Rhys Hoskins: Year One

September 14th, 2014 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Rhys Hoskins: Year One | Filed in Baseball, Phillies

Hoskins came into the 2014 draft ranked 170th, according to MLB.com. The Phillies took him with the 142nd pick in the draft, roughly a round ahead of his projection. While Hoskins has played the corner outfield at Sacramento State and in the Cape Cod League, his speed, or lack there of, have pretty much limited him defensively to first base.

  • NCAA (Sacramento St.): .319/.428/.573 with 31:39 K:BB ratio

It’s very clear that Hoskins had an excellent approach at the plate, but his calling card is his power potential. In 213 collegiate at bats, Hoskins hit 18 doubles and 12 home runs. That’s 30 extra base hits out of 68 total hits. While those numbers are impressive, don’t expect him to be in beast mode for his career.

  • Low A (Williamsport): .237/.311/.408 with 54:21 K:BB ratio

While his Williamsport numbers are a considerable drop off, keep in mind playing professionally is basically playing a full second season for the 21-year-old. Hoskins will probably start 2015 in Lakewood, and like Chris Oliver, if he can handle it, he may make the jump to Clearwater in the second half. Unlike Oliver, I wouldn’t be surprised if Hoskins spent the entire season at Lakewood, as there is no reason whatsoever to rush him with Ryan Howard, Darin Ruf, and Maikel Franco all able to play first and all under team control for the forseeable future.

Chris Oliver: Year One

September 14th, 2014 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Chris Oliver: Year One | Filed in Baseball, General, Phillies, Sports, TalkSportsPhilly, Twitter

Chris Oliver entered the draft ranked as a player projected as an early-to-mid second round pick, according to MLB.com, based purely on projectability. A part of the Arkansas’ weekend rotation, Oliver already has a mid-90s fastball and a solid slider. In three years at Arkansas, Oliver’s walk rate always sat around 3.3 to 3.6 walks per nine. That may be the reason why Oliver ended up slipping from a second round pick to the fourth round.

  • NCAA (Arkansas): 93.1 IP, 1.11 WHIP, and 59:36 K:BB ratio
  • Gulf Coast League: 3.2 IP, 2.45 WHIP, and 4:3 K:BB ratio
  • Low A (Williamsport): 14.0 IP, 2.79 WHIP, and 6:20 K:BB ratio

Unfortunately, Oliver’s lack of control or consistent changeup lead to a high walk rate at both the collegiate and professional levels. At this point, he’s pretty much a lock to the start the 2015 season in Lakewood. If the control is there, he could be headed to Clearwater in the second half. If the control is lacking, he could bounce back and forth between Lakewood and Williamsport.

Aaron Brown: Year One

September 12th, 2014 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Aaron Brown: Year One | Filed in Baseball, Phillies

Brown was the Phillies’ first position player selected in the 2014 draft. Sort of. Aaron Brown was the Pepperdine “Iron Man” starting all 61 games including 17 on the mound. 2014 was a good year in both areas for Brown, as he led the team in slugging percentage and strikeouts (as a pitcher).

  • As a pitcher: 115.2 IP, 1.07 WHIP, and 104:40 K:BB ratio
  • As a hitter: .314/.354/.554 and 52:9 K:BB ratio

After being selected in the 30th round by Cleveland in 2013, Brown was ranked as the 120th best player in the draft by MLB.com. The Phillies may have reached a little selecting him 81st overall. It appears the Phillies intend to continue Brown’s career as a hitter, as he’s primarily played center field and right field in his first year in professional baseball.

  • NCAA (Pepperdine): .314/.354/.554 with 52:9 K:BB ratio
  • Low A (Williamsport): .256/.301/.356 with 41:6 K:BB ratio
  • Low A (Lakewood): .309/.339/.473 with 19:1 K:BB ratio

Overall, it appears that Brown has not met a pitch he wouldn’t swing at. I don’t know if I would’ve selected him as high as the Phillies did, there were plenty of high school and college hitters available. While I don’t think Brown will be seen as a wasted pick, I have a feeling we may see shades of Joe Savery.

Matt Imhof: Year One

September 8th, 2014 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Matt Imhof: Year One | Filed in Baseball, General, Phillies, Sports, TalkSportsPhilly, Twitter

Matt Imhof entered the draft labeled as one of the nation’s top strikeout pitchers by MLB.com. While he isn’t as polished as first rounder Aaron Nola, Imhof still shows rotation potential. Armed with an above average fastball, Imhof owned an impressive 11.2 K/9 in his final season at Cal Poly. While not on the fast track, he did manage to cover four levels of competition.

  • NCAA (Cal Poly): 99.1 IP, 1.09 WHIP, and 124:43 K:BB ratio
  • Gulf Coast League: 3.0 IP, 1.00 WHIP, and 2:1 K:BB ratio
  • Low A (Short Season)(Williamsport): 12.0 IP, 0.83 WHIP, and 11:4 K:BB ratio
  • Low A (Full Season)(Lakewood): 27.1 IP, 1.39 WHIP, and 27:6 K:BB ratio

While Imhof put up decent numbers, it was a little disappointing he wasn’t a little more dominant considering he was facing opponents that, on average, were two to three years younger than he was.

  • 2014 (4 levels): 11-6, 141.2 IP, 1.12 WHIP, and 164:54 K:BB ratio

Aaron Nola: Year One

September 3rd, 2014 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Aaron Nola: Year One | Filed in Baseball, Phillies, Sports, TalkSportsPhilly, Twitter

As the minor league seasons end, I thought it’d be a good time to review how some of the players out of the 2014 First Year Player Draft performed. Entering the draft, the Phillies had their sights set on LSU right hander Aaron Nola due to his perceived short timetable to the majors. Nola has done nothing but impress fans and scouts as he pitched his way into the AA Reading Fightin’ Phils rotation. Across three levels of competition, Nola did the following:

  • NCAA (LSU): 116.1 IP, 0.83 WHIP, and 134:27 K:BB ratio
  • High A (Clearwater): 31.1 IP, 0.93 WHIP, and 6:1 K:BB ratio
  • AA (Reading): 24.0 IP, 1.25 WHIP, and 3:1 K:BB ratio

As the level of competition increased, Nola’s dominance lessened, but overall he proved the Phillies made a wise decision with their first pick.

  • 2014 (3 levels): 15-4, 171.2 IP, 0.90 WHIP, and 179:37 K:BB ratio

Sixers Draft History (The 10 year edition)

Sixer Draft History

With a few games left before the NBA playoffs, many fans have their eyes glued to the TV to see where their favorite team finishes. However, Sixers fans want the season to…well…just be over. This year has been a huge disappointment as they sit in 9th place in the eastern conference with a 31-47 (.397) record. Most people would look forward to the upcoming NBA draft because it will usually result in some sort of positive and young improvement within the team’s roster. However, with the Sixers draft history over the past 5 years, I’m not so sure. This article would have probably served a better purpose at the end of the season. However, seeing them lose their third straight game last night sort of forced my hand. Ever since they drafted that one guy back in 1996, they haven’t really made a huge splash in the NBA draft since. That being said, I am going to list what I believe to be the three worst 1st round draft picks in the past 5 years.

The Worst

1. Petteri Koponen

Who is this guy? Apparently the Sixers drafted him 30th overall in 2007, and he never played a game in the NBA. Not only that, but they traded the draft rights to Dallas.

NBA Draft News

NBA Draft News 2012

With the NBA Draft just weeks away, there is a lot of talk going around about teams moving picks, and who people are expected to take. I will continue to cover all of it and have updates as soon as I hear them on my twitter page (@samshipley5) and on here as well.

Raptors looking to add a star

The Raptors currently hold the #8 pick in the draft, but they are trying to get rid of that pick. The Raptors want to acquire a star player, and they are willing to trade that pick along with Ed Davis and Jose Calderon or Andre Bargnani.
