Roy Halladay didn’t have his best stuff last night. He gave up four runs on eight hits though 7 2/3 innings. But he still pitched – and hit – well enough to earn his 18th victory of the year, the most by a Phillies pitcher since John Denny won 19 games way back in 1983. Denny also won the Cy Young award that season. The Phils beat the Mets 8-4.
Halladay seemed to be crusing until the third, when he gave up a two out single to Mets rookie pitcher Jenry Meija. Then Jose Reyes double into the left-centerfield gap. Next Carlos Beltran homered and suddenly the Mets were ahead, 3-2.
But, as has been the case all season long, Halladay bore down, using guile, will and experienced pitching skill. He did not surrender another run over the next four innings before leaving the game with two outs in the eighth.
