Welcome to part two of my Philadelphia Flyers offseason preview. Over these four parts, I will take a look at trades that should be made, free agent signings that need to happen, prospects that could interest the Flyers, and I’ll also project their offensive and defensive lines come opening night. Without further ado, let’s get right to the free agency preview!

By now, I’m sure you’re all very aware of the Flyers’ storied season this year. They entered the season with a new GM, new coach, and were considered a long-shot for a playoff berth. Yet, they proved everyone wrong by fighting their way into the playoffs. To make matters even more amazing, they took the league-best Washington Capitals to their limit, falling just short of a game 7. Over the course of the season, the Flyers had their highs, and their lows. The team had moments of brilliance, and there were also times of pure stupidity. Above all, they found a way to play like a team.

Despite all the positives, there were still a few negatives this season. The top problem that plagued the Flyers this year, was their lack of scoring. Philly ranked 22nd in the NHL, in Goals Per Game at 2.6. A big reason for that number is that the Flyers had only three players that crossed the 20-goal threshold. Wayne Simmonds led the team with 32 goals, while Claude Giroux (22) and Brayden Schenn (26) also hit 20+. Their next highest goal-scorer was Shayne Gostisbehere, with 17. It’s becoming quite clear, that if the Flyers would like to take the next step forward, they’ll need to acquire more players capable of finding the back of the net.

Another thing the Flyers lacked this season was size and physicality. The Flyers only have six skaters that are 6’2″ or taller, and only two skaters that weigh more than 205 lbs. Call me naïve here, but I believe that you need to have serious size if you want to compete in today’s league. Look around the league at these competitive teams, and you’ll see guys like Evgeni Malkin (6’3, 212 lbs), Alex Ovechkin (6’3″, 230 lbs), Nicklas Backstrom (6’1″, 213 lbs)…they’re all big, physical guys. Look back at the Flyers, and you don’t see that.  You see a team full of playmakers that get dominated on the puck, and don’t show a lot in the way of physicality.

What’s missing from this team? Physicality and players that can bury the puck.  That needs to change over the summer, and I believe Ron Hextall knows that. With that said, let’s take a look at six free agent targets for the Flyers, once July 1 rolls around.

A Busy Summer Ahead: 4 Trades To Make

Welcome to the part one of my Philadelphia Flyers offseason preview. Over these four parts, I will take a look at trades that should be made, free agent signings that need to happen, prospects that could interest the Flyers, and I’ll also project their offensive and defensive lines come opening night. Without further ado, let’s get right to part one.

The run of luck has finally come to an end, as the Flyers season has closed in what some may consider to be disappointment. On the other hand, I tend to look at the glass half-full. Yes, they lost in the playoffs. Although, it was at the hands of the league’s best team in the Washington Capitals. This is a team that wasn’t even thought of for a playoff spot back in September, yet they fought their way to the postseason. It goes to show the heart that this team has, and that the future is bright for the Flyers Organization.

With that said, there are some negatives to take away from this postseason. The main takeaway was their power-play. Any time a team goes 1-23 on the man advantage, they’ll have a hard time finding a way to win. While their struggles on the man-advantage was well-documented, they did find a way to almost force a game 7. Following their 6-1 defeat in game 3, Dave Hakstol decided it was time to give Michael Neuvirth a shot between the pipes. From there, Neuvirth stopped every shot he faced, except for two. Who would’ve figured that the one goal he allowed would be the series-clincher. That said, none of the blame can fall on anyone for their game 6 loss. Braden Holtby just stood on his head, and stopped the Flyers on every shot he faced. They gave it a great effort, but came up just short in crunch-time.

Another major takeaway from this series, was the fact that Philly was physically dominated by the Capitals. Sure, the hits may tell a different stat, but Washington was able to bully their way past anyone on the Flyers team. The Flyers severely lacked in the physicality department, and that’s simply because they are an undersized team. There’s not one offensive player aside from Sean Couturier that is taller than 6’2″. Making matters worse, there are only five players that are north of 200 lbs. While both of those facts weren’t in the Flyers favor, there was really only one reason why they fell to the Caps. This team lacks offensive talent. There’s a fair amount of talent back on the blue line, but up front we’re severely depleted. We were clearly out-played from a talent aspect.

When the Flyers clinched the final playoff spot just about a week ago, they knew that a tough assignment awaited them in the NHL-best Washington Capitals. Unfortunately, they didn’t realize that road would get tougher before the series even got into the full swing of things.

For the most part, it’s been a dull year in Philadelphia sports. The Sixers have…well, sucked for a third straight year, the Eagles played very poorly and wound up missing the playoffs for the second-straight season, and the Phillies are just getting started. In the matter of a week though, sports has become the talk of Philadelphia. Dull no more, the city is buzzing with talk of all major sports teams. To get a better idea of just how much has changed in a week, let’s take a look at the week in review for Philly sports.

Philadelphia Flyers & Jakub Voracek Agree to Massive, Eight Year Contract

It’s the end of July, which is usually associated with the MLB and their trade deadline. This time period, also just happens to fall in the middle of the NHL’s offseason. Lost in the shuffle of the Phillies active deadline week, another Philly team has quietly made some quality moves to lock up some of their young studs. Earlier this week, the team re-signed lockdown center Sean Couturier to a six-year extension. Yesterday evening, news broke that the Flyers locked up another key piece of their young core. The team announced that they had signed forward Jakub Voracek to an eight-year, $66.5 million dollar contract.

This was a significant move, that was necessary for the team’s long-term success. Voracek was a huge piece of the limited success the Flyers had last season. In a breakout season, Jake tallied 22 goals, and 59 assists, good for a 4th place tie in points last year. He was also highly effective on the power-play last season, finishing with 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists). He really came into his own last season, and stepped up as one of the leaders on this team. Paired with Claude Giroux, Voracek helps make one of the most explosive duos in hockey. Often compared to the Malkin/Crosby duo in Pittsburgh, or the Kane/Toews duo in Chicago, the Voracek/Giroux duo may not seem all that impressive. Digging deeper into things, the duo of G & Voracek have actually outscored the duo of Kane/Toews over the last three seasons, by a margin of 396 points, to 370.

Now that the Flyers have locked up their young guns, their focus will turn towards winning. The team is in a bit of a “retool” mode, and Voracek stepping up as a leader will make things easier as far as a veteran presence in the locker room. At the young age of 25, Voracek will be entering his 8th season in the league. He’s been around the block more than a few times, and has gathered some playoff experience in his time as a Flyer. At an annual value of $8.25 million per season, there are high expectations coming with this contract. Jake is strongly expected to be one of the players, that will help end Philadelphia’s Stanley Cup drought of 40 years. With a big contract, comes big expectations. He’ll be expected to meet those expectations, or he can expect to hear it from the Philly faithful.

Overall though, this is a good signing for the Flyers. Ron Hextall has done everything right in his tenure as GM, to this point. He’s centered his focus on re-tooling for the future. He’s not admitting defeat, yet he’s also admitted that the team will remain competitive. Hexy has set this team up for long-term success, and it shows from his patience with the prospects, to his ability to secure long-term commitments from the young studs. With Voracek and “Coots” already locked up, I personally have to wonder where Brayden Schenn. Is he next in line for a long-term payday? Or, will Schenn find himself on a new team by this time next year? Only time will tell, and I for one, am looking forward to what this team has in store for us this upcoming season. If you check back towards the end of August, and I will have my “Official Flyers Season Preview” up for your viewing pleasure.

Because It’s the Cup!

April 24th, 2015 by Joe Buscemi | Comments Off on Because It’s the Cup! | Filed in Flyers, General, Hockey, Sports, TalkSportsPhilly

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” Some call it Christmas, others call it the NHL playoffs. If you are a die-hard of a hockey fan, as I am then you understand just how awesome and intense playoff hockey is.

There really isn’t anything better, and this year it has lived up to all its hype.

Interesting stat, there was a seven team turnover from last year’s NHL Playoff’s (seven teams from last year did not qualify this year), the highest turnover rate in the history of the NHL. That speaks volumes of how much the game has changed, from a business/salary cap perspective, and also from the balance of talent surrounding the league.

As a Flyers fan it is obviously tough not watching them compete for the cup, however I have caught quite a few games and they are some of the most evenly matched and entertaining series’ I can remember. Old-time hockey seems to be making more of an appearance as the refs are letting the boys play and blowing the whistles less. Tons of hits, fights, highly electric offensive displays, stellar goaltending performances, and a series that shockingly ended in a sweep.

The highly talented Anaheim Ducks spoiled the Jets first playoff appearance since relocating to Winnipeg back in 2011. The original franchise was last seen in the playoffs 19 years ago. That was a tough one for die-hard Jets fans to swallow.
