On Memorial Day 1989 third baseman Mike Schmidt retired as a lifelong Phillie. He was 39 at the time, and it would be the first time the Phillies would have to play without him since 1972. It was a very heart-felt moment to watch Schmidt leave behind the game with tears in his eyes. He retired mid-season after he realized it was his time to go. Schmidt had made a costly error in a game on a play he felt he would have made earlier in his career.
