Fighting to be Phils

“The Race for Chase” is in full effect and Josh Barfield, Wilson Valdez, and Delwyn Young are all making the decision of who stays with the team when they head north at the end of the month very hard on the Phillies front office. In the past week, coincidentally since Chase Utley’s injury became more prevelent, the three have stepped up their games.

  • Wilson Valdez- 9 for 15 (.600) with a double, a homerun and three RBIs
  • Josh Barfield- 5 for 14 (.357) with a double and a triple
  • Delwyn Young-  7 for 25 (.280) with a double, a homerun and four RBIs

Not only have they been making their mark in the lineup, but they also have been all over the diamond. Valdez has spent time at 2B, SS, 3B, and the outfield. Barfield has spent time at 2B and 3B. Young has spent time at 2B and in the outfield. Basically, these guys have cumutively played every position except for pitcher, catcher, and first base. If you add John Mayberry Jr. to this group of versatility, you can include 1B.

Right Field Battle NOT Over?

Losing ground?

I know this is gonna scare some people when they read it, but I don’t think that even with Domonic Brown being sidelined until atleast Opening Day, that Ben Francisco has won the everyday right field job. Francisco started off hot in Grapefruit League action, but has since cooled down. I wonder if his neck is still sore as he was scratched from a couple games recently.

The guy who is challenging Francisco? John Mayberry Jr. Mayberry has been taking advantage of Francisco sitting out. Mayberry has now received more atbats than Francisco and Mayberry is making his case to not only make the bench, but to be the starting right fielder.

  • Ben Francisco: .323/.382/. 677 with 3 doubles, a triple, 2 home runs, and 7 RBIs.
  • John Mayberry Jr.: .353/.405/.794 with 3 doubles, 4 home runs, and 9 RBIs.

Gaining steam?

Countdown to Opening Day: 19 Days

March 13th, 2011 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Countdown to Opening Day: 19 Days | Filed in Baseball, Phillies

The Phillies gave us twice the action yesterday with split squad games against the Rays and the Pirates. While Kyle Kendrick got lit up like a Christmas tree against the Rays, giving up 5 earned runs and 3 homeruns in route to a 6-2 loss, Vance Worley shined against the Pirates, going 3.1 IP and only allowing 1 earned run. The majority of the Phillies regulars seemed to just be going thru the motions against the Rays while Howard and Ibanez only managed to produce 3 of the 11 runs scored against the Pirates. So while the Phillies regulars are just waiting for the season to start, the battles for bench positioning have just begun. Now on to the countdown. (more…)
