As we exit past the NHL Trade Deadline (which concluded today at 3 PM) and into the final 20 or so games of the NHL season, the Flyers made a couple moves regarding defense. Yesterday, they acquired 27-year old Islanders’ defenseman Andrew MacDonald for two draft picks and prospect Matt Mangene. The Islanders received Philadelphia’s 2014 third-round draft pick and their second-round pick in 2015 as well.
The 24-year old Mangene has played 51 games this season with Philadelphia’s AHL affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms, in which he’s totaled three goals, six points and a -1 rating. Before being assigned to New York’s AHL representative, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, he previously played the last two seasons in Adirondack. Mangene is originally from New York, as he grew up in Manorville, roughly 25 minutes from Long Island, before he went on to play for the University of Maine for three years.

More importantly out of the trade comes Isles’ blueliner Andrew MacDonald, who, albeit slightly, gives the Flyers an upgrade at the back end over who they currently have. After the acquisition of MacDonald on Tuesday, the Flyers were left with nine defenseman, with Andrej Meszaros being the man out of the equation. The MacDonald acquisition mixed with Meszaros’ status this off-season as an UFA (unrestricted free-agent) led to the latter’s departure to Boston.
