Top 10 Philly Athletes of the Past 50 Years: One Man’s View

July 28th, 2019 by Jim Chesko | No Comments | Filed in Baseball, Basketball, Eagles, Flyers, General, Hockey, Phillies, Sixers

Philadelphia’s been the home base for a great number of incredible athletes over the years, but who are the best of the best?

If you’re a faiBobby Clarke and Bernie Parentthful viewer of Comcast SportsNet (I admit, I’m a heavy watcher), you know that CSN has recently been counting down its list of the Top 10 Philly Athletes of all time. (In case you haven’t been paying attention, Numbers 10 through 4 were Bernie Parent, Chuck Bednarik, Carl Lewis, Julius Erving, Steve Van Buren, Joe Frazier and Steve Carlton; will the final trio be Clarkie, Schmidty and Wilt? We shall see.)

Anyway, it got me thinking about MY list. First, however, the parameters: I decided to limit my Top 10 to players whom I’ve seen in action during the past the 50 years and who’ve played the bulk of their career in Philadelphia. So, no Jimmie Foxx or Lefty Grove (way before my time), no Pete Rose (despite how much he meant to the Phils’ 1980 World Series team), no Steve van Buren or Chuck Bednarik (amazing careers for both, but – again – before my time), no Richie Ashburn … and no Kobe Bryant.

Before giving you my personal Top 10, how about a few Philly greats who just missed the cut? Getting “honorable mention” status would be Charles Barkley, Brian Dawkins and – although he spent just four of his prime NBA years as a 76er – Moses Malone. All right, here goes…

10) JOE FRAZIER – Philly’s greatest boxer, “Smokin’ Joe” was an Olympic gold medalist and undisputed World Heavyweight Champion from 1970 to 1972, who had those three memorable battles with Muhammad Ali. Career record of 32-4-1.

9) CARL LEWIS – The Willingboro, New Jersey, sprinter and long-jumper won nine Olympic gold medals and an additional eight World Championship gold medals in the 1980s and 90s. (We won’t penalize Lewis for his inglorious 1993 attempt at singing the national anthem at a Bulls-Nets NBA playoff game.)

The Evolution of Ben Simmons

April 8th, 2018 by Christian | Comments Off on The Evolution of Ben Simmons | Filed in Basketball, General, NBA, Sixers

By Christian Klemash

Ben Simmons has evolved. And this evolution hasn’t taken centuries, decades or years. It’s taken less than one full season in the NBA.

Relentless defense. Orchestrating the offense. Vocal leadership. Unparalleled court vision. Physical domination. Points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks. Simmons is doing it all. And he’s only 21. As of today, I would take him over any other player in the NBA. He is the best player in the league – a 6’10” point guard who can dribble through a minefield, play power forward and pass like Magic Johnson. He is the complete package – and he’s playing like he knows it.

Philadelphia 76ers Draft

July 1st, 2016 by Jesse Meza | Comments Off on Philadelphia 76ers Draft | Filed in Basketball, General, Sixers

sixersdraft2016

So we all know that we have been waiting for years on this type of draft and a major change in 76ers organization.  I feel that the players we got and everything and also the players they kept is a very smart idea.  So the Sixers have been losing on purpose to make a future for their city, which I love the idea. The Sixers had to do this because it would have benefited the team later on,  which it did.  So we get a number 1 pick in Ben Simmons from LSU,  its a soild pick and he is a big man and that drives inside the paint, a go getter, and a good leader, the Sixers need someone like him to spark our city.

Timothe Luwawu is from France, he’s a high flyer which goes to the hoop and a team play maker which brings a lot to the table our Sixers.  I believe this is a steal for our team.  Furkan Korkmaz, is a shooting Guard from Turkey,  this guy is good at the defensive end and good at blocking.  I’m going to say put this man with Noel and see what happens.  He is a good shooter at any range, which we need at all times with our team because they had a hard time this past year with that.  If the Sixers could maintain good shooting and incorporate these new draft picks then the team may see winning ways again next year.  Lets see.

Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram?

That’s been the question for the better part of the last three weeks, more so since it became public knowledge that the Philadelphia 76ers became the owners of the first-overall pick in the NBA Draft. However, recent reports have suggested that things are not as cut-and-dry as they seem.

Keith Pompey of Philly.com is reporting that the Sixers vice president of player personnel Marc Eversley gave the impression that the team is considering one other player along with the duo of Simmons and Ingram, and his name is Jamal Murray. Eversley was quoted on Thursday saying, “Jamal Murray, we certainly got a chance to see him a couple of weeks ago. He’s certainly going to be one of those kids who’s going to be in contention for the No. 1 pick. We like him a lot. He’s going to bring a lot to wherever he goes in the NBA, certainly a talent.” I don’t know about you, but it certainly sounds to me like they’re big fans of this kid.

The 19-year old combo guard from Kentucky has been widely regarded as one of the top-five prospects in this draft class, according to league insiders. Although, he hasn’t been looked at in the same light as Simmons or Ingram, this most recent report could change that.
