Forward Ryan White Celebrates the Flyers win with goalie Steve Mason

The Flyers returned home to Philadelphia as they hosted the Montreal Canadians to begin the second half of the season. They went into the all-star break with a win and were five points out of the wildcard and needed another regulation win to inch closer to the final wild card spot and distance themselves from the Canadians. They did just that, thanks to a full sixty minutes of good/disciplined hockey. The special teams played a vital role in last nights victory, as they went 2-4 on the powerplay, goals from Simmonds and Schenn, and killed 3 of 4 Habs penalties, including a 5 minute major given to Radko Gudas for his hit on Lucas Lessio.

The Flyers 2-0 lead would be cut in half thanks to a powerplay goal scored by Habs Andrei Markov, with just 1:42 left in the first. After scoring late in the first, the Canadians would score the tying goal just 2:30 into the 2nd period, courtesy of defensemen Jeff Petry, Halfway into the second, Wayne Simmonds netted his second goal of the night, giving the Flyers a critical 3-2 lead. After killing the five minute major, Matt Read put the dagger in the Habs, as he scored the empty netter to put the Flyers up 4-2 with just 43 seconds left in regulation.

Wayne Simmonds 3rd period go-ahead-goal.

Jake Voracek and the Flyers honor a Flyers’ fan with cancer

February 22nd, 2015 by Kyle Lutz | Comments Off on Jake Voracek and the Flyers honor a Flyers’ fan with cancer | Filed in Flyers, Hockey

This past weekend, Flyers’ right-winger Jake Voracek (as well as the whole Flyers’ organization) did an amazing, heartfelt thing for an 11-year-old boy from the Make-A-Wish foundation. 11-year-old Tony Campisi, who’s battling brain cancer and is from Mechancsburg, PA, only asked to travel to Philadelphia and attend yesterday’s Flyers-Predators game, which he did in a first-row seat, but he was given so much more. Voracek allowed the youngster to personally travel to the game with him, and invited him to go to Chickie’s and Pete’s with him the night before, too.

In addition to that, on Saturday morning, Campisi was given his own personalized locker in the team’s locker room, which was positioned next to Voracek’s. After the team dressed, the team let him practice with them, too. When he scored on backup Rob Zepp (who got the start in net), the team cheered for him in celebration and tapped their sticks, to make him feel as if he were a part of the team. After taking in the game, he was allowed to return to the locker room afterwards, to hang out with Voracek again. He even got his photo taken, too, with Voracek, fellow winger Wayne Simmonds, and defenseman Mark Streit.

Philadelphia Flyers (39-27-8) vs. St. Louis Blues (50-17-7) Game-Day Preview

April 2nd, 2014 by Kyle Lutz | Comments Off on Philadelphia Flyers (39-27-8) vs. St. Louis Blues (50-17-7) Game-Day Preview | Filed in Flyers, General, Hockey

Flyers-vs-Blues-0401

After acquiring Sabres’ stud netminder Ryan Miller, via trade, a little over a month ago on February 28th, St. Louis has gone an impressive 11-4-1. They face-off tonight against the Flyers, who lost in a close one to Boston, by way of the shoot-out, in the matinee two afternoons ago. St. Louis last played on Saturday night, when they lost to division-rival Dallas 4-2. Both teams I’m sure are eager to jump back on the winning track, after suffering their respective setbacks over the weekend.

The Flyers will start backup Ray Emery, surprisingly. This is Emery’s third start in the past eight games now. For St. Louis, they turn to regular Ryan Miller again, as usual.

These two teams played just 10 days ago in Philly, where the Flyers came out with an impressive 4-1 victory over Miller. In that game, four Flyers had multi-point games, including superstar Claude Giroux (2 assists) and winger Jake Voracek (1 g, 1 a). Mason started that game, and saved 32 out of 33 total shots, while Miller allowed three on 18 total shots. Putting pressure, and getting rebounds, on Miller is imperative in tonight’s game, if the Flyers want at least a point, and to keep pace with the rival Rangers for second in the Metropolitan.

Enforcer Steve Ott, who also came over from Buffalo in the Miller deal, has tallied 11 penalty minutes and two assists in 15 games with St. Louis since the trade.

Veteran winger/center Vinny Lecavalier is adjusting nicely since being forced to move to the 4th line from the second. Since the move, he has three goals in two games, including two vs. Boston, one of which came via a blistering slap shot on the man advantage. If Lecavalier can continue his hot streak centering the fourth, it can only help the team.

Philadelphia Flyers (10-10-2) vs. Florida Panthers (6-13-5)- Pre-Game Article- including breakdowns, statistics, injury reports and predictions

November 26th, 2013 by Kyle Lutz | Comments Off on Philadelphia Flyers (10-10-2) vs. Florida Panthers (6-13-5)- Pre-Game Article- including breakdowns, statistics, injury reports and predictions | Filed in Flyers, General, Hockey

Philadelphia Flyers (10-10-2; 4-3-2 away) vs. Florida Panthers (6-13-5; 3-4-3 home)

Location- Sunrise, FL
Arena- BB&T Center
Time: 07:30 PM EST
TV Channel(s)- FSFLP, CSN Philly
Radio- 97.5 the Fanatic
Starting Goalies- Steve Mason (PHI)- Tim Thomas (FLA)

The Flyers are back on the road again, folks. This time it’s brief, at least for now, and only for two games- both of which are in Florida. After tonight, they face off against Tampa, at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, two days from now on the eve of Thanksgiving. They’ll play a rare 11:30 AM game this Black Friday at home vs. Winnipeg, on a back-to-back game schedule, before traveling to play at Nashville on Saturday. The Fly Guys have been playing excellent, extremely competitive hockey as of late under new head coach, interim Craig Berube. They’ve won three straight and are undefeated in seven straight games, since November 9th. So far this year, Philadelphia has been a somewhat better road team, than home team, going 4-3-2 away from the Wells Fargo Center.

As for Florida, they’ve lost two straight (one was a shootout loss), and went 2-2-1 on their five-game road trip that they just wrapped up prior to tonight’s game. They’re 6-13-5 this year, and are currently in second to last place in the Atlantic Division standings, ahead of Buffalo.

Offensively this season, Florida ranks 25th in the league in goals (51), 21st in shots on goal (673), 27th in assists (83) and 27th in goals-per-game (2.13). They’re dead last in the NHL on the man-advantage, with a percentage of 9.3. They’re also very poor on the penalty kill as well: ranked 27th overall with a percentage of 77.1. This is why their record stands as it is. They’re poor in special-teams’ scenarios, they’re poor five-on-five and in the face off circle as well (ranked 24th; with a 48.1% face-off win percentage).

Flyers win; defeat Ottawa 5-0

November 13th, 2013 by Kyle Lutz | Comments Off on Flyers win; defeat Ottawa 5-0 | Filed in Flyers, General, Hockey

(AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Adrian Wyld)

The Flyers put together a solid, 60-minute effort vs. Ottawa tonight, in a 5-0 blowout victory. Steve Mason earned his first shutout, on 24 shots, as a member of the Flyers, even though he’s been solid all year long now. Jake Voracek had a pair of goals, Claude Giroux had a pair of assists, and Vinny Lecavalier and Brayden Schenn also had multiple point games as well. They out-shot the Senators by 7, 31-24, and 21-to 14 from the second period onward.

Philadelphia not only scored in general, but especially on the man advantage. They converted twice on three opportunities, while the opposition failed to score at all on their lone man advantage. Plain and simple, the Flyers dominated tonight, and from early on- not only offensively but defensively and goaltending as well. The team tomorrow continues their 3-game road trip, the 2nd game of the trip, at Pittsburgh vs. the rival Penguins. You can make a case for both starting or sitting goalie Steve Mason tomorrow.

01. If he starts, it would be the first time this season that he’s started in back to back games, thus he hasn’t really been taxed thus far this year physically from that standpoint. Also, supporting this point would be the fact that he shut out a strong Ottawa team and offense tonight, so playing the hot hand makes total sense. As they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I would ride Steve Mason and his hot hand tomorrow night vs. Pittsburgh, but that’s just me.

02. Another point would be to give Mason a rest, but this point is moot, in my opinion, compared to the former. Some would argue that, after tonight, on a back-to-back night, the latter game should be played by the backup/remaining goalie, in order to give the previous night’s goalie (in this case, that would be Mason) a rest for future advantages. I think, as an aforementioned point, that Mason and his body would be able to handle a back-to-back game, especially after a shutout.
