What A Difference A Year Makes

The Cowardly Lion Is Gone

Last year, the Eagles played their last regular season game and a first round playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys.

The scores of those games?

Final Regular Season Game: Dallas 24 – Eagles 0
Playoff Game: Dallas 34 – Eagles 14 (It was 34-7 at the half!)

After those two games there was much talk of another imminent Cowboys Super Bowl.  They were the favorites, loaded with talent and the pedigree of ‘America’s Team.’  I watched an ESPN special with Cowboys greats from years past, like Roger Staubach, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin and I can’t remember who the fourth Cowboy was.  Who cares?  They were actually talking about a new Cowboys… dynasty!  Before they even won anything!!  Hahahaha!  The following week they got blown off the field and thoroughly humiliated by the Vikings, 34-3.  Dynasty over before it began.  Thank you Minnesota.

But Can You Root For These Guys?!

The Eagles appeared to be headed on a downward trend.  But, now, miraculously, they are the favorite to win the NFC East, and are being picked by many to go to the Super Bowl.

How could that be?  What changed you ask?

Except for one main element, they have basically the same team.  What is SO different this year?  You guessed it.  They finally replaced their quarterback.  They traded Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins, and voila!, abracadabra!, the Eagles are a team that is actually feared now.  Which other NFC contender do you think wants to face them in the playoffs?  Nobody.

But for years, Eagles brass defended McNabb.  Reid had to put him in a “better position to succeed.”  He was hurt, fatigued, confused, or whatever other excuse they all could come up with.  In the media, Eagles prostitute Howard Eskin actually used to say – on a regular basis – that McNabb was “better than Peyton Manning.”  Hey, “Happy Feet” Manning is no Joe Montana in big games, but he’s light years ahead of the Cowardly Lion.

Anyway, Eskin is such a lick lick that he simply parrots whatever Joe Banner orders, and his lips are planted firmly on Andy Reid’s ass, so of course he backed McNabb UNTIL the Eagles decided to can him.  Then, suddenly Howie found ‘flaws’ in McNabb’s game.  And now, when Eskin’s on Andy Reid’s show it’s embarrassing enough to make you want to vomit (pardon the pun).  Eskin is so giddy that Andy could say, “Howard, you’re a turd.  A human pile of crap.”  And Howard would just laugh.  He’s just happy to be allowed to sit next to Andy.  I am convinced he’s on the Eagles payroll.

So, McNabb is gone, replaced by Michael Vick (another whole drama entirely), and the Eagles are good again.  Very good.  And Dallas now stinks.  Who doesn’t loved that?

BUT, are you rooting for the Eagles now?  Rooting for Vick, Eskin, Reid, and Banner?  Wow!  That’s a tough thing for me to do.

The pass to Kevin Curtis was EASY? McNabb is so afraid to throw an interception that he puts the ball where even his own receiver can’t catch it. Curtis toes were on the sideline and he was stretched as far as he could. IF he caught it, it would have been a GREAT catch. Easy by no means. But what about Westbrook in the flat? The receiver over the middle for a TD?

Manning did not have Harrison last year and went to the Super Bowl with Pierre Garcon and ??? Gonzales. Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne are products of Manning’s greatness. If Todd Pinkston and James Thrash played with Brady, Manning, Montana, Roethlisberger, et al, they would be way better because the passes thrown to them would be ACCURATE. They would not be hung out to be paralyzed by a quarterback who has no control over where the ball goes when it leaves his hand. Would you want to catch a McNabb throw over the middle? Or a Brady throw?

I’m singling him out because of these facts:

    He’s 1-4 in championship games.
He thew an INT that cost them the Championship Game against the Rams.
He threw and INT to cost them the game against the Bucs.
He threw 3 INTs in a row against the Pats in the Super Bowl (one called back on a penalty, one the defender dropped, and one which was an INT) after he had only thrown 9 INTs all season! Think he was nervous?
Well, name one other athlete, let alone QB, that you know who is known for vomitting in the biggest moment of his career. Name one.

That’s why he is a CHOKE. Talk to fans from other cities and see what they think of McNabb. It’s laughable. The guy is a joke league wide.

eric i am sorry and unprofessional if i offended you personally. we all have our crazy opinions.
my spin on mcnabb was yes he was a very good quarteback for years, not a great one. but my problem is he usually came up way short in fourth quarters and disappeared altogether in huge playoff game.
as for the eagles getting screwed by refs i should restate the cowboys seem to get more of their share of calls due to jerry jones powerful influence. i had 2 jet fans and one giant fan god forbid call me last night stating they even thought the eagles got fucked multiple times and they hate the eagles!
as for the steelers, tough hard hitting team who has gotten some luck (bills dropped td), but point being you have one insanely great clean player in troy and the DIRTIEST player in the league in harrisson hands down. the refs should have suspended him 4 games already and he half the time gets a measle fine.

I find it humorous how McNabb, the greatest QB in Eagles franchise history, is continually bashed on here.

    • schmitty says:

CAUSE HE CHOKED IN THE BIG ONES……SERIOUSLY ARE YOU AN EAGLES FAN OR EVEN PLAY A SPORT?

    • Christian says:

Was he better than Hall of Famer Norm Van Brocklin, who led them to the 1960 NFL Championship over Vince Lombardi’s Packers? The only playoff game Lombardi ever lost… Don’t think so.

The McNabb defenders will never stop backing their position. Bottom Line: McNabb was a very good quarterback in quarters 1 through 3. In the fourth quarter he sunk to a below average quarterback. FYI – the fourth quarter is the most important one.

      • Eric says:

Schmitty, I’m not even going to bother with you because your lack of knowledge of anything sports-related is astounding. Christian, yes, he was better than Van Brocklin. Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, and Frank Reich all won Superbowls yet they’re not better than McNabb. How come Allen Iverson isn’t criticized for not winning Philly a championship? McNabb was throwing to the likes of Todd Pinkston, James Thrash, and Freddie Mitchell in half of those losses. In the first NFC Championship loss they were double digit underdogs on the road vs the Rams who had one of the greatest offenses of all-time. Nobody expected them to win yet they almost came back and did and it was solely because of McNabb who put the team on his shoulders and carried them back. Vs the Bucs the Eagles ran into one of the greatest defenses of all-time, who after the Eagles win went on to absolutely embarrass the Raiders in the Superbowl. The Bucs were just better than everyone else. The next year vs the Panthers his receivers had SEVEN, let me say that again, SEVEN drops. The Superbowl year he made it there without Owens in the playoffs and then during that game Todd Pinkston conveniently had “leg cramps” and had to miss the rest of the game so his 2nd option after Owens was Freddie Mitchell…..yeah….Vs the Cardinals he also brought them back from a three TD deficit. Sorry that McNabb cannot also play defense. Too bad he couldn’t make that tackle that Jeremiah Trotter absolutely whiffed on attempting to bring down Hightower that pretty much sealed the game. Seriously, it’s almost as if you want McNabb to catch his own passes, also play defense, and coach on the sidelines as well.

        • Christian says:

Eric– what on earth does Iverson have to do with anything? Regarding McNabb, in the Cardinals game, he got the ball back with 2 and a half minutes to play and choked. He threw the ball ten feet over a wide open Westbrook’s head in the flat and missed another receiver wide open over the middle for a TD that would have won the game for the Eagles. And the Eagles were FAVORED against Tampa. FAVORED against Carolina. FAVORED against the Cardinals. Guess what? When you are the QB of the team that is favored and you lose, you don’t get the glory, you get ripped. Who does Tom Brady have? Danny Woodhead? Wes Welker? Deion Branch? How about Manning? He went to the Super Bowl with nobody. McNabb is the biggest CHOKE in NFL history. At Least Jim Kelly and Fran Tarkenton lost to better teams. Matter of fact, I think that’ll be my next article. There’s certainly enough data to support me.

          • Eric says:

Manning didn’t have anyone? He had Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison. Unless you’re talking about Eli who had Plaxico Burress. I’m laughing that you’re comparing even guys like Deion Branch and Danny Woodhead to Todd Pinkston, who again left at halftime and didn’t return due to “leg cramps, James Thrash who would celebrate a 2 yard catch by pointing to the sky, and Freddie Mitchell who clung to his 4th and 26 play for years yet somehow had less catches than Rodney Harrison in the Superbowl. In that Arizona game Kevin Curtis on 4th down let an easy pass slip right through his fingers that wouldve continued the drive.

Again, I’m not saying McNabb deserves no blame, he certainly does. But Christian, you are definitely singling him out. You can’t blame everything on him. He can’t make his WRs catch balls that hit them in the numbers. He can’t make his offensive line block for him. He can’t make his defense tackle DeShaun Foster.

          • Christian says:

            SEE ABOVE ERIC.

        • Schmitty says:

eric it obvious McNabb has naked pics of your lil pee pee. You absolute continuel support for Donnie is downright a disgrace to sports fans.
smart guy the eagles beat the bucs 5 times in a row headed into the 2002 nfc title game.
did you know YOUR BOY donnie put up a whopping 10 points at home against the bucs (7 were set up by a 70 yard mitchell kickoff return). add in ronde barber’s 7 point td return and Mcnoodle scored exactly a minus 4 you idiot! then he followed that at home the next year mustering up 3 points at home again in the nfc title game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
how the fuck in your right mind can you defend a GREAT QB that put up a minus 1 point in BACK TO BACK NFC TITLE GAMES AT HOME?
while i am at it you tart how does brady or mannings make avrage receivers look great? answer you fucking moron……..ACCURACY!
McNabb had great legs, but his “black ego thing about wanting to be a pocket passer cost him huge games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EAT THAT ERIC YOU 5TH GRADE FOOTBALL IQ McNabb KISS ASS!!!!!!!!!!

        • Schmitty says:

the bucs were not better than everyone else, not the eagles dope! philly just beat them 3 times in the regular season games and 2 playoff games! if you knew football our offensive line DOMINATED their very good but very SMALL defense! so please for the love of god shut the fuck up till you know your sports facts! And if you really knew football you’d be mad at Reid for not running the ball down the bucs and panthers throats as they were doing early in both games!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Schmitty says:

yeah and those so amazing great rams lost to the patriots!!!!!!! and if memory serves me right when philly had a minute and a half to go 52 yards your pal McNabb ended the dream again with a horrific pic intended for freddie mitchell.
while i am at it i guess mcnabbs 3 pics (nightmares) had NOTHING to do with losing to the pats???????????? DUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Schmitty says:

God forbid the Eagles lose the division this year to a solid Giant team. You can look at ONE game and blame it on that one!

Redskins at home baby! And no I REFUSE to make the excuse of Vick getting crunched early in the game. This team has 2 very good Quarterbacks. If anyone noticed RETARD Andy changed his game plan with Kolb and went to the fucking dink and dunk bullshit!

He never called any passes down the field and the last time I checked Kolb scorched a WAY BETTER football team in the Atlanta Falcons at home this year. Hell he still playeed good enough to win in Titan town, minus a 4’th quarter meltdown with turnovers!

Bottom line is Andy one COWARDLY LION IS GONE IN DC and you have worn out your welcome too! 12 years no titles! 5 NFC Title games favored in 4 and you are a lousy 1-4? Please…….then when you got to the BIG DANCE, you got beat by a good team, BUT more importantly OUTCOACHED! The Eagles and Steelers were hands down the best 2 teams in 2004. If you did not rest all the starters the last 2 games we would have been 15-1! Look it up I know my shit!

  5. Schmitty says:

were the eagles that bad last year, the cowboys that good or just 2 heartless efforts by Donnie and the depleted defense?

Question, with no Donnie to blame anymore with 2 good QB’s if the Eagles stumble again, how many more years of free buffet does Reid get?

I would go after Cowar or Johnson yes, Steelers and Cowboys with RINGS! Not the kind around fatso Andy’s belly!

  6. Schmitty says:

While there are no absolutes about beating the cowboys and they are playing great of late under garrett (minus that Bum Wade Phillips – get it?!) I PROMISE you the EAGLES will not laydown with that “PUNK ASS” McNabb the have the BALLS to blame his young receivers after that loss! UNBELIEVABLE!

  7. Schmitty says:

Great article! Eskin is a pile of poop, no doubt! I have noticed several announcers in the past critique McNabb, but always did it very gingerly to keep their jobs. I forget who exactly, I believe it was Collingsworth, Baldinger, etc. Anyhow…WOW they are all coming out now saying terrible reads, dogshit throws etc. LOVE IT!
