Musgrave leaves Eagles for Raiders

January 20th, 2015 by Sam Shipley | Comments Off on Musgrave leaves Eagles for Raiders | Filed in Eagles, Football, NFL

In what has been a routine for Chip Kelly since he joined the Eagles two years ago, the team will need to find another quarterbacks coach this offseason after Bill Musgrave left the Eagles on Monday to become the offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders.

Musgrave, 47, is leaving after just one year as the Eagles quarterbacks coach after replacing Bill Lazor who left last offseason to become the Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator. He will now work under new Raiders coach Jack Del Rio, which is a similar job for Musgrave as he served as Del Rio’s offensive coordinator when Del Rio coached the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The departure of Musgrave adds even more confusion and uncertainty for the Eagles quarterback situation, as there is no sign or guarantee of who will be the teams starting quarterback at the start of next season. If the Eagles decide to stick with Nick Foles, the next quarterback coach will be Foles’ fourth different quarterback coach in his four years in the NFL. Foles first worked with Doug Pederson as a rookie when Andy Reid was still here, then worked under Lazor in 2013, and Musgrave this past season.

There is no sign on whether Kelly will promote from within his current staff or go out and hire a new coach.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Oakland Raiders- Game Preview, Breakdowns, Injury List and Predictions

November 4th, 2013 by Kyle Lutz | Comments Off on Philadelphia Eagles vs. Oakland Raiders- Game Preview, Breakdowns, Injury List and Predictions | Filed in Eagles, Football, General

eaglesraiders

Once again folks, it’s Sunday and time for Eagles’ football to commence. This week, they face off against their 1980 Super Bowl opponent, the 3-4 Oakland Raiders, from the AFC West. Oakland the remainder of the year still has to play their combined 15-1 rivals, Kansas City (8-0) and Denver (7-1) a game apiece, on top of a few other diminishing yet hungry NFC East teams, among others.

Oakland’s coming off of a close, yet impressive victory over Pittsburgh, 21-18, last week at home, in which QB Terrelle Pryor ran for a 93-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the game. Despite his incredible performance on the ground, by air he wasn’t as impressive. Pryor went 10/19 for a measly 88 passing yards and two interceptions; one of which eventually lead to a Shaun Suisham field goal for Pittsburgh. Limiting the turnovers is key for any team, but especially for Oakland, who needs the points per drive as much as possible, considering they play Denver, KC and San Diego six times a season. This proves true for Pryor as well, who needs to limit the turnovers as much as possible, as a rookie, in order to play effectively (especially in the passing game, in order to compliment his running game), and to play, period.

Wide receiver Jacoby Ford had a poor game vs. Pittsburgh, with two fumbles, one of which was recovered by Pittsburgh, and lead to a subsequent touchdown on the latter’s next drive, and -3 yards receiving on one catch.

This season thus far, in his second NFL season and first full, Pryor has a quarterback rating of 77.2, and he’s thrown more interceptions than touchdown passes (7 to 5). He’s still developing his game, and despite the curve, he’s learning tremendously, in strides, not only the fundamentals as a quarterback but the little things it takes to win. Despite the turnovers, Pryor has dramatically improved his passing game accuracy wise, which works wonders for the Raiders’ West Coast Offense offensive scheme, which requires a quarterback to be as accurate as can be in order to attain success, and finding the open receiver quickly. This season, he has a 63.1 completion percentage.

Pryor is learning quickly about the ins and outs of the West Coast offense regime, under offensive  coordinator Greg Olson, who ran the same system previously under former 49ers’ head coach Steve Mariucci in 2005 with Detroit. Pryor certainly has the physical talents to be able to survive in this league, like a younger Mike Vick, but time will tell as to whether or not he can keep his foot on the gas and improve rapidly enough to be successful.

Dallas Cowboys Vs. Oakland Raiders 4:15 pm on CBS

After taking the Titans on Monday Night Football (+4) and winning outright over the Texans, my record now stands at 8-1. I am giving out one selection for free on Thanksgiving and there will be 4 picks posted by Saturday for the games on Sunday. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your winnings.

In this game we have the Cowboys coming off an overall terrible performance by their offense against a struggling Washington Redskins team, where they needed a last minute touchdown to pull out a one point victory. On the other side, we have the Oakland Raiders coming off their biggest win of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Raiders came into that game as 10 point underdogs and were not given much of a chance to win the game with Jamarcus Russell being benched in favor of Bruce Gradkowski.

Johnny G’s Sunday NFL Picks (Recap)

November 22nd, 2009 by Christian | 4 Comments | Filed in Football, General

4-1 in his last five picks, here are Johnny G’s Sunday picks (originally posted Wednesday):

Oakland Raiders (+10) over Cincinnati Bengals/ Sunday 4:15 pm- After an extremely physical and emotional game against their divisional rivals, the Bengals will come into this game flat. Cedric Benson will most likely not play in this game, and if he does, will not be effective because of a hip flexor strain. Recently signed Larry Johnson will not be able to get the job done against an above average Oakland Raiders defense. The Raiders come into this game after an embarrassing loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, where starter Jamarcus Russell was benched for journeyman Bruce Gradkowski. Look for the Raiders to come ready to play and keep this game close. They may not win this game outright but it will be much closer than the public and odds makers expect. Take the points as the Raiders keep this game within the number.

Bengals 17 Raiders 14

Indianapolis Colts (-1) over Baltimore Ravens/ Sunday 1pm- After struggling in a primetime division game against a horrendous Browns team, I expect this Ravens team to get blown out of the building. Peyton Manning comes off of a stellar performance against Tom Brady and the Patriots, and the Colts offense is clicking on all cylinders. On the other hand, Joe Flacco and the Ravens come back after a short week and one of the ugliest prime time football games you will ever see as Baltimore struggled to score any points whatsoever against the Cleveland Browns. If Brady Quinn could accurately throw a five yard curl route or if his coaching staff had a sliver of confidence in him to throw the ball more than twelve yards down the field, the Ravens may have lost this game. Take the better team with the better QB on the road in a pick-em situation here.

Colts 31-Ravens 14

Philadelphia Eagles (-3) over Chicago Bears/ Sunday 8:20 pm- After a tough loss to the San Diego Chargers in San Diego, where the Eagles threw the ball a shocking 82% of the time, look for the offense to balance out this week and get back to basics. This Chicago Bears team is very average on both sides of the football at this point after losing their defensive leader Brian Urlacher for the season. They have no real number one receiver and Matt Forte has been invisible all season. Without a running game, look for Sean McDermott to confuse Cutler with blitz after blitz and watch the turnovers pile up. Although Brian Westbrook is out, the offense moved the ball effectively against a better Chargers defense and really should not have much of an issue at all. The Birds should not have trouble covering this field goal on the road.

Eagles Vs Cowboys Week 9 Preview

November 7th, 2009 by philliesfan0705 | 11 Comments | Filed in Eagles, Football, General

Time: 8:20 PM

Location: Lincoln Financial Field

Wow. What an opportunity for the Philadelphia Eagles. Just over a week ago, the Eagles were second nature to the city of Philadelphia. The town was painted red and the Phillies were easily the talk of the town. They were the crowned jewel. Chase Utley and Cliff Lee were our heroes, and they still are. However, the Eagles are now presented with the opportunity to paint the town green. It’s officially eagles season in Philadelphia. It’s that time once again to listen to all the naysayers ramble on about how McNabb and this eagles team will never win a Super bowl. It’s also time for McNabb and the Eagles to prove them wrong. The bull’s eye is back on Donovan McNabb. McNabb and the Eagles now have center stage. And what a better way to start than at the Linc on national television against their hated rival, the Dallas Cowboys.

A little over two weeks ago, when the eagles suffered an embarrassing loss to the lowly Oakland raiders, the Eagles and Cowboys seemed like two teams fighting for the Wild Card. The Giants were flying high at 5-0 and both the Eagles and Cowboys were in a bit of a rut. However, since that demoralizing loss to the raiders, the perspective on the NFC East has completely changed. It is now the New York Football Giants facing all the question marks as they sit at 5-3. The Eagles and Cowboys are sitting pretty at 5-2 and now play each other in this years’ biggest NFC East game to date.
Now, we all remember what happened last year in the biggest NFC East showdown. The God’s seemed to have a favor to return to the Eagles that day. It would be an understatement to say that the Eagles were lucky on that day. They were beyond lucky. The Buccaneers had a chance to eliminate the Eagles even before the start of their heavyweight match up with the Cowboys. However, those pesky Oakland Raiders ended their season. The Eagles also needed help from the Houston Texans and help is exactly what they got. The Texans went on to beat the Bears and end their chances at a playoff run. Everything aligned perfectly this day. By the time the Eagles game started, both teams knew they were locked in a win or go home game. It had the makings of a back and forth battle that could have gone down as one of the better regular season games of all time. However, the Eagles didn’t want to put anything at risk. They pummeled the Cowboys in every facet of the game, from the opening kickoff to the final whistle.

Now, I understand that this year’s match up between these two teams is not as pivotal as last year’s do or die game. However, it is a game of opportunity. Whoever wins this game gives themselves a significantly greater opportunity to win the division than the losing team. And for a long as I’ve been watching this Eagles team, they seem to take advantage of the opportunity’s presented to them. The Eagles WILL be prepared for this game. I’m not so sure if the Cowboys will. They certainly may be, but a team that can’t come out prepared for a win or go home game in December will find a hard time being prepared for a week 9 match up against that same team. You can go into the statistics of the two teams and decipher the winner from that, but that really doesn’t do anything. We all know the talent level of these two teams. The Eagles are loaded with offensive talent this year and the Cowboys, not so much. Both defenses are solid, but the Eagles should have the advantage with the revved up Philly faithful. Watch out for Desean Jackson. He is gifted with lightning fast speed, and he also seems to thrive under the bright lights. Look for him to test the Cowboys secondary and possibly open things up for a huge game from Brent Celek. Another deciding factor in this game will obviously be Romo vs. McNabb. Romo is a talented quarterback. I won’t take that away from him. However, he is no McNabb. McNabb may tend to choke in NFC Championship games, but Romo has never been to one. McNabb has been to five. McNabb knows more about the big stage than Romo, despite the harsh criticism he takes for his January and February flops. However, this game is being played on November 8th. It has all the makings of a brilliant Donovan McNabb performance. In a game like this, I’ll put my money on D-Mac.

Prediction: Eagles 31-20
