Madson Injured?

June 24th, 2011 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Madson Injured? | Filed in General

Madson hurt since 5/20

A lot of managers will have their closer come into a tie game in the ninth if they are the home team. That wasn’t the choice Charlie Manuel made in Friday’s 1-0 win over Oakland in the series opener. Instead, he opted to go with rookie Michael Stutes, who dominated the Oakland hitters. Turns out that Manuel turned to Stutes because his closer has been pitching injured.

Madson has been having problems with his pitching hand supposedly since fielding an infield single off of David Murphy on May 20th. That’s right, Madson has been having hand issues for over a month now. Manuel wouldn’t go into specifics about Madson’s ailment, but did say that he hoped to have him for the Red Sox series next week.

Maybe that is why Buster Olney has been tweeting that the Phillies are looking strongly at Heath Bell.

Could Pedro Return?

Does Pedro have enough in the tank at 39?

If it looks like Roy Oswalt will spend an extended amount of time on the DL and Kendrick and/or Worley begin to struggle, should Ruben Amaro check the status of Pedro Martinez? If Pedro were in good shape and throwing, he potentially could be ready by the end of July to face big league hitters. That puts Kendrick back as the long man, where he has had success this season. If Oswalt comes back 100% before the end of July, that makes Worley available and gives you possibly a better option in your fifth starter. If Oswalt can’t comeback 100%, it gives you a veteran with playoff experience as your fourth starter.

Domonic Brown’s Offensive Struggles

Brown’s struggles at the plate are easier than it really seems. Now I am no professional hitting instructor by any means, but the problem is clear as day. The problem is Greg Gross in the kid’s ear. Brown has been a consistent hitter for power and average in the minors, yet he’s struggled under Gross’ tutilage. His stance is changing by the at bat. Let him hit how he knows. Now the difference between major league and minor league pitching can be huge, but Brown will never have the confidence to play like he can if you are always telling him to change something.

Roster Moves Again

As we all expected, Roy Oswalt landed on the 15 day disabled list. Chances are it’ll end up between 30 and 45 days, just to make sure the back is 100%. A healthy Oswalt would be a major acquisition in itself.

To take his spot, the Phillies recalled right hander Scott Mathieson. By bringing up Mathieson, the Phillies will round out their rotation with Worley and Kendrick for the forseeable future.

Also back with the big league club is backup catcher Brian Schneider. Schneider is being activated from the DL after straining his hamstring in Florida rounding third base.

Finally, the Phillies outrighted catcher Dane Sardinha to AAA to make room for Schneider.

Amaro’s Targets

Ruben Amaro agrees the Phillies could use a right handed bat to balance the lineup. He also would like to sure up the bullpen as well. Who would blame him after seeing Baez’ latest implosion? Could we see a blockbuster trade or should we expect smaller Pat Gillick-esque style trades? Only Ruben knows.

Michael Schwimer on the move?

June 24th, 2011 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Michael Schwimer on the move? | Filed in General

Rumor has it that there was as many as seven organizational scouts in attendance for last night’s Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs game. I’ve seen two different stories about this. One involves Schwimer being a movable piece for any trade. The other only identifies the A’s and Red Sox in attendance with the expectation that Carpenter or Schwimer will be expected to be called up for the upcoming series. It would require the Phillies to make a roster move. Either sending someone down, releasing someone, or placing Oswalt on the DL.

The Phillies have announced that Jarred Cosart and Sebastian Valle will be attending this years Futures Game in Arizona. Cosart recently threw a perfect inning in the FSL All Star Game and Valle is currently hitting .343 for Clearwater.
