The Eagles should pursue veteran, star free-agent free safety Ed Reed

After the 2-7 Houston Texas released veteran safety Ed Reed today, in his first season with the team, it’s up in the air as to who will pursue and sign him, but I believe the Eagles should make a solid, best effort to do so going forward. Here is why, if I were the Eagles (general management), I would pursue and sign Reed.

01. To improve the team defensively at the free safety position

The Eagles on defense this season, gradually, have made vast improvements compared to how they were originally performing and where they were rankings wise. Billy Davis, the team’s newest defensive coordinator, has pushed the right buttons recently to adjust the team defensively, as best as possible, to the 3-4 defensive scheme.

Reed is a veteran, a winner, and a stud defensively, to say the least. He’s a 9-time Pro Bowler (out of 11 full NFL seasons), an 8-time All-Pro, the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2004, and a Super Bowl champion (2013). He also currently holds the all-time NFL career record for most interception return yards. Reed also has the record for the longest interception return (108 yards), and for career postseason interceptions, with 9.

Ed also made the 2000 NFL All-Decade team as well.

Why the Blue Jays and Marlins Trade is bad for Baseball!

November 15th, 2012 by Chris Pierce | Comments Off on Why the Blue Jays and Marlins Trade is bad for Baseball! | Filed in Baseball, General, Sports

Is this good for Baseball??

Yesterday the Florida Marlins agreed to trade Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, John Buck and Emiio Bonifacio to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Yunel Escobar, Henderson Alvarez, Jeff Mathis, Jake Marisnick, Adeniy Hechavarria, Justin Nicolino and Anothny DeSClafani.
This is bad for the Phillies and bad for baseball.  In the days when you have billionaire owners coming into professional sports more and more of them are going to want to spend money to win championships.

The Phillies owners are a partnership which means that they only put in a certain amount of money each year and all have to agree to spend that money.  So the likely hood that the Phillies would ever make such a blockbuster deal is very unlikely. Any team that ends up with Mark Cuban as their owner will try to make trades like this and will tip the imbalance in baseball even more.  More and more sports are becoming a business and it is hurting the purity of the game.  Teams like the Astros, Indians, Twins Reds and even the Phillies with their current ownership structure would never have a chance to win a world series again.

Baseball owners in general should be outraged that this happened as well.  Jeffrey Loria just built a brand new stadium in Miami a city that struggles to draw fans to their games even with names like Reyes, Johnson and Buehrle, so there is no way they are going to fill more than 8,000 seats a game with a AAA team at best on the field.  The next team that is going to try to build a stadium is going to have that much harder of a time getting money from their state and city because of Loria and his stupidity. Johnny G’s Monday Night Football Pick

November 23rd, 2009 by Johnny G | 9 Comments | Filed in Football, General

Houston Texans Vs. Tennessee Titans 8:30pm on ESPN

After going 7-1 with my first 8 picks, starting with a (4-0) sweep in week 10 and following that up with a (3-1) showing in Week 11- Here is my analysis and pick for Monday night.

The Houston Texans enter this game fresh off their bye week and are in hot pursuit of the best record in franchise history, which is not as prestigious when your franchise has never had a .500 record. The Texans currently sit at 5-4 and although there are many question marks on both sides of the ball, they have an extremely dangerous and explosive offense even with the absence of emerging TE Owen Daniels. Matt Schaub is in the midst of a career season and is clicking on all cylinders with All-pro WR Andre Johnson, while also spreading the ball around to his solid group of secondary receivers in Kevin Walter, and Jacoby Jones. On the other side of the ball, the defense is improving but still would not intimidate anyone in the NFL and they will have a daunting task ahead of them, by having to contain the NFL’s leading rusher, Chris Johnson.

On the other hand, you have the Titans who started the season 0-6 with Kerry Collins at the helm. Since that horrendous start, Collins has been replaced by former first round pick Vince Young and the offensive scheme is now run almost exclusively through Chris Johnson. At this point in the season, you are looking at the best 3-6 football team in the league and by all accounts are the same team that went 13-3 in 2008. With Vince Young now managing this offense and not trying to win games all by himself, Tennessee is suddenly very dangerous to play every week. Now that the defense is also playing similar to last season, this is a team that could conceivably run the table and finish at 10-6 if things fell their way.

This game will come down to if the Texans can deal with the wear and tear throughout the game of the Titans offensive line pounding away at them. The Titans will not abandon the run if it does not work early, they will continue to pound away at the Texans and mix in plenty of play-action fakes. At the end of the day the overall wear and tear on this defense will be too much for the Texans to handle. Look for Vince Young to play well but he will not win this game on his own by any means and the game will be shortened by the Titans running game, preventing Schaub from spending too much time on the field. The mess in the Texans backfield will not help matters, as Steve Slaton recently regained his starting job after losing it to journeyman and former Eagle, Ryan Moats because of a fumbling problem. This game will be at least be worth watching, unlike the pitiful game that the NFL put on primetime last week between the Browns and the Ravens. Take the Titans on the road in this contest plus the points.
