GAME PREVIEW: ARENABOWL 32

After defeating the defending-champion Washington Valor in both games of the first-round home-and-home series, the Philadelphia Soul will travel to Albany to take on the top-seeded Empire in ArenaBowl 32. This marks the Soul’s sixth title game appearance and third in the last four years. Fans can watch this weekend’s matchup live on ESPN2 or listen to the action on 97.5 The Fanatic.

The Philadelphia defense contained Washington’s dual-threat quarterback Arvell Nelson, the league leader in total offense this season. Over the two-game series, the Second Team All-Arena selection threw five interceptions and was sacked seven times. Leading the way was recent pickup Malik Forrester. The defensive lineman has a league-leading 4.5 sacks this postseason, including three on Sunday. He and the defensive line will look to get pressure on Albany quarterback Tommy Grady, who has been taken to the turf just one time this season.

That sack came at the hands of Soul lineman Sean Daniels during the team’s Week 10 win over the Empire. Philadelphia’s pass rush appeared to rattle Grady, who completed just eight of 18 passes in the second half while throwing two picks. This week, the Soul will attempt to get pressure on Grady while limiting the impact of his favorite target, 2019 Wide Receiver of the Year Malachi Jones.

Having dismantled the Washington defense, the Soul’s high-powered offense will face an Albany team that allowed just 47 points in its two playoff games against the Baltimore Brigade. Philadelphia quarterback Dan Raudabaugh is no stranger to the ArenaBowl, having led the team to four previous appearances and two titles. The nine-year veteran ranks second in passing yards and touchdowns in ArenaBowl history behind only Nick Davila.

GAME PREVIEW: WEEK 1

The Philadelphia Soul will kick off the 2019 season on Saturday, April 27 at 3:30 pm against the Atlantic City Blackjacks. The three-time ArenaBowl champions will play host to the new expansion franchise at the Wells Fargo Center. Fans can watch live on NBC Sports Philadelphia+ or listen to the action on 97.5 The Fanatic.

After winning titles in 2016 and 2017, the Soul had a disappointing 2018 season that saw the team finish 7-5 and exit in the first round of the playoffs. However, this year’s squad is looking to return to championship form.

“One thing that hasn’t changed for the Philadelphia Soul: Our goal is to be the world champions,” said Soul owner Ron Jaworski. “We were not last year. Our goal is to be the world champions this year.”

Among those returning for the Soul are quarterback and former league MVP Dan Raudabaugh, 2018 Defensive Back of the Year James Romain, and 2018 First Team All-Arena wideout Darius Prince. Joining the experienced core are a number of promising new faces, including six AFL rookies.

Soul Tied For Second In Final Seconds

June 18th, 2018 by Leo | Comments Off on Soul Tied For Second In Final Seconds | Filed in Football, General, Soul, Sports

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Philadelphia Soul (5-4) defeated the Albany Empire (5-4) at the Times Union Center with a score of 75-74 in front of 9,534 fans in the final 0.4 seconds of the game. This nail-biter put the Soul in a tie with the Empire for second place in the Arena Football League.

Soul rookie WR Aaron Wascha totaled seven touchdowns and 208 yards, recording the first 200-yard receiving game since Quentin Sims’ 205 yards against Tampa Bay in April of 2017. Although the Empire maintained a steady lead for most of the game, the Soul fought hard in the fourth quarter to get the win they needed after falling to the Washington Valor at home last week.

The game began in usual Arena Football fashion as the Empire and Soul exchanged touchdowns early in the first quarter, scored by the top two wide receivers in the league: Empire WR Malachi Jones and Soul WR Darius Prince. However, Albany picked up the pace as WR Collin Taylor recovered a Soul onside kick, leading to a five-yard touchdown by WR Joe Hills, giving Albany a 14-7 lead. In the ensuing Soul drive after receptions by WR Aaron Wascha and Prince, the Soul managed to tie up the score at 14 with another touchdown by Prince to conclude the first quarter.
