MAXWELL FOOTBALL CLUB ANNOUNCES THE CREATION OF THE HBCU CONTRIBUTIONS TO FOOTBALL AWARD

Award to be presented to an outstanding contributor to HBCU football for efforts on or off the field

 The Maxwell Football Club (MFC), home to several of college football’s most prestigious awards including the Maxwell, Chuck Bednarik and George Munger awards, proudly announces the creation of the Club’s HBCU Contributions to Football Award which will be presented annually to an outstanding contributor from a historically black college, athletic department, football program or conference.

 HBCU football was established in the late 19th century with the first game being held on December 27, 1892 between Biddle College and Livingstone College. There are currently 21 football programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) at the FCS level. FCS HBCU football programs primarily play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) or the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). There are also 3 FCS schools, North Carolina A&T State University (CAA), Hampton University (CAA) and Tennessee State (OVC) which play in non-HBCU conferences. At the Division II level there are HBCU teams participating in the CIAA and SIAC conferences. The 2024 HBCU football season begins with the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge on Saturday, August 24th and concludes with the champion being crowned at the Cricket Celebration Bowl on Saturday, December 14th.

History Made!

The annual Schuylkill rivalry between the Villanova Wildcats and Penn Quakers was one for the ages, as Penn knocked off Villanova 24-13 under the lights at Villanova Stadium. The game start was pushed back from Saturday night to Thursday due to the arrival of Pope Francis. It was the first time since 2005 that Villanova played a Thursday night home game. A lot of history was made as Penn defeated Nova for the first time since 1911, to put that in perspective Franklin Field, home of the Quakers, was only in its sixteenth year of existence. This win was quite memorable for head coach Ray Priore, not only was it his first victory with the Quakers, but his first against Nova and a ranked team. Talk about a first impression.

There was very little for Villanova to celebrate as the team looked flat throughout the entire game. After coming off a big win versus Delaware last week, where red shirt freshmen quarterback Zach Bednarczyk led the team to victory (after taking over for the injured starting QB John Robertson who went down with a PCL injury), the team could simply not put anything together. After the first half the Wildcats went three and out three times and coughed up the football, which eventually led to a Penn touch down. The Wildcats only owned possession of the ball for a little over twenty minutes, whereas Penn owned possession for just under forty.

The numbers certainly do not lie as Penn took advantage of just about every one of their drives. The Quakers converted multiple third downs and were assisted by the multiple penalties taken by Villanova on a couple of fourth downs. Penn’s wide receiver Justin Watson had quite the night as he recorded five receptions for 87 yards including two touchdowns. Quakers quarterback Alek Torgersen wound up completing 14 of 22 passes for 171 yards, including the two touchdown passes to Watson. That would be just about all the offense Penn would need. With just under six minutes to go in the game, the Wildcats found themselves close to narrowing Penn’s 17-7 margin as they drove all the way to Penn’s fifteen yard line. However as luck would have it, Villanova’s running back Javon White would cough up the football at Penn’s ten yard line, and linebacker Donald Panciello would return it for a ninety-three yard touchdown. That was the longest recorded fumble return against Villanova. As mentioned earlier, tons of history was made during this game and it will be one spoken about for many years to come.

Villanova win Conference opener 56-7

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) — Junior running back Aaron Ball (Los Angeles, Calif.) ran for over 100 yards in the first quarter alone and No. 2 Villanova (4-0, 1-0 CAA) ran for a season-high 410 yards in a 56-7 win over Northeastern (0-4, 0-2 CAA) on Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.

The Wildcats improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2003 and won their conference opener for the third straight year. Ball ran for 109 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries and six different players scored touchdowns for Villanova, which registered individual 100-yard rushing and 100-yard receiving performances in the same game for the first time since 2005 against William & Mary.

Senior wide receiver Brandyn Harvey (Spring Valley, Calif.) caught seven passes for 102 yards to join Ball as the `100-100′ tandem in the game. The rushing total for the Wildcats was their highest since 1991 and the third-highest single-game total in school history. Villanova has had just five games with even 300 yards rushing since 1999, but four of those games have come in the last seven outings dating back to last season.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 21-0 before the end of the first period when senior quarterback Antwon Young (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) threw a one-yard pass for a touchdown to senior running back Tony Canci (Brookhaven, Pa.) with 1:40 remaining in the period. Canci had two catches for 15 yards, both of which were touchdown recptions.

This afternoon’s game was the first of two straight at home for Villanova, which will host No. 5 William & Mary next week at 3:30 p.m. The contest will be aired live on VERSUS and stands to be the first-ever nationally televised game between two Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) teams.
