Philadelphia Phillies vs. Houston Astros

Citizens Bank Park

April 1-3, 2011

The Phillies open the season against the Houston Astros. In game 1, Roy Halladay matches up against a familiar face in Brett Myers. Myers had a less than stellar spring, going 0-2 with an ERA of 9.00. The former Phil is coming off of his best year in the majors going 14-8 with an ERA of 3.14.

The Astros have five position players who have hit Halladay pretty well in limited atbats. Carlos Lee is the only Astro with more than eight career plate appearances against Halladay. So it is very likely that Halladay gets the best on some of the inexperienced players.

Game 2 features Cliff Lee vs. Wandy Rodriguez. Rodriguez also struggled this spring going 0-3 with a 8.04 ERA. Rodriguez is coming off an average season going 11-12 with a 3.60 ERA. Again, Carlos Lee is the only Astro with more than five plate appearances against the Phillies starting pitcher.

The third and final game of the series has former Astro, Roy Oswalt tentatively facing off against former Phillie, J.A. Happ. If Happ does indeed make his start, he will have a short leash due to having a strained right oblique. Happ was quoted as saying he is happy with how the oblique feels just days after tweaking it. Happ was the best of the three starters this series in spring training. He went 3-1 with a 3.79 ERA. Only two Astros have more than 10 plate appearances against Oswalt, Carlos Lee and Jeff Keppinger. The team combined is hitting just above the Mendoza line at a anorexic .217.

A major factor to watch for in this series is weather. The forecast is not looking kind for the Opening Series. Friday’s forecast is calling for rain and possibly snow combined with wind. The high is only supposed to hover around 50 degrees. Saturday looks slightly better with a decreased chance of game time rain with showers ending early Saturday morning, but it will still be cold at game time. Sunday looks to be the best day to catch a game this weekend as temperatures should be in the mid-50s near game time.
