The MLB Non-Waiver Trade Deadline is just hours away, and the rumor mill is buzzing.  The team with the most buzz surrounding it are the hometown Phillies. The Phillies are in a difficult position.  They currently possess the highest payroll in team history, yet still sit in the basement of the NL East, leaving fans to question “Why?”.  Simply put, the roster is full of overpaid players that are underperforming. From Jonathan Papelbon to Ryan Howard, the Phillies are stuck underneath some of the worst contracts in the MLB today, thanks to GM Ruben Amaro Jr. Inching towards this years Trade Deadline, the Phillies have been rumored to be the most active team by far, wheeling and dealing their way into a rebuild.  However, with 24 hours or so remaining until 4PM EST Thursday, the Phillies have yet to make any type of move, and show no signs of making moves.

According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Phillies are currently “frustrated” with the offers their receiving on their players. Ken Rosenthal adds that the Phillies are “adamant that they won’t give players away” and “don’t need to cut payroll”, citing that they can always “try again in offseason if necessary.” Rosenthal, among others have noted that Amaro’s asking price on players like Ryan Howard, Cliff Lee, and Jonathan Papelbon are large and steep, leading to the lack of interest. Sources reported late Wedensday night that the Phils were “willing to include cash” for better talent in deals.  With the rumor mill on overheat, but no deals even close to being completed, it leads me to wonder if Ruben and management are really committed to rebuilding?
