TSP College Football Bowl Projections: Week 1

November 6th, 2015 by Robert Waterman | Filed under College Sports, Football, General, Sports.

Ahhh…….November. The seasons are in transition, the World Series just reached its conclusion (Congratulations to Kansas City) , the NHL and NBA seasons are in just about full swing, and for football…..it’s time to get serious, especially for the College Football scene. So with that, I welcome you to the 1st installment of the TalkSportsPhilly College Football Bowl Projections. During the course of the next 5 weeks, I will be making my projections for the College Football Playoff Games, the “New Year’s Six” games, as well as provide projections for both Temple and Penn State and where they might end up for bowl season, so with that in mind……..Let’s get Started.

Playoff Picture

So earlier, the College Football Playoff Selection Committee released their first Top 25 poll of the season. This group of 12 individuals ranging from former Athletic Directors, to former Head Coaches, to even former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice meet every week in a sequestered room in Grapevine Texas to come up with this poll. So some of you might be saying to yourselves, “What goes into this poll???” or “What does this committee base their decisions on?”

Well, the short answer is in 3 simple parts: Strength of Schedule, Head-to-Head, and Conference Championships. The last one could definitely be the tipping point come that 1st Sunday in December (Just ask TCU and Baylor last year about that). The top 4 teams in that final poll will meet in the College Football Playoff Semifinals on New Year’s Eve at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida and the Cotton Bowl Classic in Arlington, Texas (Site of last years National Championship Game). The pair of winners will then meet on Monday, January 11th, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona to crown a National Champion. So now that the poll has been explained, here is the 1st Top 25 poll of the playoff season:

College Football Playoff Top 25 as of 11-3-2015
1 Clemson 8-0
2 LSU 7-0
3 Ohio State 8-0
4 Alabama 7-1
5 Notre Dame 7-1
6 Baylor 7-0
7 Michigan State 8-0
8 TCU 8-0
9 Iowa 8-0
10 Florida 7-1
11 Stanford 7-1
12 Utah 7-1
13 Memphis 8-0
14 Oklahoma State 8-0
15 Oklahoma 7-1
16 Florida State 7-1
17 Michigan 6-2
18 Ole Miss 7-2
19 Texas A&M 6-2
20 Mississippi State 6-2
21 Northwestern 6-2
22 Temple 7-1
23 UCLA 6-2
24 Toledo 7-0
25 Houston 8-0

Kinda a surprising debut, with a few teams that I personally thought were ranked too high.  Teams such as Alabama(#4), who got their tails handed to them by Ole Miss, even though they lost by 6 points in Week 3.  And then you have Memphis, ranked 13th, despite the fact that 4 of their wins came after they had trailed by double digits at some point during the game.  Plus, their only quality win thus far was against said Ole Miss team, that I just made mention about beating Alabama. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????  But, I will digress on that until another time. So,who will be in the College Football “Final 4?” Here are my initial projections:

Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic: #1 Clemson vs #4 Oklahoma

Yeah I know what you’re thinking, but before you say anything, think about this….. Last year Ohio State was in this exact same spot before they went on a tear in November and December en route to the Big Ten Championship and eventually going all the way to the National Championship so who’s to say that Oklahoma can’t duplicate history and go on the same tear that the Buckeyes went on to end last season???

Discover Orange Bowl: #2 Ohio State vs #3 Florida

Could be a very intriguing matchup as the defending National Champions play a virtual “road game” against the surprising SEC champion Gators who would definitely have the home field advantage with the game being in South Florida.

New Year’s Six Games Projections:

Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl (December 31 2015): Alabama vs TCU

A showdown of two teams that will be looking to make a statement for the following season. Just a shame that it will be Trevone Boykin’s last game in a TCU uniform.

Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual (January 1 2016): Michigan State vs Stanford

I think it’s time we restored tradition in the “Granddaddy of them ALL” even if it’s for 1 year don’t you think????

Fiesta Bowl (January 1 2016): Baylor vs Temple

Yes I said Temple in the New Year’s Six!!!!! I think that Temple bounces back from the loss against Notre Dame to run the tables and win out including a HUGE game against Memphis on November 21st which will decide the American Athletic Conference. If they don’t win against Memphis I think they’ll be headed to Hawaii for a game against Boise State on Christmas Eve

Outback Bowl(January 1 2016): Penn State vs Ole Miss

In what could be Christian Hackenberg’s final Collegiate Game, what better way to send him off than to face the Rebels in Sunny Orlando Florida on New Year’s Day.

So that’s my initial projections on the first TalkSportsPhilly Bowl Projections. These rankings and projections WILL change over the next 5 weeks, so as NBC News Anchor Tom Brokaw once put it…….. Stay with us, we’re about to take you on an exciting and bumpy ride.
