Johnny G’s MLB Power Rankings Part 6

May 10th, 2010 by Johnny G | 28 Comments | Filed in General

1. New York Yankees (2) (21-9)- The Bronx Bombers regain the top spot in the rankings and continue to play phenomenal baseball this year. If Javier Vazquez was not struggling so badly, this team may be 26-4 at this point. This team as a whole is throwing some impressive numbers out there. They are first in the AL in average, runs, OBP, OPS, and slugging. In addition to the offensive numbers, the Yanks are 2nd in the league in ERA, batting average against, OPS, and WHIP. This team might win 115 games. Very impressive squad.

2. Tampa Bay Rays (1) (22-9)- The Rays still own the best record in baseball and I could have kept them in the same spot atop the rankings but their offensive production throughout the past week has been alarming. Anytime a pitcher like Dallas Braden throws a perfect game against you, there is reason to be concerned. With that all being said, every pitcher in the rotation has en ERA under 3.50 and only two pitchers on the entire roster have ERAs over 4.00. I have a feeling the Rays and Yanks will be jockeying for the top stop all season long.

3. Minnesota Twins (3) (21-11)- The Twins swept the Tigers at home and then split their series with the Orioles, all with superstar Joe Mauer on the shelf for the week. Mauer did come back on Sunday to DH and appears to be ok going forward. Francisco Liriano continues to dominate with a 2.36 ERA and Mauer and Morneau are hitting .341 and .339, respectively. This team is the real deal, folks.

4. Philadelphia Phillies (5) (19-12)- If Jayson Werth is not the front-runner for the MVP award right now, I’m not sure who is. This guy is just spraying balls all over the yard and it is truly impressive to watch. The Phillies had a very impressive week, taking 3 of 4 from the Cardinals and 2 of 3 from the Braves. Carlos Ruiz leads the league in OBP and this lineup continues to pummel opposing pitchers. In years past Ruiz was the only “break” in the lineup for opposing pitchers but now with his new plate approach this lineup is just murder.

5. St. Louis Cardinals (4) (20-12)- The Cards pretty much treaded water this week, but due to the impressive performance by the Phillies, they move down this week. Colby Rasmus is sporting a flashy 1.028 OPS and rookie Jaime Garcia has a 1.18 ERA in addition to the usual weapons this team has on a nightly basis. The team leads the league in ERA and the starting staff has given up so few homerun balls, you can count them on one hand. Here is some bad news for the NL Central, Albert hasn’t even gotten hot yet.

Johnny G’s MLB Power Rankings Part 5

May 3rd, 2010 by Johnny G | 10 Comments | Filed in General

1. Tampa Bay Rays (1) (18-7)- The young Rays still own the best record in baseball after going 4-2 in the 5th week of the season. This team has a collective 3.14 ERA on the season and are first in batting average against, whip, quality starts, and runs scored. They are also in the top 5 in every other offensive category you can imagine. No pitcher in the starting rotation has an ERA above 3.38 and that belongs to James Shields. After Shields it is Garza with a 2.06 ERA, Jeff Niemann 2.76 ERA, David Price 2.34 ERA, and finally rookie Wade Davis with a 2.79 ERA. Unbelievable what this team is doing.

2.New York Yankees (2) (16-8)- The Bronx Bombers continue to play well after a week where they took both of their series. Robinson Cano is absolutely ripping the cover off the ball right now and leads the team in batting average, RBI’s, runs scored, and OPS. With the Rays and Yankees playing like this, the rest of the AL better win their division to get into the playoffs, because the wild-card is off limits at this point.

3. Minnesota Twins (3) (16-9)- The top several spots here have stayed pretty much the same with no one really distancing themselves from the field. I’m sure Twins fans expected more this week than a split but still an impressive week for Francisco Liriano, who has a 1.50 ERA after his impressive start on Sunday. Justin Morneau continues to hit well despite his lower back issue early in the week but Joe Mauer has a bruised heel that has kept him out for several days. This team will struggle if Mauer misses significant time.

4. St. Louis Cardinals (4) (17-8)- Very, very impressive showing for the Red Birds this week. After a four game sweep at home over Atlanta, the Cardinals took the final series of the week over the Reds. This team is top 10 in any category you can imagine, offensively or pitching-wise. Chris Carpenter is just fine after having some early season scares and Colby Rasmus is blossoming into a pure superstar right in front of our eyes. Carpenter, Wainwright, Penny, and Garcia all have ERAs under 3.00. Simply Amazing.

5. Philadelphia Phillies (5) (14-10)- I can’t quite figure this team out. Every time I think they don’t have nearly enough pitching to win consistently, they go out and totally out-slug their opponents like they did to Johan Santana on Sunday. Believe it or not Raul Ibanez is on a four game hitting streak, raising his average to a whopping .224. Nice work Rauuuul. Kyle Kendrick and Jamie Moyer at the back end are putting too many innings on the bullpen but they are winning games right now. Blanton will be back soon and that will shore up some loose ends on the pitching staff.

Johnny G’s MLB Power Rankings Part 4

April 26th, 2010 by Johnny G | 6 Comments | Filed in Baseball, General

1. Tampa Bay Rays (2) (14-5)- This is the first time this season the hated Yankees have been knocked from the top spot. The young Tampa Bay Rays sport the best record in the majors. Ten pitchers on this staff have an ERA below 4.00 and they are now first in the MLB in runs scored and stolen bases. They are first in the MLB in batting average allowed and second in the league with a 3.38 team ERA. David Price also threw a complete game shutout on Sunday. This team is playing scary good right now.

2.New York Yankees (1) (12-6)- The Yanks move down one spot in the rankings after a week where they dropped a 3 game set to the Angels and won a 3 game set from the light-hitting Athletics. Javier Vazquez is not making a smooth transition from the NL to the AL, as he struggled mightily on Sunday. On the other hand, Andy Pettite is pitching like he is 10 years younger with a 1.29 ERA and Robinson Cano is sporting a 1.092 OPS.

3. Minnesota Twins (3) (13-6)- The Twins stay in the same spot this week after winning both of their series with the Indians and Royals. Justin Morneau, Joe Mauer, and Michael Cuddyer are like murders row right now for opposing pitchers. Liriano, Slowey, and Pavano are anchoring the staff right now and Scott Baker will improve as the season goes on. Jon Rauch blew his first save of the year on Saturday but the team rebounded to get the win.

4. St. Louis Cardinals (5) (11-7)- This team is coming along nicely. Predictably, Albert Pujols leads this team in just about every offensive category imaginable. If you need any evidence of the difference in competition level between the AL and NL, look no further than Brad Penny. Penny has a 0.94 ERA through 3 starts and is absolutely dominating after being cut from the Red Sox almost a year and a half ago.

5. Philadelphia Phillies (4) (11-7)- The Phillies took the series over the Braves early in the week and then dropped a series on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Against Arizona, the Phils faced possibly the three worst pitchers you will see on the same team. Ian Kennedy, Rodrigo Lopez and Kris Benson are all bottom of the barrel retreads. Injuries are taking a toll on this team right now, as they continue to slide down the rankings. Roy Halladay has a 0.82 ERA and Jayson Werth is really hitting the ball well with a .333 average. Joe Blanton will be back soon along with other reinforcements.

Johnny G’s MLB Power Rankings Part 3

April 19th, 2010 by Johnny G | 24 Comments | Filed in General

1. New York Yankees (1) (9-3)- The defending World Champs still hold onto the top spot in the rankings, coming off of a week where they went 5-1, taking a series from the Angels, and sweeping the surging Texas Rangers. They are now tied for the best record in the MLB, even with Mark Teixeira hitting .114.

2. Tampa Bay Rays (4) (9-3)- What a week for the Rays. This team is now tied with the Yankees for the best record in the Majors after going 6-0, sweeping both the Orioles and Red Sox on the road. Matt Garza has gone at least 8 innings in every start this season, and with Pat Burrell producing out of the DH spot, this team is clicking on all cylinders.

3. Minnesota Twins (8) (9-4)- Is Francisco Liriano back? It looks like he just might be. Add him to the way Scott Baker is pitching and that is a very formidable top 2 in the rotation. Pavano looks like he did back on the Marlins and the M+M boys continue to rake. As long as Rauch continues to hold down the 9th inning, this team could go very deep into the playoffs.

4. Philadelphia Phillies (3) (8-4)- Just as many feared, the Phillies are 1-2 when facing teams other than the Astros or Nationals. Even when beating those teams, they were missing Lance Berkman and Ryan Zimmerman. There are major concerns in the rotation right now until Joe Blanton returns. The Phils offense has also struggled mightily against quality pitching. They managed just 2 runs off of Roy Oswalt and scored one run off of Ricky Nolasco, thanks to Jayson Werth’s 2 out solo shot in the ninth on Saturday night. Nate Robertson, Detroit Tigers’ castoff shut this team down on Sunday, pitching 6.1 innings. Raul Ibanez is also hitting .171.

5. St. Louis Cardinals (7) (8-4)- After some concerns about Chris Carpenter, he went out and threw a 7 inning gem, while striking out 10. Adam Wainwright threw a complete game on Sunday night and provided much needed rest to the bullpen after the 20 inning marathon on Saturday. Back to back 4-2 weeks for the Redbirds and Jaime Garcia in the 5th spot is pitching incredibly. This team is very dangerous.

Johnny G’s MLB Power Rankings Part 2

April 12th, 2010 by Johnny G | 17 Comments | Filed in Baseball, General

This is the 2nd edition of the weekly “Johnny G’s Power Rankings”. The team is listed, followed by their record to date and then their previous rank on the list from last time.

1. New York Yankees (4-2) (1)- The Bronx Bombers had a pretty successful week one of play, with nothing transpiring to knock them from their top spot on the rankings. Sabathia almost no-hit the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, A.J. Burnett is settling in, and their lineup appears to be clicking on all cylinders. The ageless Mariano Rivera also has not missed a beat. It’s going to be tough to keep this team from winning the AL.

2. Boston Red Sox (3-3) (2)- David Ortiz’ 2010 season is suddenly looking very similar to his frustrating start to the beginning of the 2009 campaign. While Big Papi eventually rebounded, it would be for the best, for both the team and Ortiz, if he started hitting very soon. His struggles can only be a distraction. Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Bucholz, and Wakefield still make one of the best rotations in the game.

3.Philadelphia Phillies (5-1) (3)- As incredible as the Phillies have looked this season, the caliber of their opponents this season is preventing them from moving up on my list. Doc Halladay has performed as advertised, after a complete game gem against the punch less Astros and the entire offense, other than Shane Victorino and Raul Ibanez are scalding hot right now. The only questions that linger with this club is the back end of the pen and if Ryan Madson can handle the 9th inning duties. Brad Lidge continues to struggle on his rehab assignment and is giving Phils fans more reason to worry by the day.
