K.J. McDaniels signed a one-year, non-guaranteed  contract this morning that will make him a restricted free agent in 2015. The very risky move was first reported by Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski Wednesday morning.

The 32nd overall pick of the 2014 draft will not be paid like a 32nd overall pick after this season. McDaniels has bet on himself in a huge way, as if he plays well he will be rewarded with a better pay scale than the Sixers structure of a four-year deal with years three and four of the contract being non-guaranteed. However, if McDaniels fails to play well, or even gets injured this move could very well backfire on the rookie. McDaniels was present for the Sixers media day on Monday, but was not at the opening of training camp yesterday, as his contract wasn’t finalized yet.

Regardless, both McDaniels and his agent feel this is the best move going forward, and at the end of the year the Sixers still have the rights to keep him in Philadelphia.
