Explaining Cody Asche’s struggles this season

The Phillies’ young, 23-year-old third baseman Cody Asche has seen his fair share of struggles thus far this season, and the learning curve for him appears to be in full effect going forward.

Asche’s in his second season with the team after being promoted from AAA Lehigh last July, on the 30th. Cody put forth a solid effort with Lehigh last year, eventually earning himself a spot on the IL team (Class AAA International League) in the Triple-A All-Star Game. Prior to his promotion to the Major League level, he was batting a solid .295, with 15 home runs and 68 RBIs to boot. He would go on to be named the team’s Player of the Month for the month of July. The Phillies’ upper management decided to call him up in order to give him an extended look at playing third base, particularly to compare him to fellow third baseman Maikel Franco, the latter of which is currently with Lehigh; filling in for Asche.

Even if Franco ends up becoming a star; all while overshadowing and making Philadelphia fans forget about Asche; if the latter doesn’t succeed in his Major League career, Asche is a piece that could remain in the organization nonetheless. This of course depends upon his willingness to be liberal; in trying new approaches at the plate, field, or within a new position on the field, given it comes down to that.

The team doesn’t have as much depth in positional spots like they did a few years ago when they had a successful blend of young stars and veterans yearning for a championship ring.

Asche somehow won a spot on the team out of Spring Training this past season over Franco, despite only hitting a meager .170 in Spring Training. In Spring Training he was tied for the team lead in home runs and RBIs with 3 and 8, respectively. Thus, it’s assumed that the team considering that fact, as well as the lack of depth at third base coming into this year, when determining whether or not he’d make the club. Apparently they saw something in him that his batting average didn’t.

Ray Emery Gets Chance To Prove He Belongs With Philadelphia Flyers

The goaltending position has always been a sore spot for the Philadelphia Flyers. Their track record with goalies is terrible and there have only been a handful of goalies (if that) that have made a significant impact in Philadelphia Flyers history.

Flyers vs Rangers Playoff Preview

April 16th, 2014 by Kyle Lutz | Comments Off on Flyers vs Rangers Playoff Preview | Filed in Flyers, General, Hockey

As we exit the NHL Regular Season and enter into the playoffs, the Flyers have a lot of question marks going forward. On the flip side, they also have some things in their favor as well heading into Thursday night’s bout with New York at MSG. Let’s look at the series as a whole.

(AP)

Series Schedule- Date/Location/Time/Channel (all times EST)

04/17- @ New York- 07:00 PM- CSN
04/20- @ New York- 12:00 PM- NBC
04/22- @ Philly- 08:00 PM- CSN
04/25- @ Philly- 07:00 PM- CSN
04/27- @ New York- 12:00 PM- NBC (if necessary)
04/29- @ Philly- TBA- CSN (if necessary)
04/30- @ New York- TBA- CSN (if necessary)

Despite posting a winning record (23-22-3), last season (2012-13) was one to forget for Philadelphia in the lockout-shortened season; as they missed the postseason for just the second time in the span of the past 16 seasons. Interim head coach Craig Berube has to feel good about that, as well as his club’s overall improvement(s) within this season as well; as they began the season at just 0-3, and were just 3-8 one month in. Since November 1st, Philly’s gone 39-22-10.

Alain Vigneault is in his first year as Rangers’ head coach, having previously coached two Canadian NHL teams in Vancouver (2006-2013) and Montreal (1997-2001). Vigneault has had success as coach, not just in the regular season either, as he took the 2011 Canucks three years ago to the Finals; before eventually bowing to Boston.

NFL Draft Day Is Here … in Movie Form, at Least

April 14th, 2014 by Jim Chesko | Comments Off on NFL Draft Day Is Here … in Movie Form, at Least | Filed in 94WIP, Football, General, NFL, TalkSportsPhilly

If you’re a hardcore fan of the National Football League, there is perhaps no more-anticipated out-of-season day than Day One of the draft. Who will go No. 1?  How many trades will be made? (Will the Eagles take a wide receiver with their Round One pick?)

Well, we’ll have to wait until May 8 for those answers in the real world, but in the meantime we have the new movie “Draft Day,” directed by Ivan Reitman (“Ghostbusters,” “Meatballs,” “Stripes,” “Dave”),  about a pro football executive in crisis mode on the big day.  That executive is Sonny Weaver Jr., fictional general manager of the long-suffering Cleveland Browns, son of Browns recently deceased former coach Sonny Weaver Sr., whom – it turns out – Junior had fired. Yes, he fired his father!

The Browns GM is played by Kevin Costner, who – with this football flick – checks off another sport in his filmography, which already included baseball (“Bull Durham,” “Field of Dreams,” “For Love of the Game”), bike racing (“American Flyers”), golf (“Tin Cup”) and, of course, dancing with wolves!    (more…)

Steve Carlton or Randy Johnson? Who was the better Pitcher??

Today I’ll compare arguably the two best left-handed pitchers of all-time in Major League history, and two of the best pitchers in general. First, I’ll list their career stats, in comparison, before I delve into specifics.

Carlton- 329-244 (.574%), 3.22 ERA, 4136 Ks, 5217.2 IP, 1833 BBs, 709 GS, 1.247 WHIP, 8.1 H/9, 0.7 HR/9, 3.2 BB/9, 7.1 K/9, 2.26 SO/BB
Johnson- 303- 166 (.646%), 3.29 ERA, 4875 Ks, 4135.1 IP, 1497 BBs, 603 GS, 1.171 WHIP, 7.3 H/9, 0.9 HR/9, 3.3 BB/9, 10.6 K/9, 3.26 SO/BB

Excluding wins, losses, and winning percentage; because I feel wins don’t represent how good/bad a pitcher was, because baseball’s a team sport; based on the stats above, they’re even at six apiece. If you take away/exclude totals, and base the comparison on averages, Johnson wins slightly 4-3 (WHIP, H/9, K/9, and SO/BB ratio).

Carlton pitched for 24 years; 15 of which were with Philadelphia, while Johnson pitched for 22. Since Johnson was traded mid-season twice, he played both 12 seasons in the AL and NL in his career, while Carlton pitched primarily in the National League with Philly and St. Louis.
