Sixers Win 5 in a Row

February 10th, 2010 by Johnny G | 10 Comments | Filed in Basketball, General, Sixers

Go Ahead, I dare ya to try and take it!

That’s right you heard it here first. The 76ers have won five games in a row. Don’t look now but the once cellar-dwelling Sixers are now 20-31, leaving them just 4.5 games out of the 8th and final playoff spot in the East. Before this recent hot streak the Sixers were well on their way to a lottery selection in the upcoming draft at 15-31, with only the New Jersey Nets behind them in the standings.

If you look further into the winning streak the Sixers have beaten the lowly Nets with a record of 4-47, then traveled to New Orleans and beat the Hornets without superstar point guard Chris Paul. Next was their most impressive victory of the streak when they came back from an 11 point second half deficit to beat the surging Houston Rockets. Finally, just last night they trounced the horrendous Minnesota Timberwolves by 22.

The talent level of the teams they have beaten in this recent run is not the best, but for a team of the Sixers caliber, a five game win streak is impressive nonetheless. This recent win streak also causes an issue for many Sixers fan that did not exist just a week ago. Do you continue rooting for the Sixers to lose in pursuit of a lottery pick and the draft rights to Kentucky star point guard John Wall? Or do you root for the Sixers to win and capture that final playoff spot, even though they will certainly be eliminated in the first round after facing Cleveland or Orlando?

The obvious answer is to root for the lottery selection but it is not always that easy. Naturally you want to root for your team to win and for the opportunity to see them succeed, or at least for the Sixers sake, participate in the playoffs.

The constant throughout this win streak is the absence of former star and Philadelphia icon, Allen Iverson. Iverson missed all but the first game of the win streak and the overall energy on the team has been on the rise during his absence. One would think due to the success of the team without him that when Iverson returns to the team it will be in a bench role. How that will go over in the locker room remains to be seen.” The Answer” has averaged 14.4 points since his return to the city of brotherly love but the team has largely struggled since he was acquired.

Johnny G’s Week 14 NFL Picks

December 12th, 2009 by Johnny G | 5 Comments | Filed in Football, General

CASH-STACKS_t290

After an easy Monday Night winner on the Green Bay Packers, my record now stands at 11-5 overall. Lets get right to the Week 14 card.

Green Bay Packers(-4) over Chicago Bears/ 1pm Sunday

We are going to back the Packers again this Sunday as they take on a Bears team on the road, who could not put the Rams away. Last Sunday I told you the Bears would not be able to distance themselves from the Rams because of the running game disparity and that’s exactly what happened. This time we have a Bears team that is still struggling on both sides of the ball and Jay Cutler has still not improved. Forte is still not getting the job done on the ground and we have a defense with more injuries than ever before.

The Packers come into this game after an impressive victory on Monday night over the Baltimore Ravens. The final score did not indicate how badly Green Bay dominated this game. They jumped out to a 17-0 lead at halftime and completely stifled Joe Flacco and the Ravens offense. The one weakness of this Packers team the entire season has been their defense. Now that the defensive unit is pulling their own weight, this is very dangerous team and could cause issues in the playoffs for anyone who faces them. Aaron Rodgers continues to impress as his offensive line continues to improve. The group becomes more cohesive with each passing week. Donald Driver continues to prove his doubters wrong and Ryan Grant has done a fine job taking pressure off of Rodgers.

The Packers will be entirely too much for the Bears to handle on Sunday as the different blitzes and schemes from Dom Capers will have Cutler’s head spinning. Take the Packers minus the points as this one ends in a blowout.

Double Your Money Pick of The Week
Indianapolis Colts (-7) over Denver Broncos/ Sunday 1pm

The Broncos enter this game at 8-4, after winning two straight contests against the struggling New York Giants and the lowly Kansas City Chiefs. Before this mini-winning streak, the Broncos were an absolute mess, having dropped five straight after winning their first six contests of the season. Overall this team is not as good as they have shown, and on the other hand they are not as bad as they have played at times. Much credit should be given to Josh Mcdaniels for having the success he has this season with Kyle Orton under center. His lack of arm strength has not been exposed to this point in this season as it was when Orton was with the Bears and the different formations and schemes seems to be working well enough to get by with a refurbished defense.

talksportsPhilly Updates and Usage (Edition 2)

December 1st, 2009 by ChrisLeo33 | 2 Comments | Filed in General, Twitter, talksportsPhilly

talksportsPhilly Updates

Hello Philly,

Since our last edition we have added several updates and enhancements that you should be aware of.

First, we have added radio functionality to the site as well as a page listing the different radio stations serving the Philadelphia area. If you really want one on the page that is not listed, just make a suggestion or leave a comment.  The Radio opens up as a separate tab or window and usually plays an advertisement before the station starts.  This is true on the actual station site as well, so there is not much I can do about it.

Second, we have added the Most Viewed Posts This Week on the sidebar underneath the talksportsPhilly Authors.  Speaking of Authors, we have added a couple more inspiring authors. Welcome to JimmyScrenci and DanMurphy, we expect great things from you.

Third, we have enhanced the Dashboard part of the site for the members.  You will notice that you get the headlines from ESPN, Yahoo Sports, and ABC News displayed.  There is also a new menu that goes across the top of the page in black.  Depending on your level at the site (i.e. subscriber, contributor, author, moderator, administrator) you will see different options and information available.  Of course, me and CK reign supreme.

Fourth, we have added a social networking part of the site.  Under the Scoreboards/Pages section in the sidebar.  We are still tweaking it but, you can create a social profile and converse with other members of the site in a Facebook type fashion, be sure to check it out, I should be your default friend when you become a member, so you can always communicate with us in there.
