I’d like to preface this post with the acknowledgement that I am not a fan of professional basketball. I follow certain college basketball teams due to relationships associated with the team, but other than that, I’d be more likely to watch the replay of the second half of game five of the 2008 World Series. With that being said, I actually found myself listening to the Philadelphia-Denver game on the radio this evening on my way to the gym. Not only was I listening, I was completely interested. I listened to the end of regulation and quickly headed in to catch the overtime period as I started my workout. Even though they lost, I had more interest in the game than when the team made their magical run to the NBA Finals in 20o1.
For some reason, this Sixers team has basically flown under the radar in this lockout shortened NBA season. The Sixers currently stand at 10-4, in first place in the Atlantic Division, with more than 20% of the season already completed. As we have entered an age of superteams in basketball the Sixers have basically taken the motto of “No Superstars? No Problem.” I really think the immediate success this team is having is due to the fact that they are buying into Coach Collins’ philosophy of playing fundamentally sound basketball. While I don’t expect to reporting about a parade down Broad Street in the immediate future. It definitely would be nice to see the Sixers shake up the basketball universe for at least a short while.
