AL Cy Young Race Isn’t Really a Race

King Felix Reigns Supreme

I’ll admit I thought the entire fan base of baseball as a whole, had taken at least a couple of steps forward as far as throwing old, ridiculous myths and falsehoods out the window. Apparently, I was wrong. In reality, there should be no need for an article to discuss who should win the AL Cy Young award because this isn’t even close. If not for the people who still grasp at a pitcher’s record to judge how their season played out, this would be a unanimous vote. I really honestly have gotten to the point where I feel bad for people who will say “Felix Hernandez can’t win the Cy Young! He only has 13 wins!”. Oh, he only has 13 wins? So what?

I’m going to show you on the most basic levels why wins for a pitcher are meaningless and why Felix Hernandez should be your unanimous Cy Young winner.

Lets first start by analyzing two different situations. Pitcher A goes 8 innings while allowing 1 earned run and striking out 10. Pitcher B goes 5 innings while allowing 4 earned runs and striking out 2. Pitcher A’s offense is shutout for the entire game and Pitcher B’s offense explodes for 10 runs. Well, Pitcher A gets tagged with the loss and pitcher B gets a gift wrapped win. This is the most basic level of why wins and losses are practically meaningless for a pitcher. For anyone who is still putting emphasis on wins and losses, I have a simple question for you. Do you still believe the earth is flat? Because that is the same type of logic we’re using here.

Playoff Schedule is Set!

September 28th, 2010 by Johnny G | Comments Off on Playoff Schedule is Set! | Filed in Baseball, General, Phillies

The Phillies have chosen to take the 8-day schedule, meaning the first two games will be on Wednesday and Friday.

This is the tenative 2010 NLDS schedule via MLB.com. If the Phillies choose the longer series (starting Wednesday), which they can since they have the best record in the NL, they would be able to to pitch only the “big three” on full rest throughout the series.

Doc Dominates as Phils Clinch

Doc and Chooch Celebrate Division Title

This is why he came to Philly.  Last night, Roy Halladay dismissed all the recent chatter about how he might be tired or fatigued from pitching so many innings this season.  Halladay effortlessly threw a complete game, two-hit shutout to clinch the National League East Division Crown for the Phillies.

Dominating from start to finish, he struck out six and walked none.  He faced only one batter more (28) than the minimum, and needed only 98 pitches as the Phils crushed the Nationals, 8-0.  It is Halladay’s 21st win of the year, and the Phils fourth consecutive division title.

Offensively, the bats awakened from a two game slumber.  Jayson Werth resumed his hot hitting, going 3 for 5 with a HR (his 26th) and 4 RBIs.  Placido Polanco went 3 for 4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.

Gotta Admit, Vick Looks Great

The New Ultimate Weapon?

You can just hear the dogs rolling over in their graves can’t you?  Why?  Because as hard as it is to admit, Michael Vick has looked great.  Granted the opposition has been the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars (who may be even worse than Detroit).  But Vick has done what he should against inferior teams.  He has excelled.  Look at these numbers:

In two and a half games, Vick has completed 54 passes for 750 yards with 6 TDs and no interceptions.  His passer rating is 110.20.  He has also run 23 times for (get this) 170 yards and a touchdown.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

I am still curious to see what happens when he faces a really good defense, but so far Vick looks like he will stick.
