Remember when the Phillies signed Jonathan Papelbon for 2012 and I said, “Thanks, but no thanks, Boston?” I stand by that.
We’ve had our share of unpredictable closing pitchers here in Philadelphia. These past two years, I’ve actually been looking a little like Curt Schilling circa 1993. The ninth inning is a little easier to watch if you have a towel over your face. I don’t think it’s a very good sign that I’m going to bed angry and it’s only the first week of April. After last night’s loss in Texas, I was ready to punch Papelbon in the throat 58 times.
The Phils entered the bottom of last night’s ninth inning with a two run lead. With a save opportunity, Jonathan Papelbon came in to close the game. Instead of shutting things down, which I needn’t remind anyone is his job for which he is grossly overpaid, Papelbon gave up three runs. Rangers won the game (and series) in walkoff fashion. When asked about it later, he said, “It’s just one of those weird innings, man.” Really, man? Tell that to Kyle Kendrick, who pitched solidly through seven innings.
