Three days of the NFL Draft has come and gone. Our Philadelphia Eagles held seven selections over the three-day event, with their first pick being second overall. They made shockwaves by moving from 13th overall to eighth in a trade with Miami. Then, last week they made a blockbuster with Cleveland to jump up to second overall. As always with the NFL Draft, some picks are no-brainers, others are decent picks, and there are picks that leave you questioning the selection. In this post, I am going to analyze the Eagles draft picks, and will grade them based on my thoughts.

First Round (2nd Overall): Carson Wentz/QB- North Dakota State

I love this pick, absolutely love it. The Eagles believe Wentz is their franchise quarterback, and so do I. He’s got all the skills, and his intangibles are fantastic. He’s drawn many comparisons to Andrew Luck, and I for one feel comfortable with that comparison. With this selection, the Eagles found themselves their quarterback for the next 10-12 years. Hopefully, a Super Bowl will find itself into that time frame, as well.

GRADE: A+

Eagles-Browns Trade: Will History Repeat Itself?

“Patience is a virtue and the best things in life are worth waiting for”- Julie Spira

I bring up this quote because it seems that the common Philadelphia sports fan has very little of this anymore as it pertains to the Philadelphia Eagles, and the yearly disappointments that we have endured. This seemed to get magnified after Wednesday’s blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Browns, in which the Eagles obtained the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Now, common perception among NFL insiders is that the Los Angeles Rams will take QB Jared Goff from Cal with the top selection, allowing the Eagles to take QB Carson Wentz from North Dakota State. There are a lot of people saying that we gave up too much, in addition to questioning whether or not it’s worth it to have this pick. I think we need to take a few steps back, remember the last time we drafted at No.2, and what we obtained from that pick. Yes, I’m talking about Donovan McNabb. Before I go into the current draft situation, I want to relive this pick again for those who have forgotten how good we had it during the Andy Reid Era.

In 1999, rumors were swirling that Philadelphia would take Texas Longhorns RB Ricky Williams. Williams was fresh off of a Heisman Trophy campaign the previous year, that saw him break the NCAA career rushing record. However, the Eagles stunned everyone on draft day when they drafted QB Donovan McNabb out of Syracuse instead. I remember it like it was yesterday, because people were saying the same thing about McNabb that they are about Wentz. What followed this pick was a period of time in which McNabb sat for the first year under then QB Doug Pederson, before ultimately leading the Eagles to five NFC Championship Games, and a Super Bowl appearance in 11 seasons with the team. However, as his production slipped, he was eventually traded to the Washington Redskins in 2009. Since that point, the Eagles have gone though six starting quarterbacks in the last six seasons, and not has shown that they could be the franchise QB.

Fast forward to 2016, enter Carson Wentz. Doug Pederson is now the head coach for the Eagles, and he is a big part of the reason that this trade ultimately happened. After crisscrossing the country with the other members of the Eagles front office and working out the top QB prospects, Howie Roseman pulled the trigger on the trade which may very well land us our new franchise signal-caller. While this might be a big risk, in the end the payoff could well outweigh the risks. The Eagles already have Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel in the nest at this point, and adding Wentz will either bring out the best in him or he will succumb to the pressure of being in Philadelphia. If history is any indication, then this could end up being just as successful, if not even more successful than taking McNabb. So again, I implore you Eagles fans………… patience is a virtue.

The Eagles shocked the football world yesterday, by leapfrogging six other teams to land the second overall pick. That trade dropped the Eagles draft pick haul from nine picks, down to a total of seven. Prior to that trade, the common thought process was that the Eagles would select Ezekiel Elliott with the eighth overall pick. Following this deal, it’s widely expected that the Birds will select a quarterback with #2. Where they go beyond that selection?  Well, that is what remains a mystery. I’m here to give my thoughts on how the Eagles will draft next weekend.

For the most part, it’s been a dull year in Philadelphia sports. The Sixers have…well, sucked for a third straight year, the Eagles played very poorly and wound up missing the playoffs for the second-straight season, and the Phillies are just getting started. In the matter of a week though, sports has become the talk of Philadelphia. Dull no more, the city is buzzing with talk of all major sports teams. To get a better idea of just how much has changed in a week, let’s take a look at the week in review for Philly sports.

With the NFL Draft a little less than three weeks away, all eyes are quickly turning to Philadelphia. What avenue will the Eagles explore with the eighth overall pick?  I’ve done a pair of NFL Mock Drafts in the past, but this one will have a twist. Unlike my earlier mock drafts, this one will be solely focused on the Eagles. In addition to my selections, I will take an in-depth look at why those picks make sense. Without further ado, let’s get started…

1st Round; 5th Overall [via trade with Jaguars]- Ronnie Stanley (OT/Notre Dame)

Ryan’s Take: The Eagles have many possible directions with this pick. They could choose to address the “supposedly” glaring need at quarterback, by taking Carson Wentz or Jared Goff. Howie Roseman and Co. could also opt to strengthen the secondary by taking Vernon Hargreaves, or landing a superstar running back in Ezekiel Elliot. This time though, I’m opting to give the Eagles one of the offensive building blocks for the next 15 years in Ronnie Stanley. Recent mock drafts have selected that the Baltimore Ravens could snag Stanley with the sixth overall pick, so I tend to believe the Birds will leapfrog the Ravens to get the man they want.
