State of the fan?

March 7th, 2011 by Mike H. | 7 Comments | Filed in General

I’ve noticed in recent days that there is a bit of a bipolar disorder among the Phillies faithful. Some are ecstatic about the season and think because the pitching is better that we should just pencil in the Phils for the World Series. Other fans have the preverbial “gut feeling” that the Phillies will struggle in 2011. I guess it can the “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is” mentallity combined with national pundits predicting the Phils will struggle with their “shaky” back of the bullpen and the loss of Jayson Werth.

I am not concerned. It is early March. People honestly don’t think that the Phillies won’t address areas of concern mid-season? People want to point out the loss of Jayson Werth as a focal point to why the Phillies offense will struggle. Let us not forget that robust .186 batting average with runners in scoring position. For some reason, I personally would be happy with a guy who can hit with runners on than only hit when the path is clear.

Understand though, I am not pencilling the Phillies into anything right now. It’s far too early to make any kind of prediction and no one knows what may or may not happen over the next six months. I plan on enjoying the ride for now. The only concern I have as of now is that I hope they bring home some of those Florida forecasts.

Countdown to Opening Day: 25 Days

Yesterday the Phillies won against the Tampa Bay Rays via a walk off single by Joel Naughton. I know its only March, but shouldn’t Maddon be playing to win? Runners on second and third with one out in a tie game? You intentionally walk the current batter at play for a groundball double play. A couple of bright spots, Ryan Howard did hit his second homerun in consecutive days, and “uber” prospect Matt Rizzotti hit a clutch, game tying homerun in the bottom of the eighth with two outs.* In the “B” game against the Tigers, the combination of Kyle Kendrick (3), David Herndon (2), Michael Schwimer (1), and Juan Perez (1) threw seven shut out innings. Michael Stutes gave up a homerun in the eighth inning with one out, but other than that, he struck out the side. John Mayberry Jr. went yard off of Phil Coke giving the Phillies the early lead. But on to the countdown. (more…)
