Phillies Fire Sale coming?

Phillies Fire Sale!!

With Jim Thome being traded to the Orioles on Saturday, then Chad Qualls being traded to the Yankees, the Phillies are now engaging trading Cole Hamels.  With the Marlins sweeping us three games recently it almost seems impossible to make playoffs now.

I think trading Hamels wouldn’t be such a bad idea because of who we might get in the trade for him, being that he is a premiere player.  Then, if Phillies can’t re-sign Hamels in free agency to comeback, they would probably get two 1st round picks with the team that would sign Hamels because he will be a Type A Free Agent.  Could Shane Victorino be next too?  Yes,  there is good chance Victorino could be traded because right now he’s not doing good, but whoever trades for him he may get better because it could be a good change of scenery for Victorino. There would be a bunch of teams lined up to call the Phillies about Victorino, because earlier this season the Blue Jays and a bunch of other teams called the Phillies about Victorino.  In my opinion, if Victorino was traded then Juan Pierre would be our everyday center-fielder this year.

Phillies Notes: Utley, Victorino, Pence

June 12th, 2012 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Phillies Notes: Utley, Victorino, Pence | Filed in Baseball, General, Phillies

Back by the All Star Break?

The Phillies are one step closer to the return of Chase Utley. Utley is supposed to make his season debut, albeit in a rehab appearance for Class A Clearwater, Tuesday at home against the Tampa Yankees. With Utley starting his rehab assignment, barring any future injury, he now has 20 days before he must be taken off the DL. That puts a worst case scenario of July 2nd as to when Ut HAS to be taken off the DL if he is healthy. I’d imagine, knowing Ut’s tenacity and the Phillies’ impatience (at times), it’ll be a short rehab assignment with number 26 making his season debut towards the end of the next home stand.

In other news, the Dodgers and Andre Ethier have agreed to terms on an extension that reportedly is valued at five years and 85 million dollars (17 M AAV). That type of dollar amount could help clear up what it would take the Phillies retain either Shane Victorino or Hunter Pence. Ethier, 30, holds a career .291/.363/.481 line with 119 home runs and 20 stolen bases (51.3% success rate). Ethier could also be considered a defensive liability in the field, but his offense makes up for that.

Does Ethier's extension effect Victorino's?

Victorino, 31, is heading into free agency for the first time this offseason and will be 32 before opening day. With the Phillies, Victorino holds a career .282/.347/.444 line with 87 home runs and 175 stolen bases (81.8% success rate). So while his career numbers are slightly less than Ethier’s, Victorino also has the benefit of a higher standard of defense in his pocket. Previously, I reported that a 4/48 M dollar deal with a vesting option for a fifth should be reasonable. With Ethier’s extension, Victorino, even with a proposed discount, could be looking at an AAV range of 13.5-15.5 million over the life of his next contract.

Path To Free Agency: Shane Victorino

June 7th, 2012 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Path To Free Agency: Shane Victorino | Filed in Baseball, Phillies

For Who? Me. For What? 60 Million

In the not so distant past, players used the last year of their current contract to position themselves for a huge payday with their next contract. A good example is Aaron Rowand. Heading into 2007, Rowand was a career .279/.334/.446 hitter. Rowand had a breakout 2004 campaign in which he hit .310/.361/.544 with 24 home runs, 2 triples, 38 doubles, stole 17 bases, and knocked in 69 runs. In 2007, Rowand hit .309/.374/.515 with career highs in hits (189), home runs (27), doubles (45), walks (47), and RBIs (89). He parlayed his 2007 season into a five-year, sixty million dollar deal with the Giants. Despite being a part of the World Series championship team in 2010, Rowand never lived up to expectations and was released over a year before his deal expired.

"Is there a little something in the back of my mind, yeah. You want to have your best year.”

In the seven seasons as a Phillie, Shane Victorino has been a .282/.347/.444 hitter. Hoping to cash in on a multi-year deal, Victorino  has been having his worst year since his major league debut in San Diego. In addition to a hand injury, Victorino (.248/.316/.407) has gone on the record stating that his impending free agency has been weighing on his mind. He also acknowledges that the Phillies will have a lot of financial responsibilities going forward and that there my not be room for him on the payroll.

One would hope that Adam Jones’ recent six-year, eighty-five million dollar deal would be a ceiling for Victorino, who has stated he’s looking for a five-year deal. With an average annual value, or AAV, just over fourteen million, Victorino could be looking for something similar. Due to his age and level of production, I think Victorino’s max value should be roughly the same as Rowand’s contract, five years and sixty million dollars. Victorino has said that he would be willing to take a discount to remain in Philly, so if I am the Phillies, I’d offer a contract of four years and forty-eight million dollars with a vesting option for a fifth year. If Victorino is looking for something a bit more lucrative, I’d put him on the trade block and see what kind of offers are out there.

The Four U’s

May 24th, 2012 by Mike H. | Comments Off on The Four U’s | Filed in Baseball, Phillies

Being that we are already less than ten weeks from the non-waiver trade deadline, I’d like to throw out my opinion on how the Phillies should approach buying and selling. With the Phillies struggling as mightily as they are, one would think it would take a considerable run over the next couple of weeks for the front office to want to pursue adding pieces. It definitely appears that they should be sellers, albeit with very few chips to sell. We can break down what the availability should be by breaking the players down into three categories: Untradeable, Untouchable, Unlikely and Useful.

Leading by example. Showing you what NOT to do!

Unfortunately, the Phillies have a lot of untradeable players. Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Cliff Lee, and Jonathan Papelbon all have contracts that would make trading them hard to move, be it from lack of health, lack of production, or just inflated salaries. Together they make up roughly half of the payroll. While the pitchers have performed admirably, albeit Lee hasn’t gotten the results, the position players are what is really hurting the team. Utley’s offseason work out regimen has apparently made his overall condition worse as he officially won’t be making his season debut until long after he made his debut last season. Despite the “updates” the Phillies have provided, I am still under the impression that Howard won’t be making his season debut until after the All Star Game.

The Baby Aces may not be the answer, but they should be a part of the solution.

As far as untouchables go, there really shouldn’t be many, if any at all. I can understand wanting to hold on to the “Baby Aces” and some of the position players, but depending on the deal, just about every player should be made available. The Phillies really need to succeed at determining which players within the organization can be viable contributors moving forward.

Amaro’s AA Meeting

May 11th, 2012 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Amaro’s AA Meeting | Filed in Baseball, Phillies

Is Wheeling and Dealing again

No, Ruben Amaro isn’t a raging alcoholic, but Ken Rosenthal has tweeted that, according to multiple sources, the Phillies GM has been in contact with Toronto Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopolous about both SP Cole Hamels and CF Shane Victorino. At this point nothing is imminent, but if Toronto wants Hamels plus, hopefully the conversation begins and ends with 3B Brett Lawrie.

Phillies News & Notes: Pierre, Bullpen, Victorino

April 2nd, 2012 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Phillies News & Notes: Pierre, Bullpen, Victorino | Filed in Baseball, Phillies

Twice in the last three exhibition games, not only did Juan Pierre start in left field, but he found himself at the top of the lineup. Both games feature Pierre at the lead off, and Jimmy Rollins in the three hole. Pierre is a combined five for eight and Rollins is a combined 0 for five with two walks. Does Manuel stick with long-time lead off man J-Roll or does he go with small ball definition Pierre?

Jose Contreras is looking to start the season on the disabled list. He most likely will be eligible to come of the DL right around Easter so the person to take his spot will most likely be David Herndon or Joe Savery, as both can be optioned to AAA Lehigh Valley once Contreras arrives.

In a piece by super prognosticator Ken Rosenthal, there is a feeling that Cincinatti Reds 2B Brandon Phillips could set the bar for what type of contract Phillies CF Shane Victorino could earn. Both play key defensive positions. Both are offensive stalwarts. Victorino has expressed his desire to remain in Philadelphia, even if it means leaving money on the table.

Countdown To Opening Day 2012: 6 Days

March 30th, 2012 by Mike H. | Comments Off on Countdown To Opening Day 2012: 6 Days | Filed in Baseball, Phillies

One of the major flaws facing this Phillies roster is their age. 60% of the 25-man roster is on the wrong side of 30. This also leads into a bigger problem, the length in which their tenure lasts. Instead of looking at it with doom and gloom on the horizon, let’s take a different approach to this. Let’s take a look at what may come to pass as we have less than a week for the marathon to begin.
