Super Bowl 50 Preview, Analysis and Prediction

February 1st, 2016 by Kyle Lutz | Comments Off on Super Bowl 50 Preview, Analysis and Prediction | Filed in Football, General, NFL

In the first Super Bowl without roman numerals attached to the title, it should be a good one, with two of the best quarterbacks in recent history squaring off against each other. One of the two’s a future hall-of-famer, and arguably the best signal caller in NFL history, in Denver’s Peyton Manning, who’ll most likely retire after the game (at age 39), and the other’s a future-MVP (who could very well win it after this year) in Carolina’s Cam Newton.

Carolina finished with one of the best regular seasons in NFL history this year, starting their season 14-0, and ending up as the NFC’s # 1 seed, at 15-1. They led the league in most All-Pros selected, with six, and Pro Bowlers selected, with 10. With their 15-1 regular-season record, they became just the sixth team in NFL history to accomplish the feat, since the league adopted a 16-game-schedule format in 1978, and just the seventh team to win at least 15 or more games in a season (in 2007, New England went undefeated).

Out of those seven teams, only two (the ’84 49ers and ’85 Bears) teams won the Super Bowl. Carolina’s head coach, Ron Rivera, was a backup linebacker on that ’85 Bears team. This is his fifth year coaching the team, and only his second winning season so far. On the flip side, Denver’s head coach, Gary Kubiak, is in his first year with Denver, after coaching Houston for eight seasons from 2006-13. This season was Kubiak’s reunion with Broncos’ GM/executive VP of Football Operations, and Hall of Famer, John Elway, after the former backed up the latter in Denver years ago (1983-91).

Peyton Manning certainly has experience, whether that’s a good or bad thing, in postseason games, as he ranks second all-time in quarterback postseason starts. Next Sunday’ll be his 27th career postseason start, which will keep him in second place, four games behind his rival Tom Brady, who he beat in the AFC Championship Game a week ago. Manning is 13-13 in those games, with one Super Bowl win, while Brady is 22-9 in 31 playoff starts, with four wins.

2011-12 NFL Preview: NFC South

August 15th, 2011 by Scott Dargis | Comments Off on 2011-12 NFL Preview: NFC South | Filed in Football, General

It is almost that time of the year when the temperature begins to cool down, kids are on their way back to school, but most importantly those Sundays filled with wings, beer and friends are back. Of course I am talking about the NFL. During this series I will take a look at the league division by division and give you my predictions for the season. Starting of let’s take a look at the NFC South. I personally think that this will be the most competitive division in football this year.

The Saints and the Falcons both have reasons to believe that they are the best in not only the division but the NFC. Don’t count out the emerging Tampa Bay Bucs. They were one win away from making the postseason last year. Lastly the Carolina Panthers have reasons to be excited, Cam Newton the number one overall pick in this year’s draft will at some point this season become the starting quarterback for the Panthers, and it might just be week 1.

New Orleans Saints

For the 2009-10 Super Bowl champions, last year’s playoff run ended in a stunning loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Even though the Saints were quickly forgotten about last year, they should not be slept on this year. The Falcons emerged as the team to beat in the NFC South last season and the Saints are ready to claim that title back.

There have been a few changes in the offseason for the Saints, Reggie Bush has taken his talents down to South Beach and subsequently Darren Sproles was signed to a four year dear. The Saints upgraded in this department, Sproles has proven that he can be not only a return man, but a pretty good pass catcher out of the back field. Look for Drew Brees to use Sproles in the screen passing game.

Johnny G’s Week 12 Picks

November 29th, 2009 by Johnny G | 2 Comments | Filed in General

After a tough loss on Thanksgiving with the Raiders, my record now stands at 8-2. This is a light football card, so there will only be two picks this week.

Miami Dolphins(-3.5) Over Buffalo Bills
Coming off an impressive Thursday night win over the Carolina Panthers, the Dolphins enter this game clicking on all cylinders. Chad Henne is effectively running a traditional offense and Ricky Williams looks like he did five years ago. The Bills come into this game in a state of turmoil after head coach Dick Jauron was fired and their new interim head coach has decided to yet again switch quarterbacks. The Bills will not be able to stop Williams on the ground and the Dolphins cover the 3.5 on the road. Roll with the fish.

Double Your Money Pick of The Week

Seattle Seahawks (-4) over St. Louis Rams
With Marc Bulger out of this contest and Steven Jackson currently listed as questionable, the Seahawks should not have much of a problem with this horrific Rams team. Matt Hasselback along with Julius Jones should be able to muster up enough offense to get the job done and with Kyle Boller now leading the Rams, they very well may get shutout. This is a pretty easy winner. Take the Seahawks laying four on the road.
