforementioned point, that Mason and his body would be able to handle a back-to-back game, especially after a shutout.
