Week 9: Eagles-Bears Monday Night Football Preview

November 4th, 2011 by Scott Dargis | 1 Comment | Filed in Eagles, Football, General

While the focus of the national attention will be on the Ravens-Steelers brawl on Sunday night, Monday night features one of the most underrated match ups in the NFL. This will be the 5th straight year that the Eagles and Bears face off and the rivalry finally gets to see the lights of prime time. The Eagles come into this game brimming with confidence from back to back wins against division rivals, but yet again themselves in a “must-win” situation. If history is any indication we are in for a very close contest, however history didn’t have Jason Babin, Cullen Jenkins, Namdai Asmougha, or Jim Washburn.

Eagles Offense vs. Bears Defense

Last week against Dallas the Eagles offense performed like a well oiled machine. Dallas was content with playing a two deep zone and taking the big play away, so instead of trying to force the issue Lesean McCoy was called upon to take a bulk of the offensive load. The national audience got to see just how quick Shady can break ankles and make defenders think twice. He finished the night with 185 yards on 30 carries, and added 15 more yards with two receptions. Remember Dallas came into that game as the number one ranked defense against the run, Chicago comes into this game ranked 10th. As crazy as it is to think about this, it is even crazier to type it, gasp! The Eagles may very well be on their way to becoming a more balanced team with McCoy becoming the other playmaker on the team next to Vick.

With Shady taking over as the focal point of the offense last week, Michael Vick was able to sit back and relax in the pocket and we finally saw the quarterback that looked like the guy who wore number 7 early on last year. Efficiency and Michael Vick still don’t belong in the same sentence, but if he can continue to reel off performances like last week then maybe, just maybe us writers can find a way to place them together. It was very interesting to hear how Vick changed two plays in the redzone that resulted in touchdowns. These are the aspects of the game that show just how much times have changed for Vick. He knows where to look for pressure and how to go through the reads. That is why this matchup provides the Eagles passing game a perfect chance to keep the confidence ball rolling.
