EaglesgogreenWell Eagles fans another season is upon us and with all the off season moves and the pre season over, it leaves many wondering what the Eagles season ahead will hold for Philly fans.  With an untested and unknown new head coach Doug Pederson and their new #1 draft pick Carson Wentz as a possible future franchise QB, it leaves a lot of questions to be answered.  The Eagles made a lot of transactions in the off season and let go of a few players, most notably Riley Cooper and at the last minute Sam Bradford.  They also recently picked up Dorial Green-Beckham in a controversial move but he shows a lot of promise and remains to be seen how he will fare this year.  To see the transactions the Eagles made this year click here.

The Eagles as per the last few years have been tearing it up in the pre-season going 4-0 with an impressive win over the Colts 33-23 with Sam Bradford throwing 17/20 with 167 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Josh Huff and Dorial Green-Beckham each had a touchdown catch.  The Defense has been strong throughout the pre season and has been dominating the line led by Fletcher Cox.  The Eagles had another strong win over the Steelers in their 2nd preseason game 17-0 and finished off the pre season with a 14-6 win over the Jets.  As usual they look like they are contenders for the NFC East with these wins but as we have seen before their pre season success doesn’t really transfer into the regular season.  The surprise move of trading Bradford to the Vikings for a first round pick leaves Daniel and  Wentz as the QB’s.  Pederson stated Wentz will be the starting QB on opening day.  This last minute move changes the outlook of the season with a rookie QB at the helm.

So, TalkSportsPhilly would like to take a poll on what the fans think the Eagles record will be this year.  Answer the poll below:

Revisiting the ’94 Phillies

August 7th, 2016 by Kyle Lutz | Comments Off on Revisiting the ’94 Phillies | Filed in Baseball, Phillies

With the MLB postseason lurking, and less than two months away (they’re scheduled to start on October 4th), I’ve decided to revisit a team that, despite a mix of aging players and inexperienced players, just made it to the World Series the year prior, but was less than average the next year.

Pitching

After closer Mitch Williams gave up the infamous game-winning home run to Toronto’s Joe Carter in the ’93 World Series, it was the end of the Mitch Williams’ experiment. They acquired him a few seasons prior, and yet during his tenure here, he had 22 blown saves in 124 opportunities. In addition to that, including the blown save in game six of the ’93 World Series, he also blew four saves during postseason games. Finally, after the meltdown vs. Carter, the following off-season, the Phillies made the right choice and cut him loose. In his next season, in 25 games with Houston, he had a 7.65 ERA, and allowed 10.8 walks per nine. Including the ’94 season, the last three seasons of his career, he had a whopping 7.96 ERA in 52 games. The trade, which led to acquiring future closer Doug Jones, clearly was the right move. That season, Jones had 27 saves and a 2.17 ERA.

As far as the starting pitching was concerned, after winning the National League NLCS MVP award the prior year, ace Curt Schilling had an injury-plagued season. Due to a nagging elbow injury a couple months into the season, Schilling was sidelined for a short while, and — probably due to said injury — had a horrible year. In 13 starts, he went 2-8, with a 4.48 ERA and 9.5 hits allowed per nine. Had he been completely healthy, he would’ve been a major contributor towards the rotation. In his second year with the team, starter Danny Jackson had a solid season, going 14-6, making the NL All-Star team, and he finished sixth in NL Cy Young voting.

The rest of the rotation was well below average, averaging a combined 4.10 ERA. A year prior, minus Schilling and Jackson, the rotation was more consistent and stable. Not only did they lose Schilling for a good amount of starts, but number three pitcher Tommy Greene suffered a shoulder injury a month and a half in. In 1993, Greene was vital to the team’s success, winning 16 games and finishing fourth in NL Cy Young Award voting. That February, fairly successful starter Terry Mulholland was traded to the Yankees, in return for young shortstop Desi Relaford. The trade was a train wreck for both sides, as Mulholland had a 6.49 ERA, while Relaford’s career was well below average.

Eagles Scouting Report: Romo’s Work Ethic Remains Strong Despite Looking Overweight In Viral Picture

August 6th, 2016 by Leo | Comments Off on Eagles Scouting Report: Romo’s Work Ethic Remains Strong Despite Looking Overweight In Viral Picture | Filed in Eagles, Football, General, NFL, Sports

tonyromofatWhen the Dallas Cowboys opened training camp, a fan took a picture of quarterback Tony Romo jogging, and from the angle, the picture was taken, it appears Romo put on some extra pounds in the offseason, which has led to questions about the quarterback’s readiness for the season. Since the Cowboys are not expected to make the Super Bowl, Romo’s weight won’t have an impact on Super Bowl betting lines.

Since we live in a social media age, the picture of Romo quickly went viral, and as expected, it also became a meme. However, Romo, who has taken it all in stride, called it the least of his worries after a career filled with numerous criticisms.

Throughout his career, Romo has never been a chiseled player. But, after missing most of the last season because of a collarbone injury, Romo did all he could to get back into great shape for the season.

A day before the now infamous picture went viral, the Cowboys coaching staff raved about how hard the quarterback worked in the offseason and how good he looked.

Romo, who understands that he can only perform as well as his body allows, has been alternating upper-body and lower-body workouts several times a week with his teammates. Romo also spends an hour a day strengthening his core, which will help him avoid the back injuries that have plagued him for the past couple of seasons.

Aaron Rodgers Lobbies Referees For More Free Plays

August 5th, 2016 by Leo | Comments Off on Aaron Rodgers Lobbies Referees For More Free Plays | Filed in Football, General, NFL, Sports

The Green Bay Packers recently finished their annual training camp seminar with NFL officials and quarterback Aaron Rodgers did not wait too long to start lobbying officials about not ruling offside plays dead so he can get a free play. While Rodgers attempt to get officials to swallow their whistles on such plays will not affect NFL betting lines, it can come in handy during a game.

Because of the length of the seminar, most Packers players asked questions while referee Walt Coleman was doing his presentation, Rodgers wasted no time with his questions as soon as the presentation was over.

Throughout his career, Rodgers has been the best quarterback at creating free plays because his hard counts and cadence get defenders to jump offside, resulting in a lot of free games. Rodgers vision is also as good as it gets because he frequently catches defenses when they accidentally have 12 men on the field during substitutions.

However, now that the league is trying to make the game safer, Rodgers is convinced that the league has pressured officials to call more offside plays dead by claiming the defenders were unabated to the quarterback.

When asked about his lobbying effort, Rodgers said it does not matter what he says to the officials because they already have it ingrained in their heads how they are going to call the plays. If they feel the snap did not happen before the defender jumped, they will blow the play dead.
