Three days of the NFL Draft has come and gone. Our Philadelphia Eagles held seven selections over the three-day event, with their first pick being second overall. They made shockwaves by moving from 13th overall to eighth in a trade with Miami. Then, last week they made a blockbuster with Cleveland to jump up to second overall. As always with the NFL Draft, some picks are no-brainers, others are decent picks, and there are picks that leave you questioning the selection. In this post, I am going to analyze the Eagles draft picks, and will grade them based on my thoughts.

First Round (2nd Overall): Carson Wentz/QB- North Dakota State

I love this pick, absolutely love it. The Eagles believe Wentz is their franchise quarterback, and so do I. He’s got all the skills, and his intangibles are fantastic. He’s drawn many comparisons to Andrew Luck, and I for one feel comfortable with that comparison. With this selection, the Eagles found themselves their quarterback for the next 10-12 years. Hopefully, a Super Bowl will find itself into that time frame, as well.

GRADE: A+

Eagles take Jordan Hicks in third round

May 2nd, 2015 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Eagles take Jordan Hicks in third round | Filed in Eagles, Football, NFL

The Eagles added an inside linebacker to their defense with the 84th pick in the NFL Draft, selecting Jordan Hicks from Texas. Hicks (6’1, 236 lbs) has an injury history, and was projected to a 4th-5th round pick, however he has tremendous athleticism.

After tearing his ACL in 2013, Hicks came back for his senior season and finished with 107 tackles, including a six game stretch of at least 10 tackles, making second team All Big-12. He also had two interceptions and 3.5 sacks.

The pick is a bit surprising given the Eagles depth at ILB already, but at the same time this pick could be the writing on the wall for Mychal Kendricks.

Regardless of what this pick means, lets take a look at the scouting report via NFL.com:

Eagles Draft: Was Agholor the right pick at 20?

May 1st, 2015 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Eagles Draft: Was Agholor the right pick at 20? | Filed in Eagles, General, NFL

Obviously last night will be looked at as a disappointment for some Eagles fans as the team did not end up with Marcus Mariota. However, the draft continued after that dreamed died and the Eagles still had work to do. After staying at number 20, they selected wide receiver Nelson Agholor out of USC.

Agholor (6’1, 198 lbs) is coming off a 2014 junior season that featured 104 catches for 1,313 yards and 12 touchdowns. He brings a lot of versatility to the Eagles offense by having the ability to line up anywhere on the field and make plays. Scouts love his hands, he has good speed, and can jump out of a building. Pairing Agholor with second year wide receiver Jordan Mathews may be a beautiful sight for years to come in Philadelphia.

Personally, I think it was a very good pick. There was a part of me that wanted the Eagles to draft Byron Jones, but overall I think that Agholor was the better pick at the time. Along with his good route running, hands, speed, and leaping ability, Agholor is also a option for punt returns.

There is no question that the Eagles needed to address wide receiver in the draft after losing Jeremy Maclin, and while some think that the Eagles may have reached for Agholor or wanted to go defense at 20, Eagles fans will be very pleased with the production they get from the wide receiver out of Southern California.

Of course with every selection there is a flurry of reaction, so lets take a look at what others are saying about the Eagles selection:

Chip Kelly staying, Howie Roseman promoted from General Manager

January 3rd, 2015 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Chip Kelly staying, Howie Roseman promoted from General Manager | Filed in Eagles, Football, General, NFL

On Wedensday the Philadelphia Eagles fired Vice President of Player Personnel Tom Gamble. Right away there was a lot of speculation of things not flowing right in the Eagles front office, especially between General Manager Howie Roseman and Head Coach Chip Kelly. Gamble was a guy that Kelly brought in when he was hired as the Eagles coach, and was Kelly’s right hand man.

Around the league it was believed that when Gamble was fired, Kelly wasn’t very happy about the move. Reports then started to come out that there was a power struggle between Roseman and Kelly. When asked at Monday’s final press conference of the season about his relationship with Roseman, Kelly simply said “Good” and nothing else.

Which brings us to today, a few hours ago reports were coming out that Chip Kelly days in Philadelphia may be numbered. The reports stated that Kelly was upset and mad about the Gamble firing, and possibly losing some control of player personnel, something that was one of Kelly’s demands when he was being recruited by Jeffery Lurie and the Eagles to fill the Head Coaching vacancy.

Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk reported that according to his sources “something big” was going to go down in Philadelphia, but wasn’t sure of the specifics. The report, among others such as Darren DeGaetano’s (seen below) started to send Philadelphia into a frenzy that Chip Kelly who took a 4-12 team to back-to-back 10-6 seasons may be leaving Philadelphia.
