Because It’s the Cup!

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” Some call it Christmas, others call it the NHL playoffs. If you are a die-hard of a hockey fan, as I am then you understand just how awesome and intense playoff hockey is.

There really isn’t anything better, and this year it has lived up to all its hype.

Interesting stat, there was a seven team turnover from last year’s NHL Playoff’s (seven teams from last year did not qualify this year), the highest turnover rate in the history of the NHL. That speaks volumes of how much the game has changed, from a business/salary cap perspective, and also from the balance of talent surrounding the league.

As a Flyers fan it is obviously tough not watching them compete for the cup, however I have caught quite a few games and they are some of the most evenly matched and entertaining series’ I can remember. Old-time hockey seems to be making more of an appearance as the refs are letting the boys play and blowing the whistles less. Tons of hits, fights, highly electric offensive displays, stellar goaltending performances, and a series that shockingly ended in a sweep.

The highly talented Anaheim Ducks spoiled the Jets first playoff appearance since relocating to Winnipeg back in 2011. The original franchise was last seen in the playoffs 19 years ago. That was a tough one for die-hard Jets fans to swallow.

Craig Berube: Deserving of being a Jack Adams Award Finalist

Since the Philadelphia Flyers fired Peter Laviolette just three games into this season, on October 5th of last year to be exact, the team has made a 360 turn-around (to say the least), and also a solid effort perhaps as well in hopes of keeping their now-interim head coach Craig Berube’s job full-time, except without an interim tag attached of course.

Berube, a former player (two spans with Philadelphia: 1986-91, 1998-2000), wouldn’t give you the slightest impression that he was an enforcer back in his playing days based on his persona and coaching strategies. Behind the bench he’s calm and collected, yet responsible, employing a defensive-based scheme as coach. He demands the most out of his players on the ice, including defensive responsibility, and while he’s stern, he isn’t the screaming and yelling type coach that his predecessor in Peter Laviolette was.

For only so long, usually, do the yelling and screaming type coaches like Laviolette last on a team; due to players eventually blocking the coach out, players feeling a sense of disrespect, and their coaching schemes no longer working on the ice. I foresee that not occurring with Berube due to his calm, yet stern nature; the players respect and listen to him, and I feel that’ll continue down the road regardless of personnel changes and slight modifications in coaching philosophies.

Three days ago the NHL announced its three 2013-14 finalists for the Jack Adams Award Trophy; awarded annually to an NHL coach “adjudged to have contributed the most to his team’s success.” The three finalists are as followed: Colorado’s Patrick Roy, Detroit’s Mike Babcock, and Tampa Bay’s Jon Cooper.

Patrick Roy
