Philadelphia Sports: Soul Home Opener

The Philadelphia Soul (2-0) held their home opener this week at the Wells Fargo Center against the Jacksonville Sharks (0-2).   A good crowd came out to cheer the most winning team in Philadelphia Sports on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.  The Soul brought their A game to the arena and made Shark steaks out of Jacksonville defeating them soundly by a score of 63-52.

“The new faces of the roster add a spark this season and lift up the entire team up,” Soul Head Coach Clint Dolezel said. “Ryan McDaniel came ready to play like he has since training camp. He has been our offensive leader all season making big plays and catches. Both teams knew each other well and it was an important win to grab in front of our fans for the first time this season.”

The Soul QB Dan Raudabaugh had a great day, he completed 21 of 30 passes for 261 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception.  He was awarded the Russel Athletic Player of the Game for his efforts.  McDaniel’s didn’t disappoint the crowd either, he made some spectacular plays including a one handed touchdown grab.  McDaniels finished the day with 11 receptions for 133 yards and 5 TD’s.

The Soul had the lead at halftime with a score of 35-21 and continued their dominance throughout the second half.  The final score of 63-52 makes it seem as it was a close game but the Sharks had to make a big comeback in the fourth quarter to get within 11 by game’s end.  The two notable players for the Sharks was Tommy Grady, who completed 26-of-41 passes for 346 yards, eight touchdowns, and zero interceptions.  The other player was former Soul Tiger Jones, who led the Sharks with 13 catches for 239 yards and five touchdowns.

PHILADELPHIA (June 2014) – The Back-to-Back American Conference Champion Philadelphia Soul will hold an open player tryout on Sunday, July 6 at the Wells Fargo Center.   Soul head coach Clint Dolezel, assistant head coach Phil Bogle and general manager Tom Goodhines will be evaluating all players in attendance.  Kickers will be evaluated at this tryout.

“With a high level of injuries this season, and the success we have had getting talented players at our open tryouts, we want to make sure we have talented guys ready to go if we need to call upon them for our championship run,” said Soul coach Clint Dolezel.  “If we can find another Ryan McDaniel out there, it will only increase our chances to bring home a World Championship.”

Philadelphia Soul Team History

May 29th, 2014 by Adam Harman | 1 Comment | Filed in Football, General, Soul, Sports, TSP Radio

On Sunday, April 13, 2003, the face of Philadelphia sports changed by an event taking place across the country – Jon Bon Jovi and Craig A. Spencer’s first taste of Arena Football. Bon Jovi and Spencer attended a Los Angeles Avengers game at the Staples Center, taking their first steps on a path that would bring another professional football franchise to the City of Brotherly Love.

By July 10, 2003, the Arena Football League’s Board of Directors had approved Bon Jovi and Spencer’s application to place a team in Philadelphia. Just over two months later the Soul roster began to take shape with the acquisition of the team’s first player – OL/DL Dwayne Missouri. A week later the tandem of Bon Jovi and Spencer – along with minority owner, Richie Sambora, and Team President, Ron Jaworski – stood under the shadow of the Rocky statue at the Wachovia Spectrum and officially introduced the Soul to the city.

It didn’t take long for Philadelphia to take notice. While the front office made key free agent acquisitions to further build the team, Philadelphia football fanatics feverishly jumped on board, leading to AFL-leading attendance, merchandise sales, and sponsorship numbers.

Meanwhile, the Soul organization also began to build a significant presence within the Philadelphia community, focusing greatly on charitable efforts. Whether it was organizing drives for books and canned food items, making hospital and school visits, or building a playground with the cast if MTV’s The Real World, the players, Soulmates, and front office staff were committed to doing good both on and off the field.
