Eagles trade Brandon Boykin to Steelers

August 2nd, 2015 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Eagles trade Brandon Boykin to Steelers | Filed in Eagles, Football, NFL

The Philadelphia Eagles have traded cornerback Brandon Boykin to the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to multiple reports. The news has also been officially announced by the Eagles.

In return, the Eagles will be receiving a conditional 2016 fifth-round draft pick, which could turn into a fourth-round pick according to ESPN’s Adam Caplan.

Boykin was never able to crack a outside starting spot in his tenure with the Eagles. He was used primarily as a slot corner in nickel formation, despite being hopeful for an opportunity to start. The writing seemed to be on the wall for Boykin last season when he was never able to start on the outside over Bradley Fletcher or Cary Williams. Chip Kelly and Billy Davis prefer tall and long cornerbacks, a prototype that Boykin does not fit.

Eagles Bring Back Graham on Four-Year Deal

March 10th, 2015 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Eagles Bring Back Graham on Four-Year Deal | Filed in Eagles, General, NFL

Eagles bring back Graham on four-year deal.

According to multiple reports the Eagles have re-signed Brandon Graham on a four-year deal. The news was first reported by Birds 24/7 Tim McManus. According to McManus, Graham will be paid $6.5 million per season, along with $14 million guaranteed.

Graham was drafted by the Eagles in 2010 after the Eagles traded up to get the pass rusher out of Michigan. In his rookie year Graham suffered a serious leg injury and he struggled to get on the field for a while under former Head Coach Andy Reid. However, when Chip Kelly was hired and the Eagles switched to a 3-4 defense, Graham was moved to outside linebacker and had a breakout season last year as a rotation pass rusher.

Given the current state of the Eagles linebackers, Graham looks like he will be the starter on the opposite side of Connor Barwin. A lot is going to be expected out of Graham given the amount of money he was paid, and he will have a lot to prove as a full-time starter for the first time in his young career.

Musgrave leaves Eagles for Raiders

January 20th, 2015 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Musgrave leaves Eagles for Raiders | Filed in Eagles, Football, NFL

In what has been a routine for Chip Kelly since he joined the Eagles two years ago, the team will need to find another quarterbacks coach this offseason after Bill Musgrave left the Eagles on Monday to become the offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders.

Musgrave, 47, is leaving after just one year as the Eagles quarterbacks coach after replacing Bill Lazor who left last offseason to become the Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator. He will now work under new Raiders coach Jack Del Rio, which is a similar job for Musgrave as he served as Del Rio’s offensive coordinator when Del Rio coached the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The departure of Musgrave adds even more confusion and uncertainty for the Eagles quarterback situation, as there is no sign or guarantee of who will be the teams starting quarterback at the start of next season. If the Eagles decide to stick with Nick Foles, the next quarterback coach will be Foles’ fourth different quarterback coach in his four years in the NFL. Foles first worked with Doug Pederson as a rookie when Andy Reid was still here, then worked under Lazor in 2013, and Musgrave this past season.

There is no sign on whether Kelly will promote from within his current staff or go out and hire a new coach.
