Run Mike Run!

In the original Star Wars movie, young Luke Skywalker hears the voice of the wise old Jedi master, Obi Wan Kenobi whisper in his ear, “Run Luke, run!”  Skywalker heeds the old man’s advice and takes off running.  He eludes the evil Storm Troopers, and makes his getaway in the Millennium Falcon.  The rest, as they say, is movie history.

On Sunday, about midway through the fourth quarter, it seemed like Obi Wan whispered the same advice in Michael Vick’s ear.  And the rest, is Eagles history.

But in the delirium following the Eagles’ amazing come-from-behind win, it could be easy to forget that the Giants dominated for three and a half quarters.  The Big Blue defense paralyzed Vick and the offense with an effective cover-two zone, and zero blitz package.  They kept two safeties back to avoid the big play, blitzed their linebackers to get pressure on the QB and left their corners on man-to-man coverage on the Eagles wide receivers.  The blitzes brought intense pressure up the middle and on the ends, forcing Vick into quick decisions, sacks and hurried throws.  The Giants’ athletic defensive line battered Vick, knocked down balls and disrupted the offense for most of the game.  Make no mistake – a thorough beating was being administered.  Heck, the Giants were winning 31-10 with eight minutes left in the game.
