Howard & Co. Look Mystified at the Plate

Series Recap: August 26th, 2010

The Houston Astros have the Phillies number. Simple as that. Today, the Astros beat the Phils 5-1, and became the first team ever to complete a four-game sweep of the Phillies at Citizen’s Bank Park.

That’s right. The Astros, who came into the series with a record of 54-69 took four straight from the two-time National League Champs in their own back yard.

Prior to meeting the Astros, the Phillies were red hot, and had won 20 of their last 25 home games. The offense was rolling and their rotation has never been better.

Then, the Phillies offense disappeared. They scored just 7 runs in four games! Ryan Howard and Chase Utley both appear to be far below 100% and continue to struggle mightily. Phillies fans are scratching their heads.

One ray of light is this – some teams just give you trouble, regardless of standings. And the Astros are that team against the Phillies. They are the only NL team with a winning record (30-16) against Philadelphia since 2004.

And the Phillies have played down to their competition this year, going 21-19 against clubs that are 10 games or more below .500.

Hopefully a change of scenery will do them well. as they travel to San Diego for a three game set against the NL West leading Padres.

The Phillies are a half game behind San Francisco in the Wild Card and three games behind the Braves in the NL East.
