Countdown to Opening Day: 30 Days

Is Charlie close to being the skipper thru 2013?

Outside of Domonic Brown’s continued struggles at the plate, the only real new newsworthy note is the contract negotiations between the Phillies and Charlie Manuel’s representation. Both Todd Zolecki of and Jim Salisbury of are reporting that sides are getting closer on an extension for Manuel. Supposedly, Manuel is looking for a two year extension for around $4 million per season. If that is the case, Manuel would be here through the 2013 season.

The question from all of this then becomes, “Is Ryne Sandberg willing to wait for that day to come?” Sandberg has made it known that he wants to manage a major league team. He already left one organization for passing him over, if the Phillies extend Manuel two more seasons, will Sandberg be willing to wait until 2014 to have the full time job? Or is it possible that Ruben Amaro and company are just negotiating to save face until the self-imposed Opening Day deadline set forth by Manuel?

Is skipper of the Phils in Sandberg's five year plan?

I have reported before that I think that if the Phillies were to get into any kind of mid-season funk, that Manuel would be the one to be let go this season. Sandberg could take over in an “interim” basis and be named the full time manager at the end of the season. It just really makes me wonder what the organization sold to Sandberg to get him to make a lateral move when there were many managerial openings this past offseason.
