This summer, Showtime will be airing a new unscripted television series. The show is titled: The Franchise: A season with the San Francisco Giants. From the promo I just saw, it looks as if the action picks up in early November and has shot enough footage to last thru Spring Training.
There were two main things that stood out to me. The first is how much Pat Burrell thinks he is relevant to the organization. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate everything that Pat Burrell has done for the Phillies, but he is just short of becoming a baseball after thought.
The other is Brian Wilson. He is a great talent. I’d taken a person with his skill level any day of the week. The problem that I have is it seems like he is trying to turn a clever slogan and turn it into a franchise on its own. There was a scene that featured Wilson in an orange jumpsuit with just his facial hair on the back. In this outfit, he confidently predicts that the Giants will win the 2011 World Series. I could be wrong. This could have been taken out of context, but I just find that he loses a little bit of edge by branding himself and making such bold statements.
***Update***
Giants closer Brian Wilson suffered what is called a strained ribcage muscle in a Cactus League game last Thursday. He will be re-evaluated at the beginning of next week and may miss the beginning of the season.
