Although I’ve obviously had this portion of the two-part series done for a while now, I figured I’d better get it out of the way before Amaro makes a significant move of stupidity before Christmas (because we all know Rube likes to get his shopping done early). I think that it is important to note prior to revealing this list, that they are not in order of financial pain, even though the majority of Ruben’s self-inflicted problems are monetary ones. Mike H. and I will be combining to bring you a top 10 positional ranking for each position in baseball. We thought it would be fun to put the rankings together but also to mix up the criteria that the players are judged on. The criteria for each writer will be listed below and then we will reveal our picks. Keep in mind, these lists are based off of not only who is the best player right now, but who provides the most value for now and the future.

Tigers Sign Prince Fielder

January 24th, 2012 by Johnny G | Comments Off on Tigers Sign Prince Fielder | Filed in General

Prince Fielder has agreed in principal to a nine year, $214MM contract with the Detroit Tigers. Fielder will play first base and Miguel Cabrera will be moving. Whether that is to third base or DH remains to be seen. The average annual value of the deal is $23.78MM and will keep Fielder in Detroit through his age 36 season.

It seems like the season ending injury to Victor Martinez prompted the Tigers and Dave Dombrowski to quickly pursue and close in on Fielder. This is a welcome sign for Phillies fans, as many reports had Fielder closing in on a deal with the Washington Nationals.

MLBtraderumors.com broke the story.

Digging Deep: Ryan Howard

January 8th, 2012 by Mike H. | 22 Comments | Filed in Baseball, Phillies

On April 26, 2010, the Philadelphia Phillies and Ryan Howard agreed to a contract extension worth a minimum of five years and one hundred twenty five million dollars. 2012 will be the first year of that extension and it is very possible that Howard starts the season on the 15-day disabled list. On the day the extension was signed it took only a couple of hours before MLBTR reported that not-so pleasant reactions to the signing.

  • Rob Neyer of ESPN: “[This contract] is a testament to old-school ignorance.” He also went on to refer to this contract as “a big bowl of wrong.”
  • Keith Law of ESPN: “[This deal] is an overpayment in both years and dollars.”
  • Matthew Carruth of Fangraphs.com: “Say hello to baseball’s newest worst contract.”
  • Keith Kaduk of Yahoo.com and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports both expressed the idea that the Phillies were better off waiting, but Rosenthal understood the Phillies thought process.

So needless to say, most reports went on to say that this was not the best move for the Phillies. Amazingly, Jon Heyman did say that the contract was just about right for Howard, so take that for what it is worth. This was the offseason that potentially could have been even deeper at first base as Ryan Howard, Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, and Adrian Gonzalez all would have been coming into free agency.

Since then Gonzalez was traded to, and extended by, the Boston Red Sox. Pujols signed a ridiculously rich contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and, as of the time of this post, Prince Fielder has remained a free agent. We all think we know how much worse Howard is offensively than the rest of the first baseman in the league, but let’s take a look into some next level stats. Be prepared, this is a very in depth piece. (more…)

Pujols Unanimous NL MVP

November 25th, 2009 by Christian | 5 Comments | Filed in Baseball, General

A League of His Own

It’s unanimous – Albert Pujols received all 32 first-place votes in balloting announced by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America on Tuesday, taking the NL prize for the second straight year and third overall.

Pujols hit .327, with 47 HRs and 135 RBIs. He had the best slugging percentage in baseball at .658 and was second in on-base percentage with .443, one point behind AL MVP Joe Mauer.

Florida’s Hanley Ramirez, the NL batting champion, finished second with 233 points, followed by Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard (217) and Milwaukee’s Prince Fielder (203).

Pujols, who also won the award in 2005, became the first player to repeat since Barry Bonds won four in a row from 2001-04. He is the first unanimous MVP since Bonds in 2002.

Pujols is the only player to hit 30 homers in his first nine seasons and has never hit below .314.
