The Venezuelan Power Ranger

For the people who are really committed to the minor leagues, here’s a name to keep an eye on (if you aren’t already): Ranger Suarez. Suarez is an 18-year-old left hander who has pitched for the Phillies in the Venezuelan Summer League the last three seasons. In his first two seasons, Suarez was relegated to a relief role, but he made the best of it.

  • 2012 (16): 5.0 IP (3 games), 1.00 WHIP, and 4:3 K:BB ratio
  • 2013 (17): 17.0 IP (8 games), 1.06 WHIP, and 13:0 K:BB ratio

2014 has clearly been a breakout season for Suarez. He’s been moved from the bullpen to a full-time starter in the rotation. While his record of 5-4 on the season isn’t Clayton Kershaw-esque, the rest of his stat line is.

  • 2014 (18): 80.2 IP (14 games), 0.84 WHIP, and 78:1 K:BB ratio
