Reports: Sixers trade Thaddeus Young to Timberwolves, acquire Shved, Mbah a Moute & first-rounder

Thad Young After a month of back and forth reports about the exact details of the blockbuster trade that will send Kevin Love to Cleveland, and 2014 first overall selection Andrew Wiggins to Minnesota in return, things are now beginning to shape up.

It was reported on August 8th that the Sixers would be sending veteran forward Thaddeus Young to the Minnesota Timberwolves for 2013 first overall pick Anthony Bennett. However, after two weeks of uncertainty reports surfaced yesterday that the Sixers would not be acquiring Bennett after all.

Today, more news came out regarding a trade including the Sixers and Young.

According to Jerry Zgoda, Minnesota Timberwolves reporter for the Star Tribune, the Sixers will be acquiring guard Alexey Shved and veteran forward Luc Mbah a Moute, and a top-10 protected first-rounder from the Heat via the Cavaliers. Both Shved and Mbah a Moute are expiring contracts. For now it seems like this trade will be a part of the blockbuster trade referred to above, which means that this trade cannot be completed until Sunday at the earliest, as the deal cannot happen until Wiggins has been signed for 30 days.

Schved, a 6-foot-6 combo guard, averaged 4 points, 1.3 rebounds and 10.5 minutes in 63 games with Minnesota last year. He’s under contract for $3.2 million.

Report: Bennett not coming to Sixers?

Anthony Bennett may not be coming to Philadelphia after all

Anthony Bennett may not be coming to Philadelphia after all

On August 8th there was a reported blockbuster trade announced that sends Kevin Love to join LeBron James in Cleveland and 2014 first overall pick Andrew Wiggins to Minnesota in return. The intriguing part for Sixers fans was that they would be involved, sending Thaddeus Young to Minnesota and receiving 2013 first overall selection Anthony Bennett in return. That all seemed set in stone.

Until today.

Jerry Zgoda, Minnesota Timberwolves reporter for the Star Tribune, tweeted out the following earlier today: Just a reminder: if you keep reading Bennett is headed to Philly for Young in forthcoming trade…don’t believe it.”

Other reports followed, stating that the Timberwolves may want to hang onto Bennett due to his controllable salary over the next two years, while Young can opt-out of his current contract next summer. If the Sixers do not land Bennett, they can still work out a separate trade to land expiring contracts while also acquiring a draft pick in return.

Sixers acquire Bennett, send Thaddeus Young to Minnesota

August 8th, 2014 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Sixers acquire Bennett, send Thaddeus Young to Minnesota | Filed in Basketball, General, Sixers

Thaddeus Young is headed to Minnesota for Anthony Bennett

Yesterday it was reported that the blockbuster trade that sends Kevin Love to Cleveland, was a two-team deal between the Timberwolves and Cavaliers. It was reported on TSP yesterday that the Sixers could still very well be involved. Turns out they were after all.

Mark Perner of the Philadelphia Daily News reports that the Sixers are trading Thaddeus Young to the Timberwolves for 2013 1st overall pick Anthony Bennett. There will be more coming back to the Sixers, however, those details are not known yet. The date to remember here is August 23rd, as that is the date this trade can not become official until. The reason for that is Andrew Wiggins, who is reportedly being sent to Cleveland can not be traded until the 23rd after signing his rookie contract.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported earlier this week that Minnesota saw Thaddeus Young as a good replacement for Love.

“For several weeks, it has been understood that the Timberwolves want (power forward) Thaddeus Young to be their new power forward when they trade Kevin Love to Cleveland.”

Kevin Love traded to Cleveland, but Sixers not involved according to report

Kevin Love has been traded, but Thaddeus Young is still a Sixer

Kevin Love has been traded, but Thaddeus Young is still a Sixer

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves have an agreement in principle on a trade that would send Kevin Love to the Cavaliers, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports. In return, Minnesota would receive the last two first overall picks in the NBA, Anthony Bennett (2013) and Andrew Wiggins (2014), along with a protected 2015 first round pick. The most interesting part for Sixers fans is they are not involved in this initial trade, as they were rumored to be for the last couple weeks.

The key phrase there is “initial trade”.

While the reported trade above is all but completed, the Sixers can still make a separate trade with Minnesota after the Love trade is official. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has reported that the Sixers are the team who will be taking on Anthony Bennett in a trade. Windhorst reported that a three-team trade was likely, but the Sixers could still strike a separate deal for Bennett if a three-team trade doesn’t happen. As a guest on 97.5 the Fanatic this week, Windhorst gave more clarification:

“For several weeks, it has been understood that the Timberwolves want (power forward) Thaddeus Young to be their new power forward when they trade Kevin Love to Cleveland. If there is no speed bumps between now and August 23rd, that is going to happen. Philadelphia is probably going to end up sending Young to Minnesota. Exactly who the Sixers get back is unclear. I have speculated it could be Anthony Bennett.”

Report: Sixers Interested In First Pick

June 11th, 2014 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Report: Sixers Interested In First Pick | Filed in Basketball, General, Sixers

Thad Young

According to an ESPN Mock Draft that was released recently, the Philadelphia 76ers are interested in trading up to acquire the Cleveland Cavaliers first overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft on June 26th.

The Sixers already own the 3rd and 10th selections, along with five second round picks, in this years draft.

The report says that the Sixers are not interested in giving up both of their top 10 picks to acquire the top selection, but a package including #3 and Forward Thaddeus Young is a possibility.

Earlier this month, Fox Sports Ohio reported that there was a team in the top three who had expressed interest in acquiring the top selection. It now turns out that the mystery team appears to be the Sixers.

Will The Sixers Make Moves?

February 16th, 2014 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Will The Sixers Make Moves? | Filed in Basketball, General, Sixers

The NBA trade deadline is just five days away on February 20th, and this year is shaping up to be an active deadline. The Sixers are expected to play a part in that but as of now everything has been very quite. So the question “Will the Sixers make any moves?” is starting to be asked a bit more anxiously, and today I will give my opinion on that very question.

The Sixers are currently 15-39 at the All-Star break, which is the second worst record in the NBA. For those of you that are looking ahead to the draft, that record has the Sixers comfortably in the bottom three, as Sacramento and the Lakers are both 3.5 games behind the Sixers.

With the draft certainly on the Sixers minds, it is time for them to look at their roster and decide on what pieces they will like to have on the roster for next season and possibly years to come. The three main names to watch are obvious, Evan Turner, Thaddeus Young, and Spencer Hawes. So what are the chances of any of these three being traded? Well lets take a look.

Sixers at the Halfway Point: Better Than Expected, But Still a Long Way to Go

January 23rd, 2014 by Jim Chesko | Comments Off on Sixers at the Halfway Point: Better Than Expected, But Still a Long Way to Go | Filed in Basketball, General, Sixers

sixers

The 76ers open the second half of their 2013-14 season Wednesday night, and it will be very interesting to see what happens over the next three months, both on and off the court.

They’ve dropped seven of their last eight games, and several recent losses have been a bit ugly, but otherwise, the Sixers have exceeded almost everyone’s expectations over the first half of the season. The won-lost record at the midpoint stands at 13-28. While that’s not great, a lot of the team’s fans and several of us in the media wondered if they’d win that many games over the entire first season of the Brett Brown era.

For fans hoping to see the Sixers get two lottery picks in the June draft, the season is working out just the way they’d want. At this writing, the 76ers own the NBA’s third-worst record (behind only Milwaukee and Orlando), while the New Orleans Pelicans are seventh-worst. As you may recall, the 2013 draft-day deal that sent Jrue Holiday to the Big Easy landed Philadelphia another first-round pick, as long as the Pelicans don’t make the playoffs and the pick isn’t among the top five. So, if the Sixers and Pelicans continue on their current course – and the ping-pong balls cooperate – your hometown team would have two high picks in what’s supposed to be a pretty deep draft, even if Duke’s Jabari Parker decides to stay put for another year of seasoning.

Bright spots over the first half: Obviously, the major positive has been the speedy development of rookie point guard Michael Carter-Williams. MCW is averaging 17.5 points and 6.7 assists through the first half of the campaign, and already has the poise of a veteran. He’s 22 years old, and should only get better over the next decade. Carter-Williams’ backup, Tony Wroten, has also been a pleasant surprise, averaging 13.0 points and 3.3 assists off the bench. Wroten, who suffered a right-ankle sprain last weekend in a loss to the Bulls, is still a kid at age 20.

The Sixers have also been getting career years out of both Evan Turner and Spencer Hawes, who are averaging 18.3 and 14.1 points, respectively. The 7-foot Hawes has even become a solid three-point shooter, at 41.3%. Still, it remains a good bet that Turner or Hawes (or both) will be sent packing before the NBA’s Feb. 20 trade deadline.
