Will the Eagles land Marcus Mariota?

April 27th, 2015 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Will the Eagles land Marcus Mariota? | Filed in Eagles, Football, NFL

We are sitting one day away from the NFL Draft, and the Marcus Mariota talk is more fluent and intriguing as ever. There have been countless trade rumors, including a recent rumor that would trade away two young defensive players.

However, while the Eagles have been at the center of the rumors, they are far from the only team in the mix to land the former Oregon quarterback. Over the last few weeks there is a consensus around the NFL that teams are starting to become more sold on Mariota, and that he may be able to be a good quarterback in any offense, not just Chip Kelly’s.

Teams like the Chargers, Browns, Jets, and Redskins are all teams that have been rumored to land Mariota either via trade or if we would be there at their selection. Not included in that list is the team who holds the second pick in the draft, the Tennessee Titans, who could very easily put all the months of speculation to bed for good by taking the quarterback all for themselves.

What makes Tennessee so intriguing at that spot is we know that they like Marcus Mariota, but the question is do they like him more than Zach Mettenberger? After being drafted in the sixth round last year Mettenberger started six games for the Titans, however, he failed to win a game and threw for 8 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and 1,412 passing yards.

Another way to look at that question is, does Tennessee feel like keeping Mettenberger while gaining multiple assets in a trade is more valuable than Mariota?

Chargers Look to Put Dent in Chip’s Crown at Eagles’ Home Opener

September 14th, 2013 by Jim Chesko | Comments Off on Chargers Look to Put Dent in Chip’s Crown at Eagles’ Home Opener | Filed in Eagles, Football, General

As you may know, a new Miss America will be crowned Sunday night in Atlantic City. The question for pro football fans in this area, however, is: Will Chip Kelly hold onto his new King of Philadelphia crown after the Eagles battle the Chargers in the Birds’ home opener Sunday afternoon?

There are plenty of reasons to think the Eagles will improve to 2-0.

The Eagles’ hurry-up offense rolled up 443 yards in a season-opening 33-27 win over the host Washington Redskins last Monday night, and their defense played better than most of us expected – for three quarters, anyway, until the Skins put a little fear into Eagles fans with a late rally. LeSean McCoy ran for 184 yards and seems poised for a huge season. And, except for that I’m-still-not-sure-the-officials-got-it-right backwards pass, Michael Vick didn’t turn the ball over.

Meanwhile, San Diego – playing at home later that night – used a similar script to that of the Eagles. The Chargers (who also have a new head coach, Mike McCoy) jumped out a surprising 28-7 lead over the favored Houston Texans and then tried to stave off a comeback. Unlike the Eagles, though, the Chargers let an upset victory slip away, with Houston pulling out a 31-28 win on a field goal in the closing seconds. Now, the Chargers are coming East after a demoralizing Monday night loss on the West Coast, which is always a challenge. And, to be honest, the Chargers aren’t a real good team; they’re expected to battle the Raiders for the bottom spot in the AFC West this year.

Even the Las Vegas oddsmakers seem to think the Eagles may be the real deal. The Birds are 7 1/2 point favorites to defeat the Chargers, and – on the back of that Game One victory – the odds for the Eagles to win the Super Bowl improved from a 50-to-1 longshot to a more respectable 28-to-1.

Game 2 Preview: Chargers vs. Eagles Match-Up Breakdown

September 12th, 2013 by Emily Phung | 1 Comment | Filed in Eagles, Football, TalkSportsPhilly

The second game of the season for the Birds is coming up this Sunday versus the Chargers at 1 pm. This match-up is highly anticipated due to the close similarities that both teams have. Here’s why:

  • New Coaches
    • Both coaches debut as the newest blood for these struggling football dynasties. Both Mike McCoy and Chip Kelly have already infused new life and character into the team, which was apparent from last MNF’s games. The teams’ new dynamic was a welcome surprise for fans of both teams.

Johnny G’s Week 16 NFL Picks

December 27th, 2009 by Johnny G | 5 Comments | Filed in Football, General

Money Picks

After a blowout winner on the San Diego Chargers on Christmas Day, my record now stands at 14-8 as we look to keep the good times rolling. Let’s get right to the Sunday Card.

Green Bay Packers (-13.5) over Seattle Seahawks/ 1pm Sunday

How bad are the Seahawks? That is the question this Sunday. Surely giving almost two touchdowns in the NFL is not very common but in this case it is necessary. We are talking about a Seahawks team that has struggled with every facet of the game for the entire season, and just last week lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. To an outsider looking in, it appears that this team has completely packed it in on Jim Mora. They have nothing left to play for this season, and in general are an aging team with no clear cut signs for growth in the future. Matt Hasselback is having the worst season of his career and it continues to spiral downward, big free agent signing TJ Houshmanzadeh has been nothing short of awful for them, and their defense has not stopped anyone all season.

The Seahawks have been held to 9 points or less, a league-leading four times this season. Three of their five wins came against the Lions and Rams, they have lost six games by 17 or more, and they have lost 8 games by 10 or more. Now the Seahawks head on the road out to Lambeau to face a Packers team with playoff aspirations, coming off a tough loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. As well as Aaron Rodgers is playing right now, it is going to be almost impossible for this horrendous Seahawks defense to slow him down. Look for this game to get ugly very quickly as Rodgers and the Packers make a mockery of an already disgraceful football team. Roll with Green Bay minus the big number.

Johnny G’s Christmas Day Pick (NFL and NBA)

December 25th, 2009 by Johnny G | 35 Comments | Filed in Football, General

Ho Ho Ho!

I would like to start off by wishing everyone and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Nothing better than a little Christmas Day football but don’t forget to tune into the Lakers Cavs game while you are killing time till 7:30. Now down to business. After a brutal Sunday my record still stands at a respectable 13-8 overall and I fully intend to right the ship this Christmas Day. Enjoy the pick and the game. I have not been giving out NBA picks due to the overall number of NFL games to choose from but with only one game going tonight at 7:30, my basketball pick of the day will be the Lakers minus the number over the Cavs.

San Diego Chargers (+3) over Tennessee Titans/ 7:35 pm Friday

The Chargers enter this game having won 9 games in a row and they look to push their streak to double digits tonight in Tennessee. This will be a gruesome matchup between two very physical football teams that can move the ball on the ground and through the air. Bolts’ QB Philip Rivers is playing the best football of his career and the combination of Darren Sproles and Ladainian Tomlinson are getting it done on the ground. With a receiving group of Antonio Gates, Vincent Jackson, Malcom Floyd, and Legedu Naanee they are almost impossible to match up against.

On the other hand you have a Titans team who started off the season 0-6 and has since rebounded dramatically to now stand at 7-7. That’s a record of 7-1 since Jeff Fisher gave the reigns over to Vince Young. The Titans also have some guy named Chris Johnson, I don’t know if you’ve heard of him but he is challenging Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing record. He needs 270 yards in the final 2 games to break the record and he is currently running like a man possessed. Any defense will have their hands full trying to stop him on any given week.

Johnny G’s Sunday NFL Picks (Recap)

November 22nd, 2009 by Christian | 4 Comments | Filed in Football, General

4-1 in his last five picks, here are Johnny G’s Sunday picks (originally posted Wednesday):

Oakland Raiders (+10) over Cincinnati Bengals/ Sunday 4:15 pm- After an extremely physical and emotional game against their divisional rivals, the Bengals will come into this game flat. Cedric Benson will most likely not play in this game, and if he does, will not be effective because of a hip flexor strain. Recently signed Larry Johnson will not be able to get the job done against an above average Oakland Raiders defense. The Raiders come into this game after an embarrassing loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, where starter Jamarcus Russell was benched for journeyman Bruce Gradkowski. Look for the Raiders to come ready to play and keep this game close. They may not win this game outright but it will be much closer than the public and odds makers expect. Take the points as the Raiders keep this game within the number.

Bengals 17 Raiders 14

Indianapolis Colts (-1) over Baltimore Ravens/ Sunday 1pm- After struggling in a primetime division game against a horrendous Browns team, I expect this Ravens team to get blown out of the building. Peyton Manning comes off of a stellar performance against Tom Brady and the Patriots, and the Colts offense is clicking on all cylinders. On the other hand, Joe Flacco and the Ravens come back after a short week and one of the ugliest prime time football games you will ever see as Baltimore struggled to score any points whatsoever against the Cleveland Browns. If Brady Quinn could accurately throw a five yard curl route or if his coaching staff had a sliver of confidence in him to throw the ball more than twelve yards down the field, the Ravens may have lost this game. Take the better team with the better QB on the road in a pick-em situation here.

Colts 31-Ravens 14

Philadelphia Eagles (-3) over Chicago Bears/ Sunday 8:20 pm- After a tough loss to the San Diego Chargers in San Diego, where the Eagles threw the ball a shocking 82% of the time, look for the offense to balance out this week and get back to basics. This Chicago Bears team is very average on both sides of the football at this point after losing their defensive leader Brian Urlacher for the season. They have no real number one receiver and Matt Forte has been invisible all season. Without a running game, look for Sean McDermott to confuse Cutler with blitz after blitz and watch the turnovers pile up. Although Brian Westbrook is out, the offense moved the ball effectively against a better Chargers defense and really should not have much of an issue at all. The Birds should not have trouble covering this field goal on the road.

Eagles Face Stiff Test in SD

November 15th, 2009 by Christian | 8 Comments | Filed in Eagles, Football, General

Chargers On A Roll

The Eagles have been an enigma thus far. After starting the season 3-1, they fell to the hapless Raiders. The following week, they blew out the Giants, only to lose to Dallas in last week’s nationally televised Sunday night game, that was highlighted by horrendous clock management and all too familiar tight play.  When the Eagles are good, they’re very good. Their five wins this year have been by an average of 20 points. But in close games, they’re terrible. In their last 10 games decided by seven points or less, the Eagles are 1-8-1, including a 32-25 defeat at Arizona in last year’s NFC championship game.

The Chargers appear to be a team on the rise. After starting the season 2-3, San Diego has won three in a row, including last week’s 21-20 victory over the Giants in New York that was capped by an 80 yard scoring drive in the final minutes.  It was the fourth time in the last thirteen games Chargers QB Philip Rivers has engineered a game winning drive in the fourth quarter.

Rivers has thrown for over 2,200 yards through eight games and his receivers should give the depleted Eagles secondary some trouble.

Key Player: Brian Westbrook returns after missing two weeks with a concussion.  San Diego is 26th in the league against the run.

Prediction: In spite of what looks like a game favoring the Chargers, I think the Eagles will thrive on being the underdog, and benefit from getting away from the Philly media.  They play well with a lead, so if the Eagles get up early, it’s trouble for San Diego.  I like the Eagles in a high scoring game:
